Lester Marlatt, 83, of Atchison, KS, died Monday, February 23rd, 2009 doing what he loved to do, work at his shop.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 27th, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Lee Hendon, officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison, KS. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 PM on Thursday, February 26th, 2009 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association or the Mt. Vernon Cemetery Association and may be left in care of the funeral home. Lester was born on July 31, 1925 in Atchison, KS the son of Charles Lester and Velda E. (Cox) Marlatt. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1943. Mr. Marlatt was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran having served in the south pacific. He was a farmer and owned and operated for over 53 years the Marlatt Construction Company, Atchison, KS. Mr. Marlatt was a member of the First Christian Church, was a lifetime member of the Fleming-Jackson-Seever American Legion Post # 6 and the VFW Post # 1175, both of Atchison, KS. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, the LICA (Land Improvement Contractors of America) and served for many years on the Mt. Vernon Cemetery Board. Mr. Marlatt enjoyed working, going to equipment auctions and especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was married to Ruthanna Hazell on March 1, 1947 at the First Christian Church, Olathe, KS. Mrs. Marlatt survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons, Tom (Susie) Marlatt, Atchison, KS, Steven (Patty) Marlatt, Atchison, KS, a daughter, Mrs. Shirley (Charles) Cline, Atchison, KS, a daughter-in-law, Karen (Marlatt)Hardesty, Peoria, IL, a brother, Roy Marlatt, Effingham, KS, a sister, Mary Jeanne Hinnen, Merriam, KS, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. His parents, a son, Morton Marlatt, ( April 3, 2005), a granddaughter, Madison Marlatt, and a brother, Milton Marlatt preceded him in death.

Jane Smith, 89, of Atchison, KS, died Saturday February 21, 2009 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, February 26, 2009 at the Trinity Episcopal Church with Fr. Andrew Grosso, Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church officiating. The body has been cremated and interment of the cremated remains will follow in the Trinity Episcopal Garden. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church and will have a reception at the church hall following the committal services in the garden. Mary Jane Robinson was born on December 4, 1919 in Atchison, KS, the daughter of Dr. Charles W. and Elizabeth Jane “Bessie”(Morris) Robinson. She attended Washington grade school, and graduated from Atchison High School. She graduated from Kansas University with a degree in fine arts. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and on the Altar Guild. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, and a 60 year member of the Chapter J, PEO Sisterhood. During World War II, Mrs. Smith was a volunteer for several service organizations. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker, and she enjoyed cooking, gardening and especially her family and grandchildren. She was dearly loved and cared for by a wide circle of family and friends.

She was married to Fritz Smith on November 14, 1945 in Atchison, KS. Fritz survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son, Charles R. and his wife Iris Smith, San Antonio, TX, two granddaughters, Ashley N. Smith, Washington, DC, and Caitlin H. Smith, San Antonio, TX, and several nieces and nephews. Her parents preceded her in death.

Margie B. Church ,95, of Atchison, KS, died Friday, February 20, 2009 at Vintage Park.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM on Tuesday, February 24th, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Lee Hendon officiating. Burial will follow in the Sugar Creek Cemetery, Rushville, MO. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Abundant Life Hospice and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Margie B. Faris was born on Oct. 18, 1913 in Rushville, MO, the daughter of William S. and Sallie M. (Bunton) Faris. She lived in Missouri until 1945 when they moved to Salina, KS. Margie worked as a sales clerk for a gift shop in Salina, Kansas before moving back to Atchison in 1982. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Atchison, KS, and was a 50 year member and Past Matron of the Martha Washington Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Issi Shrine, Salina, KS. She enjoyed sewing, embroidery and crocheting.

She was married to Ralph L. Church on May 9th, 1933 in Atchison, KS. Mr. Church survives of the home. Additional survivors include a brother-in-law, William T. Church, Amazonia, MO, and a number of nieces and nephews. Her parents, five brothers, and five sisters also preceded her in death.

Felix Sovin 87, Atchison, KS died Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at his home.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS. A memorial mass is planned for later this summer in Philadelphia where Mr. Sovin’s cremated remains will be interred. Memorials are suggested to the Atchison Catholic Elementary Schools and may be left in care of the funeral home. Condolences to the family may be left on-line at www.beckerdyer.com.

Mr. Sovin was born on April 9, 1921 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Michael and Anna (Vinyiek) Sovin. Mr. Sovin was a decorated U.S. Navy sailor in World War II having stayed with the USS O’Brien after a Japanese destroyer sank it. A retired welder, Mr. Sovin had lived in Atchison for 52 years, he was a Catholic, and enjoyed reading and walking.

