EDITH M. MATHESON

Edith M. Matheson, 81, died Friday, April 21, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal following a short illness.

She was born April 15, 1919, to Alonzo A. and Lydia T. (Irons) Woodrum in Hardesty, Okla.

She married Theodore "Ted" Matheson Sept. 23, 1935, in Liberal. He died Dec. 3, 1993.

She attended school in Hardesty and moved to Liberal in 1933. She was a waitress for 20 years at the Coffee Cup and later at the Blue Goose.

She was a member of the First Church of God in Liberal.

Survivors include one son, Jerry Matheson and wife, Betty, Hugoton; two brothers, Robert Woodrum, Perryton, Texas, and Paul Woodrum, Salem, Ore.; four sisters, Naomi Hillis, Liberal, Jewell Banks, Booker, Texas, Verda Cooper, Hardesty, and Rinda Bartlett, Dodge City; three grandchildren, Dean Matheson and wife, Cheryl, Diana Jernigan and husband, Monte, and Shari Norris and husband, Scott; six great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, two step-great-granddaughters, and one step-great-great-grandson.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one half-brother.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday at Miller Chapel in Liberal, with the Rev. David Parker presiding.

Burial will follow at the Liberal Cemetery in Liberal.

ESTHER V. HAYES

PLAINS -- Esther V. Hayes, 89, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at Meade District Hospital in Meade.

She was born November 19, 1910, to Samuel P. and Mary Specht Currier near Fowler.

She was a homemaker and a retired motel operator. She had lived in Fowler until 1938 when she moved to El Cajon, Calif., residing there until 1995 when she moved to Plains.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

She married J. Oliver Hayes in 1927 in Meade. He died Nov. 12, 1991.

Survivors include four sisters, Clarice McCarty, Meade, Jeanna Marx and Ruth Miller, both of Plains, and Eleanor Lehn of Mason City, Iowa; and several Nieces and Nephews.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday at Fowler Cemetery, Fowler, with the Rev. Harry Fink presiding.

Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary, Meade.

Memorials are suggested to The Young At Heart Senior Center of Plains.

PRESTON ALMOND

Preston Almond, 50, a former Liberal resident, died Friday, April 14, at the home of his children in Lewisville, Texas, following a sudden illness.

He was born Jan. 12, 1950 to Virgil and Ester (Jensen) Almond in Miller, S. D.

He grew up and attended school in Miller, graduating from Miller High School in 1968. He later attended college in Springfield. He moved to Liberal in 1980, working as a route salesman for Pepsi Cola and later worked for Carlile Water Well Service. He moved to the Tulsa area in 1995 and was a sales associate for Schawn's in Sapulpa.

He married Donna Diveley, May 20, 1981, in Beaver, Okla.

Survivors include two sons, Prentice Almond, Madison, S.D. and Jeramey Brown, Lewisville, Texas; two daughters, Trista Almond, Lewisville, Texas, and Marlecia Almond, Madison, S.D.; his mother, Ester Blachford, Miller, S.D.; one brother, Rick Almond, Catawissa, Mo; three sisters, Kathleen Stanhill, Sonara, Calif.,Verleen Brown, Tuolumne, Calif.; and Marsha Davis, Miller, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his father Virgil and his paternal and maternal grandparents.

Funeral services were held April 20, in Miller.

Burial was in the G.A.R. Cemetery, Miller. Reck Funeral Home, Miller, was in charge of services.

NAOMI RUTH BEATTY KEITH

COLDWATER ญญ Naomi Ruth (Beatty) Keith, 66, died Sunday, April 23, at her residence in Coldwater.

She was born on Aug. 9, 1933, in to John Henry and Grace Marie (Smith) Beatty in Greensburg.

She was a resident of Coldwater, moving there in 1990 from Yuma, Ariz. She graduated from Mullinville High School in 1952.

She married Robert Bruce Keith Aug. 1, 1952, in Clayton, N.M. He died on Jan. 10, 1990

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Santee, Calif. She was a Boy Scout Den Leader of Pack No. 144, a Girl Scout Troop Leader and a member of the P.T.A., all of Santee. She was also a member of several bowling leagues in El Cajon, Calif.

Survivors include six sons; Robert Bruce Keith, Rowland Dale Keith, Rodney Ray Keith and Jeremy Eugene Albee, all of Coldwater, Robin Eugene Keith, Liberal, and Ronald Dean Keith, St. George, Utah; three daughters; Jackie Lee Waters, Stearns, Ky; Teresa Marie Pinnick, Coldwater, and Roberta Ruth Farney, Granite City, Ill.; two brothers; Henry Curtis Beatty, Houston, Texas, and Gene W. Beatty, Coldwater; five sisters; Edyth Ellen Black, Coldwater; Grace Marie Copeland, Mullenville; Iris Dorreen Cole, Wichita; Elizabeth Ann Hollister, Mt. Vernon, Missouri, and Francis Geraldine Poyner, Greenforest, Ark.; twenty-seven grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents; one son, Joel Lawrence Albee III; three grandchildren; three brothers; Gerald Reno Beatty, James Ellis Beatty and Warren Durwood Beatty; and one sister, Nettie Evon Green.

