ELIZABETH M. MENDENHALL

FOWLER -- Elizabeth M. Mendenhall, 88, died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at the Minneola Nursing Home in Minneola.

She was born Nov. 16, 1911, to Emery D. and Elsie (Stair) Nelson in East Lynn, Mo.

She married Howard E. Mendenhall Aug. 19, 1936, in Fowler. He survives.

She graduated from Fowler High School in 1930 and attended college at Fort Hays State University and Emporia State University

She was a homemaker and a former teacher. She had been a resident of Fowler most of her life.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Auxiliary, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Christian Matrons, all of Fowler.

Other survivors include one son, Chet Mendenhall, Coldwater; three daughters, Joan Dykstra, Honolulu, Jean Hatfield and Barbara Clark, both of Fowler; one sister, Ruth Turner, Wichita, 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Forrest Nelson, and two sons, Billy and Forrest E. Mendenhall.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church, Fowler, with the Revs. Bill Eaton and Alan Synder presiding.

Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Tuesday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary, Meade. Burial will be at the Fowler Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Fowler First Christian Church or to Manhattan Bible College, both in care of the mortuary.

MILDRED L. OSBORN

Mildred L. Osborn, 88, died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at her residence at Alterra in Liberal.

She was born March 2, 1912, to Owen and Della (Riley) Johnston in Cameron, Mo.

She married W.W. "Ossie" Osborn May 25, 1935, in Emporia. He died July 17, 1973.

She has been a resident of Liberal since 1960 after moving here from Louisburg.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the First

United Methodist Church, Liberal, the Order of the Eastern Star, Louisburg.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice Williamson and husband, Jerry, St. John, Deanna Bean and husband, Richard, Liberal; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Fankhouser, Madison, and Audrey Johnston, Seaside, Calif.; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, eight sisters and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Phil Shull presiding. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Crown Hill Cemetery, Coldwater, with the Rev. Larry Popavich presiding.

Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. Monday at Kitch Funeral Home.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice of the Prairie in care of Kitch Funeral Home, 1212 W. Second St., Liberal, KS 67901.

LEONA ELIZABETH HAEFFNER

HUGOTON -- Leona Elizabeth Haeffner, 81, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at her home in Hugoton.

She was born Dec. 29, 1918, to Grant Leroy and Myrtle Viola (Hahn) Carl in Conception Junction, Mo.

She married Walter Haeffner April 23, 1936, in Atchison. He survives.

She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Leavenworth.

Other survivors include three daughters, Janet Bell and husband, Hugh, Columbia, Md., Sharon Parsons and husband, Edwin, Hugoton, and Elaine Weyer and husband, Paul, Highlands Ranch, Colo.; one brother, Robert Carl, Leavenworth; one sister, Gladys Leach, Borger, Texas; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Francis Bachnick and Darlene Fulk; and two brothers, Clarence Carl and Grant Carl Jr.

Burial will be at Mt. Muncie Cemetery, Leavenworth.

Arrangements in Hugoton are under the direction of Paul's Funeral Home. Arrangements in Leavenworth are under the direction of Belden-Sexton-Sumpter Funeral Chapels.

CATHERINE D. SOUPISET ALTON

ELKHART -- Catherine D. Soupiset Alton, 89, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at Morton County Care Center, in Elkhart.

She was born Dec. 31, 1910, to Simon Edwin and Emma Clara (Link) Schroth in Ellenwood.

She married Robert Soupiset on Oct. 21, 1930, in Dodge City. He died in 1968. She then married Gilbert Alton in 1979. He died in 1980.

She has been a resident of Elkhart since 1920.

She was a homemaker and bookkeeper.

She was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, both of Elkhart.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Soupiset Jr., Plant City, Fla., Ron Soupiset and Don Soupiset, both of Elkhart; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Elkhart, with the Rev. David Kraus presiding. Burial will follow at the Elkhart Cemetery.

The rosary will be at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Harrell Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to St. Joan of Arc Building Renovation Fund, in care of the funeral home.

LAVERNE H. "ANDY" ANDERSEN

WICHITA -- Laverne H. "Andy" Andersen, 80, died Saturday, May 27, 2000, in Wichita.

He was born Feb. 16, 1920, to Marcus Sorn and Johanna (Fausler) Andersen in Filley, Neb.

He married Florence Marie Andersen in September 1944, in Olathe. She survives.

He was a retired banker, real estate broker and property manager.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II.

Other survivors include two daughters, Connie Fetters and husband, Don, Denver, and Andrea Scarpelli and husband, James, Wichita; one sister, Jenny Armstrong, Filley; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Fetters, Virginia Beach, Va., Kristy Entz, Wichita, and Audra Scarpelli, Wichita; one grandson-in-law, Bryan Entz, Wichita; and one great-grandson, Kyle Entz, Wichita.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Downing & Lahey Mortuary West Chapel.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today at the Downing & Lahey Mortuary West Chapel, Wichita.