Felix was married to Dorothy Stiles in 1942, she preceded him in death on Sept. 6, 1991. Survivors include two daughters, Jacqueline (Max) King, Lauraline (Don) Miller, Kansas City, MO, a sister, Elizabeth Grasso, Williamstown, NJ, three grandchildren, Cameron King, Gardner, KS, Courtney (King) Arroy, Dallas, TX, Mallory Miller, Kansas City, MO, and one great granddaughter, Isabel Arroy, He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Donna L. Myers ,78, of Lancaster, KS, died Wednesday, February 18th, 2009 at the Tri-County Nursing Home, Horton, KS.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 21st, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Alderson Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until time of service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Tri-County Manor Nursing Home-residents fund and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Donna L. Harl was born on April 14, 1930 in Atchison, KS, the daughter of John and Lois R. (Smith) Harl. She attended Atchison High School and worked as a sewer for Saunders Mop Manufacturing Company for over 38 years. She enjoyed all kinds of sewing projects, and collected many things. She especially enjoyed her pets, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Donna was married to Howard Earl Myers in Sabetha, KS on Jan. 10, 1948. Mr. Myers preceded her in death on Oct. 29th, 1993. Her parents, two brothers, Eban and William Harl, and son-in-law, James Day also preceded her in death. Survivors include a son, Russell (Cathy) Myers, Lancaster, KS, two daughters; Linda Irene Day, Holton, KS, and Janet Lynn(Richard) Prochaska, Hiawatha, KS, one sister, Anna Clare Allen, Atchison, KS, two sister-in-laws, Bena Harl, Onley, Maryland and Vergie Harl, Overland Park, KS, eight grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Michael B. Coulter, 54 of Atchison, KS, died Monday, February 16th, 2009 at the Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, MO.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, February 21, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until time of service on Saturday at the funeral home. Mike was born on March 31, 1954 in Cody, Wyoming, the son of Malin B. and Wanda (Lloyd) Coulter. He attended Atchison High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1972. Mike enjoyed restoring wood floors in his historical home. He loved fishing along the Missouri River and was an avid hunter of arrowheads. He was loved by family and a great many friends who will miss him deeply.

He was married to Sherri Turpin on May 24th, 1975 in Atchison, KS and were together for 36 years. Mrs. Coulter survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons; Steve (Jamie) Coulter, Ft. Calhoun, NE, and Kevin Vaughn, of the home. Two brothers; Ronny Coulter and Billy Taylor, both of Atchison, KS, three sisters; Larue Rose, Kathy Roles, Sandy Boger, all of Atchison, KS, two granddaughters; Jordan Michelle Coulter, Taylor LeAnn Coulter, Ft. Calhoun, NE. His father Malin B. Coulter, preceded him in death.

Blanche Amelia Tull, 94, of Effingham, KS, passed away Saturday, February 14, 2009 at her son’s home in Effingham.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday, February 20, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, with Rev. Stephen Lucas, officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery, Atchison. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Tull are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Town & Country Senior Center of Effingham . Blanche Amelia Justice was born December 14, 1914 in Bethany, MO the daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Hoover) Justice. She attended schools in Muscotah, KS and had worked at Wilson’s Poultry, Horton Garment Factory, Electra Company, Atchison Leather Products and Heep’m Up Ice Cream Store, all of Atchison. Blanche enjoyed crocheting, sewing and working on word puzzles. She was a member of Faith Bible Fellowship Church, Atchison, the Farmington Home Demonstration Unit, 48’s at Effingham and the Effingham Senior Citizens Club.

Blanche and Joseph Benjamin Tull were married on September 4, 1935 in Hiawatha, KS. Joseph preceded Blanche in death on December 8, 1983. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Joseph ‘Don’ Tull; four brothers, Arthur, John, Clifford and Everett Justice; four sisters, Nora Endicott, Gladys Justice, Bessie Peek and Vesper Hinz; one granddaughter, Elicia Collins; one grandson, Ronnie Tull; one great grandson, Lamar Gable; one great-great grandson, James Reynolds III.

Survivors include her two sons, Howard Tull and William ‘Bill’ (Lourdes) Tull, both of Effingham, KS, two daughters; Lois (David) Wilbourn of Effingham and Sue (Monte) Minard of Atchison, two sister-in-laws; Pauline Tull and Susie Justice; 47 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.