A memorial service is will be at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, at the United Methodist Church in Coldwater, with the Rev. Kent Little presiding.

Memorials are suggested to Southwind Hospice or American Cancer Society in care of Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater, KS 67029.

BOBBY JOE HAIGHT

Bobby Joe Haight, 18, died Saturday, April 15, 2000 in Liberal.

He was born Jan. 9, 1982, to Donald and Anita (Hegdahl) Haight in Woodward, Okla.

He attended Woodward schools from 1990 to 1998. While in high school, he worked at Golden Corral. He moved to Liberal at the age of 17, to make a new start. He worked full-time at National Beef till his death.

He loved basketball and soccer, as well as drawing and swimming. He was well loved by his friends.

Survivors include his mother, Anita Shuman and her husband Ray, Woodward; his father, Don Haight, Woodward; paternal grandparents, Harold and Bertie Haight, Woodward; maternal grandfather, Arnold Hegdahl, Liberal; one step-sister, Tamara Nix, Arnett; and many other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Charlotte Hegdahl; one step-brother, James Michael Simpson; and great-grandparents, Charles and Ida Tubb.

Graveside services were at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Elmwood Cemetery with the Reverend Clyde Irving presiding.

Burial followed at the Elmwood Cemetery with Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the family in care of Billings Funeral Home, 1621 Downs Ave., Woodward, OK 73801.

ESTHER E. BUCK

Esther Eleanor (Webb) Buck, 85, died Monday, April 24, 2000.

She was born Sept. 24, 1914, in Wayne County, Iowa.

She grew up near Seymour, Iowa, and graduated from Seymour High School.

She married H.C. "Simon" Buck Sept. 24, 1932. They were married 59 years. He preceded her in death.

In early adulthood, she worked as a manager for Prince Ice Cream Castle. She also worked for many years at Wright Hardware and Implement in Seymour.

She retired in 1969 and moved with her husband to the Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.

Her hobbies included entertaining family and friends at their lakehouse, growing flowers and feeding birds, especially hummingbirds.

She moved to Liberal in June 1997, to be closer to family. She was a resident of the Liberal Good Samaritan Center, Special Care Unit, until her death.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the USS New Jersey Veterans' Auxiliary.

Survivors include her brother, Kenneth Webb, Marshalltown, Iowa; sister-in-law, Wilma Wright, Adel, Iowa; a niece, Bobbie Hart and husband, Jack, Liberal; a nephew, John Wright and wife, Ev, Waukee, Iowa; great-niece, Pam McElvain and husband, Kenny, Liberal; great-nephews, David Hart and wife, Nancy, Liberal, and Brian Hart, Kansas City, Mo.; great-great nephew, Brad McElvain, Kansas City; great-great niece, Christi McElvain, Mesa, Ariz.; and cousin, Richard Barlett and wife, Dickie, Seymour.

She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Randolph Funeral Home in Seymour.

Burial will be at Southlawn Cemetery in Seymour.

Memorials are suggested to the Liberal Good Samaritan Center, Special Care Unit, 2160 Zinnia Lane, Liberal, KS 67901, or in care of Bobbie Hart, 603 E. Pancake Blvd., Liberal, KS 67901.

KEITH ALLAN MERZ

HALTOM CITY, Texas -- Keith Allan Merz, 39, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at Bishop Davies Care Center in Hurst, Texas, after a long battle with cancer.

He was born June 21, 1960, to Melvin and Jimmie (LaFon) Merz in Garden City.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. At the time of his death, he was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Keller, Texas.

He attended grade school in Deerfield and when the family moved to Liberal in 1970, he attended Liberal High School and Southwest Kansas Technical School. After completing school, he moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where he was employed by Martin K. Eby Construction Company as a welder.

He married Wanda Jones Dec. 25, 1999, in Fort Worth. She survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Tiffany and Stasha Merz, Austin, Texas, and Misty Dunn, Oklahoma City, Okla.; his parents, Melvin and Jimmie Merz, Liberal; one brother, Steve Merz, Hugoton; two sisters, Judy and husband, Steve Armstrong, Watauga, Texas; and Janet and husband, Alan Freeman, Liberal; two step-children, Darrold and Katie McAllister, Haltom City, Texas; one grandson, Nicholas; two nephews and one niece; and close friends Tommy and Sherry Pearson of Newark.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Bertha Merz, and Charles and Minnie LaFon.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shannon Funeral Home in Fort Worth with the Rev. Glenn Huebel presiding.

Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Deerfield Cemetery, Deerfield, with the Rev. Lynn Spencer presiding.

Friends may call at Miller Mortuary 5-8 p.m. Thursday.

DORIS A. ENGEL

Doris A. Engel, 77, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, in Colorado.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Liberal. Arrangements are under the direction of Kitch Funeral Home.