KENNETH R. MERRITT

CURTIS, Neb. -- Kenneth R. Merritt, 76, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center, in North Platte, Neb.

He was born Feb. 13, 1924, to Clarence and Majorie (Mackey) Merritt in Binghamton, N.Y.

He married Iola M. Barts Sept. 4, 1944, in New York. They would have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary this year. She survives.

He started supporting himself at the age of 12, delivering newspapers, ice cream, and working in produce fields.

He served in the U.S. military from 1943-46 with the U.S. Navy Corps of Engineers with the NTSB, Sampson, N.Y.; the USNATB, Morro Bay, Calif.; CUB 17, San Francisco; and with USNB Navy No. 1173.

He worked as bus supervisor with the Unified School District No. 483, Plains, from 1968 until 1981 when he retired.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post No. 6930, Maywood, Neb., and a past member of BPOE, Liberal.

Other survivors include three daughters, Donna Bostwick and husband, Mickey, Florence, Colo., Judy Hoover and husband, Ralph, Pueblo West, Colo., and Peggy Borchers and husband, Robert, Plains; four sons, Dennis Merritt and wife, Sherry, Maywood, Wayne Merritt and wife, Thelma, Munster, Western Australia, Gary Merritt and wife, Debra, Lincoln, Neb., and Bruce Merritt and wife, Cindy, Wellfleet, Neb.; one sister, Bernice Delamarter, New York; 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Daniel Smith, Australia; and one granddaughter, Mistelle Merritt.

Private family services were held Tuesday with the Rev. Dale Heimer presiding. Cremation followed.

Memorial services will be at a later date, with the burial of ashes in the Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell, Neb.

KENNETH D. SHIRLEY

JONESBORO, Ark. -- Kenneth D. Shirley, 67, died Monday, May 29, 2000, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro, following a lengthy illness.

He was born Jan. 30, 1933, to Eugene and Olga (Abernathy) Shirley in Arbyrd, Mo.

He graduated from Greene County Tech and lived in Mena, Ark., Kansas City, Mo., and Liberal before moving to Jonesboro 11 years ago.

He worked in banking for over 35 years, serving as vice president of a

bank in Mena. He later became a computer programmer and software program writer and worked several years for Financial Advantage Services of Jonesboro before retirement.

He was a member of the Jonesboro Worship Center where he had served on the Board of Deacons.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara (Hook) Shirley, of the home; two sisters, Linda Ford, Arbyrd, and Peggy Wiebusch, Fridley, Minn.; two nephews, and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Terry Dale Shirley.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Emerson Memorial Chapel, Jonesboro, with the Rev. Stephen Judd presiding. Burial will follow in Nettleton Cemetery under the direction of Emerson Funeral Home, Jonesboro.

Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

DONALD "DONNIE" HERGERT

SPEARMAN, Texas -- Donald "Donnie" Hergert, 51, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Golden Plains Community Hospital in Borger, Texas.

He was born Sept. 20, 1948, to Donald and Lila M. Hergert in Topeka.

He graduated from Liberal High School and Wichita State University.

He was the owner of a car dealership.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, Spearman, and a 3rd Degree Mason and Demolay, Liberal.

Survivors include his mother; two sons, Kirby Keith Hergert, Amarillo, Texas, and Clayton Neil Hergert, Annapolis Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md.; and two brothers, Darl Hergert, Perryton, Texas, and Kurtis Hergert, Indianapolis, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church, Spearman, with the Rev. Gary Smith presiding.

The service is under the direction of Brown Funeral Directors, Borger.

GLADYS RUTH OLIVER

Johnson -- Gladys Ruth Oliver, 77, died Monday, May 29, 2000, at her home in rural Stanton County.

She was born June 25, 1922, to Stonewall and Viola Ruth (Carter) Oliver in Grant County.

She moved to northeast Stanton County in 1937 where she farmed and ranched her entire life on the Rest Haven Ranch.

She was president of her senior class and graduated from Johnson High School in 1940.

She was a member of the Stanton County and Grant County Historical Societies, and served as president, secretary, treasurer and reporter of the Pleasant Hour Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Johnson, with the Rev. Dave Kaufmann presiding.

Memorials may be sent to the Stanton County Historical Society, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson, KS 67855.

ROBERT LEWIS HOEFERT

Robert Lewis Hoefert, infant son of Crystal L. Moore and George Trimpe, died Friday, May 26, 2000, at the Southwest Medical Center.

Other survivors include grandparents, Robert and Pat Hoefert, Jacksonville, Fla., and Mr. and Mrs. Trimpe, Hooker, Okla.; and great-grandmother, Doris Welch, North Platte, Neb.

Private burial was in the Liberal Cemetery with the Rev. Phil Shull presiding. Miller Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
