JUAN A. ROMERO
LIBERAL -- Juan A. "John" Romero, 78, died Friday, April 7, 2000, at the Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.
He was born June 24, 1921, to Marcelino and Frances (Barella) Romero in Miera, New Mexico.
He married Tillie B. Gonzales Jan. 25, 1941, in Clayton, N.M. She died March 4, 1991.
He served in the United States Marines during World War II.
He had been a Liberal resident since 1946. He was employed with the Stu Emmert Automotive Center until his retirement.
He was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church and the V.F.W. Lane Day Post No. 3166, both in Liberal.
Survivors include two sons, Andres "PeeWee" Romero, San Diego, Calif., and Norman Romero, Baytown, Texas; one daughter, Sharon Pineda, Liberal; one sister, Annie Herrera, Hugoton; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by two sons, John E. and Robert; an infant daughter, Julia; three brothers, Jimmie, Mike and Ben; and one grandson.
Welcoming home will be at 4 p.m. and vigil service will be at 7 p.m. today at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Liberal.
Mass of the resurrection will be at 3 p.m. Monday at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Father Henry Hildebrandt presiding. Burial will follow at the Restlawn Cemetery
in Liberal.
Memorials are suggested to be made for masses in his memory.

LAWRENCE B. HECKMAN
Lawrence B. Heckman, 84, Liberal, died Monday, April 10, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
He was born Sept. 15, 1915, to John Louis and Katharine (Miller) Heckman in Galatia.
He came to Liberal in 1930. He graduated from Liberal High School and attended Panhandle State College, Goodwell, Okla., and the Wichita School of Business.
He was employed as an accountant and later became the manager of the John Deere Implement Co., Liberal, and had farmed part time.
He began farming full time and received an Excellence-in-Farming Award from the U.S. Soil Conservation in 1976.
After retiring from farming, he was Seward County assessor and later a part-time accountant until his death. He had also served on the Seward County Extension Board.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher and was on the finance committee. He served on the 300 Club board committee for many years.
He was known for his wit and humor.
He married Ruth Evelyn Skinner Dec. 15, 1940, in Liberal. She died Jan. 7, 1994.
Survivors include one son, Steve Heckman, Liberal; one daughter, Linda Ball and husband, Larry, Indianapolis, Ind.; one sister, Esther Swan, Liberal; three grandchildren, Tracy Ball, Matthew Heckman and Stephanie Heckman; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Edwin Heckman; and one half-brother, Robert Atland.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Phil Shull officiating.
Burial will be at the Liberal Cemetery.
Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8-11 a.m. Friday.

ANDREW NEWTON FUQUA
HUGOTON -- Andrew Newton Fuqua, 62, Hugoton, died Monday, April 10, 2000, at Baptist St. Anthony Hospital in Amarillo, Texas.
He was born Oct. 20, 1937, to Alfred Newton and Fannie Mae (Howell) Fuqua in Spur, Texas,
He moved to Hugoton from Spearman, Texas, and had lived in Hugoton for 25 years.
He was a member of Church of Christ in Hugoton.
He married Madalyn Lane Schumann Dec. 1, 1957. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Neal Ross Fuqua, Hugoton, and Dale Roy Fuqua, Bakersfield, Calif.; one sister, Alpha Mae Grice, Jayton, Texas; one aunt, Bodie Fry, Post, Texas; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Church of Christ in Hugoton, with the Rev. Lee Skelton presiding.
Burial will be at the Hugoton Cemetery.
ROBERT JOHNSON
ULYSSES -- Robert Leroy Johnson, 68, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.
He was born Oct. 12, 1931, to Elmer Leroy and Helen Aileen (Jones) Johnson in rural Grant County.
He was a lifetime resident of Ulysses, where he worked for Pioneer Electric for over 30 years before his retirement in 1992.
Survivors include three sons, Robert L. Johnson, Jr., Lansing, Rod Johnson, Ulysses, and Daniel W. Johnson, Garden City; three brothers, Vergil Johnson, Carl Johnson, and Steve Johnson, all of Ulysses; one sister, Margorie VonBank, Morrison, Colo; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Dennis W. Johnson; and one brother, Don Eugene Johnson.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday, at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses.
Burial will follow at Golden Cemetery, Ulysses.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today, and from 10 a.m. to noon, Friday at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials be given to Feed the Children Foundation in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.
ELSIE L. SNYDER
SUBLETTE -- Elsie L. Snyder, 92, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at Satanta District Hospital in Satanta.
She was born Aug. 6, 1907, to Floyd and Caroline (Nicholas) Bowden, in Cookeville, Tenn. The family moved to Nashville, Tenn. in 1912 , where she attended school until 1917, when the family moved to Kansas.
They lived in Stafford County. She graduated from Antrim High School in 1926.
She married Albert Snyder August, 1926. They moved from St. John to Haskell County in 1943 where they farmed. He died March 8, 1973, in a car accident.
She was a member of United Methodist Church, Sublette, and attended Pride of Life, Sublette.
Survivors include two sons-in-law, John Davis, Sublette, and Gene Ochs, Sublette; six grandchildren, Kenneth Davis and wife, Janet, Carolyn Withers and husband, Charlie, Virginia Webber and husband, Tim, Larry Davis and wife, Barb, Rhonda Brown and husband, Rex, Kent Ochs and wife, Renee; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-granddaughters; two brothers, Hollis Bowden, St. John, and Milton Bowden, St. John.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two daughters, Doris Jean Davis, Dec. 8, 1980, and Mary Lou Ochs, April 11, 1987, and one grandson, Michael Eugene Ochs, July 27, 1991, and one brother, Everett Bowden.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette, with the Rev. Mary Al Titus presiding.
Haskell County Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

BOBBY DEAN CORKINS
LIBERAL -- Bobby Dean Corkins, 64, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal
He was born Feb. 22, 1936, to Linford "Doc" and Anna L. (Corrigan) Corkins in Liberal.
He had lived in Medicine Lodge, before moving to Liberal four years ago, where he was a resident of Bethphage.
Survivors include one brother, Gary Hibbs, Arlington, Texas; two sisters, Pat Foster, El Cajon, Calif., and Linda Collins, Stanwood, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and inurnment will be at 2 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Phill Shull presiding.
Miller Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
SHARLENE LYNETTE
SUBLETTE -- Sharlene Lynette Miller, 55, died Friday, April 14, 2000, at Satanta District Hospital in Satanta.
She was born March 26, 1945, to Archie and Edna Viola (Friesen) Smith in Montezuma.
She married Jerry L. Miller April 16, 1991, in Garden City. He survives.
They moved from Garden City to Sublette in April 1998. She was a lifetime resident of southwest Kansas.
She was a home health care worker.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry Lynn Miller, Sublette; one son, Bryce Dirks and wife, Stacy, Montezuma; one daughter, Kandis Crawford and huband, Pat, Lindsborg; three step-sons, Gary Miller and wife, Essie, Enterprise, Ala., Kevin Miller and wife, Michele, Jacksonville, Fla., and Jerry Miller and wife, Elisa, Garden City; one step-daughter, Teresa Miller, Colorado Springs, Colo.; her parents, Archie and Edna Smith, Sublette; one brother, L. Gene Smith, Garden City; five grandchildren, and six step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Nazarene, Meade, with the Rev. Ervey Unruh presiding.
Burial will be at Morningside Cemetery
in Montezuma.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
