JAMES ROMERO
James "Jim Boy" Romero, 46, Liberal, died Wednesday, May 3, at his home.
He was born Feb. 7, 1954, to Marcelino S. and Eva. F. (Mondragon) Romero in Clayton, N.M.
He came to Liberal with his family in 1949, and graduated from Liberal High School in 1972.
He was an upholsterer for Alvarez's for many years.
He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Liberal.
He married Anita Lara in October 1972. He married Pat Bailey in 1984. She died in 1997.
Survivors include his mother, Eva Romero, Liberal; four brothers, George Gonzales, Liberal, Allen Romero, Melbourne, Fla., Jonny Gonzales, Wichita, and Jerry Romero, Collinsville, Ill.; four sisters, Susie Martinez, Lamar, Colo., Peggy Jessepe, Horton, Beverly Romero and Joyce Arradondo, both of Liberal; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, Raymond, and one sister, Rosalie Alires.
Welcoming of the body will be at 4 p.m. Friday at St. Anthony Catholic Church with rosary following at 7 p.m.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Henry Hildebrandt presiding.
Burial will follow at the Liberal Cemetery.
Friends may call from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Friday at Miller Mortuary and from 4 to 8 p.m. at the church.
CARL J. LANDERS
PEMBROKE, Fla. -- Carl J. Landers, 65, a former Floris, Okla., resident, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at the Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Fla.
He was born Dec. 18, 1934, to Roy G. and Mary (Hart) Landers in Floris.
He attended school in Floris, Greenough, Okla., and Turpin, Okla., and graduated from high school in Forgan, Okla.
He became a professional jockey and rode at race tracks in Florida, New Jersey and New York, as well as other tracks in the eastern United States. He later became a real estate agent in Florida.
Survivors include one daughter, Tracy Seibold and husband, Mike, Pembroke; three brothers, Charles E. Landers, Dodge City, the Rev. William E. Landers, Corning, Calif., and Roy G. Landers, Claremore, Okla.; one sister, Mary E. Sprague, Beaver, Okla.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Viola M. Bryan.
Funeral services were Friday, May 5, 2000, in Pembroke.
Additional funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the Church of Christ in Forgan with George Saunders presiding.
Burial will follow at the Floris Cemetery
in Floris.
Miller Mortuary in Liberal is in charge of local arrangements.
BONNIE AVIS STOOPS
Bonnie Avis Stoops, 84, of Hugoton, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton.
BILL GORDON
WICHITA -- Bill Gordon, 56, a former Liberal resident, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, of a sudden illness.
He was born Jan. 2, 1944, to Gale and Fern Gordon in Springfield, Mo.
He attended school in West Plains, Mo., and graduated from Southwest Missouri State University in 1966.
He married Janet Cearley in 1966. She survives.
He was employed by GAB Business Services and lived in Liberal from 1969 to 1990, when he moved to Wichita and established Key Claims, a claims office.
Survivors include his wife of the home; his mother of West Plains, Mo.; a daughter, Karla Claycamp and husband, Jeff, Wichita; three brothers, Gale Gordon, Kirkville, Mo., Bob Gordon, Williamsburg, Va., and Jim Gordon, Sparta, Tenn.; one sister, Sue Price, Homosassa, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Amber Buchman and husband, Terry, of Liberal.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Resthaven Mortuary and Cemetery, Wichita.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home.
EDNA SWARTLEY
GARDEN CITY -- Edna Swartley, 96, of Garden City, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at the Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson.
She was born Nov. 2, 1903, to Forrest L. and Eliza (Ingram) Weast in Leedey, Okla.
She worked as a cashier at J.C. Penney's Department Store until after her marriage. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the
First United Methodist Church Women's Circle, both of Garden City.
She married Harold Swartley July 20, 1935, in Garden City. He died in 1976.
Survivors include one son, John Swartley and wife, Barbara, Rogersville, Mo.; one daughter, Carol Anderson and husband, Kenneth, Johnson; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City with the Rev. Janet Hernandez presiding.
Burial will be at the Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.

LAS VEGAS -- Kenneth Lee "Bill" Hendrix, 78, a former Liberal resident and Liberal business owner, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev.
Funeral services are pending with Kitch Funeral Home in Liberal.
BONNIE AVIS STOOPS
HUGOTON -- Bonnie Avis Stoops, 84, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
She was born Nov. 7, 1915, to Monte Lodi and Jessie Grover Brandon Cook in Smith Canyon, Colo.
She had been a resident of Stevens County for 70 years. She was a homemaker and a farmer.
She was a member of the First Christian Church, Hugoton, and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She married Merle Allen Stoops Sept. 9, 1932, in Johnson City. He died June 14, 1995.
Survivors include one son, Jack Stoops, Hugoton; one daughter, Allene Hathaway, Olathe; two sisters, Mickie Powell and Dickie Griffin, both of Sublette; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two daughters, LaJuana Ward and Deann Suddeth; one brother, Donald Clark; and two grandsons.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church in Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey presiding.
Burial will be at the Hugoton Cemetery.

CATHERINE M. KNOTT
PLAINS -- Catherine Marian Knott, 89, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at the Minneola Nursing Home in Minneola.
She was born Oct. 11, 1910, to John Francis and Mary Ann (Kisner) Hinds in Offerle.
She had been a resident of Plains since 1920, and graduated from the Plains High School in 1928.
She married David Glenn Clark Aug. 15, 1929. He died in 1984. She married John "Jack" V. Knott July 23, 1978, in Plains. He died Sept. 9, 1996.
She was a homemaker, a retired teacher and an office manager for Holmes Implement and Elevator and Dr. W. W. Orrison. She at one time owned and operated Marian's Paint and Hobby Shop in Plains.
She was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Altar Society and the Plains Alumni Association, all of Plains and the Kansas Teacher's Association.
Survivors include one daughter, Elsie E. Cottrell, Meade; four grandchildren, William "Bill" Cottrell and wife, Teresa, and Rex Cottrell, all of Meade, Vance
Cottrell and wife, Lisa, VanHorn, Texas, Diana Cottrell, Hays, and Bill Goebel, Jetmore; 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Francis LeRoyal "Lee" Hinds; and one granddaughter, Susan Marie (Cottrell) Goebel on Jan. 25, 1996.
Vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade. Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Plains with Father Zino Ye Swe and Father Leonard Stegman presiding.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade.
Burial will be at the Plains Cemetery.

PAULINE M. EDDINGS
Pauline M. Eddings, 69, died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
She was born Feb. 27, 1931, in Pueblo, Colo.
She married Gerald Eddings. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include three sons, David DeLap and wife, Bonnie, Norwalk, Calif., Dennis DeLap and wife, Carol, and Kenneth DeLap and wife, Liz, all of Pueblo; one daughter, Denise Hartle and husband, John, Liberal; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one son, her parents and eight brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were in Pueblo with burial at Roselawn Cemetery, Pueblo, with T.G. McCarthey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
