LEE CHILES

Lee Chiles, 69, Liberal, died Monday, May 22, 2000, at the Southwest Medical Center, following an extended illness.

He was born Oct. 12, 1930, to Roland and Gracie Chiles in Waxahachie, Texas.

He came to Liberal in the 1940s and worked for Gravey Enterprises Petroleum Inc. for 19 years. Later, he was an oilfield consultant and oilfield pumper for Lowery Exploration. He retired because of ill health.

He was a veteran and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in England with the 301st Air Bombardment Wing which was attached to the 92nd. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge No. 1947 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Lane Day Post No. 3166, Liberal.

He married Juanita Fuller on April 3, 1981, in Perryton, Texas. She survives.

Other survivors include one son, David L. Chiles, Dodge City; four daughters, Mary Ellen Helfrich, Spearville, Sharon Diefort, Dodge City, Linda Lynn Connely, Dodge City, and Patricia Ann Maas, Greensburg; one step-daughter, Deborah E. Kidder, St. Louis, Mo.; one brother, Roland H. Chiles, Jr., Waxahachie; one sister, Verna Mae Bryson, Waxahachie; 12 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one step-daughter.

No memorial services are planned and inurnment will be at Liberal Cemetery at a later date. Miller Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

ANN ALLENE ROGERS

GREAT BEND -- Ann Allene Rogers, 89, died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at Homestead Assisted Living Residence, Great Bend.

She was born Oct. 26, 1910, to Allen Farnsworth and Annie (Wayland) Bennett at the Bennett Ranch, Carson County, Texas.

She married Charles Weldon Rogers Feb. 9, 1932, in Clovis, N.M. He died July 30, 1997.

She had been a resident of Great Bend since September 1999, when she moved from Pampa, Texas.

She was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Fritch, Texas, and she was a homemaker.

Survivors include three sons, R. Roy Rogers, Great Bend, Ron Rogers, Pampa, and G.W. Rogers, Springfield, Texas; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde Bennett and Milton Bennett, and one sister, Madelyn Metcalf.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Homestead Assisted Living Residence under the direction of Bryant-Christians Funeral Home, Great Bend, with the Rev. Dr. Doyle Smith officiating.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Southern Baptist Church, Fritch.

Burial will be at the Panhandle Cemetery under the direction of Milton-Chatwell Funeral Home, Panhandle, Texas.

Memorials may be sent to Faith City Mission in care of Billy Hobbs, 401 E. Second St., Amarillo, TX 79101.

BETTY LOUISE LOEWEN

MOSCOW -- Betty Louise Loewen, 61, died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at Satanta District Hospital.

She was born July 17, 1938, to William J. and Enola (Thompson) Fox at Stevens County.

She was a member of the Girl Scouts and was a 4-H leader for many years. She also judged at county fairs, was a member of a sewing club, and played bridge and bingo.

She was a homemaker and farmed with her husband.

She married Elmer Loewen Aug. 26, 1956, in Moscow. He died Jan. 9, 2000.

Survivors include one son, Jace Kelly Loewen, Moscow; one daughter, Melonie Fisher, Duncan, Okla.; one brother, Bob Fox, Moscow; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Moscow, with the Revs. Larry Bradford and Josue Mora officiating, . Burial will follow at Moscow Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Girl Scouts or 4-H Club, in care of Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton.

GLEN WILKERSON

MANTER -- Glen B. Wilkerson, 81, formerly of Manter, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at St. Catherine's Hospital in Garden City.

He was born April 23, 1919, to Clyde and Flora Mae Wilkerson in Stafford.

He was a farm worker in Stanton County for much of his life. In 1999, he moved to Terrace Gardens in Garden City.

He married Hazel VonHemel July 3, 1938. She died Jan. 12, 1996.

Survivors include two sons, Darrel and Gary Wilkerson, both of Kansas; one daughter, Maxine Malone, Oregon; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jack Wilkerson and Chester Wilkerson, of Louisiana; and one sister, Velda Stolebarger, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by one great-grandson, four brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Manter, with the Rev. Dave Kaufman presiding.

Burial will be at the Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson.

Friends may call on Friday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson.

The family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson, KS 67855.

JENS N. BENDSEN

Jens N. Bendsen, 74, died Monday, May 15, 2000, in Powersite, Mo.

He was born Oct. 11, 1935, to Jens and Gerda Bendsen in Chicago, Ill. He was a resident of St. Louis, Mo.

He married Janice Posl-Bendsen in June, 1993. She survives.

He was a salesman and sold equipment for Quatron.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge.

Other survivors include one daughter, Jan Soderberg, Bryon, Calif.; two grandsons, Eric and Alex Soderberg; two tep-daughters, Lou Lou and Sissy Bendsen, one step-son, Tinker Bensen; his

mother, Gerda Bendsen; and one brother, Vernon Bendsen.

A tribute to life service will be announced at a later date. Organs were donated and the body was cremated at St. Louis Cremation Service, Inc.

A memorial fund has been established at the Community Bank for the Liberal Area Rape Crisis and Domestic Violence Center.

DIORA SALLEY

Diora Salley, 100, died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at Wheatridge Park Care Center, Liberal.

She was born March 4, 1900, to Albert and Susan (Armstrong) Hughes in Parker.

She has been a resident of Liberal since 1925.

She graduated from Meade High School in 1919 and continued her education at Fort Hays State University before going to nurses training at Bethany Hospital in Kansas City and becoming a registered nurse.

She worked at the Epworth Hospital as a surgical nurse in 1925.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, PEO, book club, Liberal Garden Club and American Iris Society. She was Master Iris Judge and a National Flower Show Judge.

She married Herman Salley May 12, 1928, in Kismet. He died in 1975.

Survivors include one son, Richard Salley and wife, Penny, Portland, Ore.; two grandchildren, Linda Salley and Sara Salley; one great-grandchild, Richard Incorvia.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, and three sisters, Mary Frame, Mildred Ware and Pearl Clark.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Kitch Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Phil Shull presiding. Burial will follow at Liberal Cemetery.

Friends and family may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, and 9 a.m. until service time Friday at Kitch Funeral Home.

Memorials may be sent to First United Methodist Church, Seward County Community College Scholarship Fund, Southwestern College Scholarship Fund, or Iliff School of Theology in care of Kitch Funeral Home.

PEARL CAREY

MEADE -- Pearl Carey, 100, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at her home in Meade.

She was born Dec. 31, 1899, to Giles R. and Eliza Carolyn (Brown) Rountree in Norman, Okla.

She married George H. Carey May 14, 1928, in Dodge City. He died Dec. 6, 1979.

She was a homemaker.

She moved to Meade in 1931 when she and her husband became owners and publishers of the Meade Globe Press. They sold their newspaper and retired in 1971.

She celebrated her 100th birthday at the home of her daughter, Karen Carey, in Mesa, Ariz.

She belonged to the United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary, both of Meade.

Survivors include three daughters, Norma Daeschner, Dodge City, Marjorie Zimbelman, Lodi, Calif. and Karen Carey, Mesa; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters and one grandson.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Fidler-Orme Mortuary Chapel, Meade, with the Rev. Chuck Mattix presiding.

Friends may call from 1-6 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the mortuary. Burial will be at the Graceland Cemetery, Meade.

Memorials are suggested to the Meade United Methodist Church or Hospice of the Prairie, both in care of the mortuary.

NOAH NICHOLS

MONTEZUMA -- Noah Nichols, 89, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at Bethel Home Inc. in Montezuma.

He was a former Salem community resident of Copeland. He moved into the Bethel He moved into the Bethel Home

apartments in January of 1997.

He was born Nov. 1, 1910, to Cornelius P. and Lizzie (Dirks) Nichols in Tampa.

He married Frances Koehn Oct. 23, 1932, at Salem Mennonite Church in Copeland.

He moved from Greensburg to the Copeland area in 1931, where he was a farmer.

He was a member of the Salem Mennonite Church in Copeland.

Survivors include his wife; eight sons, Manford Nichols and wife, Deloris, Sublette, Howard Nichols and wife, Josie, Ulysses, Milton Nichols and wife, JoAnn, Elkton, S.D., Clayton Nichols and wife, Judy, Copeland, Chester Nichols and wife, Connie, Garden City, Lester Nichols and wife, Sondra, Garden City, Wilferd Nichols and wife, Jackie, Copeland, Milferd Nichols and wife, Peggy, Dalhart, Texas; two daughters, Valette Koehn and husband, John, Sublette, and Velda Wadel and husband, Darrell, Greensburg; one brother, Johnny Nichols and wife, Marie, Macon, Miss.; three sisters, Frances Jantz, Greensburg, Leah Unruh and husband, Claude, Montezuma, Esther Wedel and husband, John, Brooksville, Miss.; 34 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Joyce Weibe; four brothers, Jesse, Franklin, Menno and Abe Nichols; five sisters, Katie Koehn, Sophie Nichols, Minnie Koehn, Clara Koehn and Susie Unruh.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Salem Mennonite Church in Copeland with the Revs. Sam Unruh Jr., Roy Keohn and Milton Unruh presiding. Burial will be at the Salem Mennonite Church Cemetery, Copeland.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Montezuma Funeral Home.

Memorials have been established for either the Bethel Home Inc. or Lockport Ambulance Fund. Memorials may be mailed to Montezuma Funeral Home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.
