LUKE AUSTIN
ULYSSES -- Luke Austin, 59, died Saturday, July 8, 2000, at his home in Ulysses.
He was born Nov. 7, 1940, to Luke and Helen (Martin) Austin in Oklahoma City, Okla.
He married Jadda Carol Shipley May 5, 1980, in Ulysses. She survives.
He was a resident of Ulysses for the past 22 years, moving there from Yuma, Ariz.
He worked as a truck driver and for Grant County Feeders.
He served in the United States Marines. He was a veteran of the Vietnam war.
He was a member of the Roselane Church of God in Ulysses.
Other survivors include three daughters, Le Ann Friese, Phoenix, Ariz., Lorie Martin, Hugoton, and Georgianna Dotson, Beale Air Force Base in California; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Roselane Church of God in Ulysses with the Rev. Michael Wirt presiding.
Military rites will follow the service with Charles B. Hart, Post 79 American Legion in Ulysses presiding. Cremation will follow the services.
Friends may call at Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton today, Tuesday or until service time Wednesday.
DORIS M. AMERIN
DODGE CITY -- Doris M. Amerin, 72, died Monday, July 10, 2000, at her home in Dodge City.
She was born Jan. 1, 1928, to Anastas and Anna (Jacobs) Werth in Ellis.
She married Casper "Cap" Amerin Nov. 27, 1964, in Great Bend. He died April 20, 1995.
She had been a resident of Plains since 1964 before moving to Dodge City in 1997. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church, the VFW Auxiliary and the Altar Society, all of Plains.
Survivors include three sons, Verlyn Smith, Branson, Mo., David Smith, Grove, Okla., and William "Bill" Smith, Plains; five daughters, Carol Stegman, Lincoln, Kay Kost, Hugoton, and Janelle Kenton, Gaylene "Gay" Bauer and Rhnae Schneweis, all of Dodge City; 20 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Ronald J. Smith, June 18, 1970; one sister, Hattie Degenhardt; and one brother, Marvin Werth.
Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. today and funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, both at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Plains with Father Zeno Ye Swe presiding.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade.
Burial will be at the Plains Cemetery
in Plains.

GLADYS RODRIGUEZ
Gladys Rodriguez, 75, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at her home in Liberal following an extended illness.
She was born Aug. 16, 1924, to Wallace O. and Mary C. (Haehn) Hemet in Selkerk.
She married Margarito "Lucky" Rodriguez Sept. 14, 1958, in Las Vegas, Nev. He survives.
Other survivors include five sons, David and Danny Rodriguez, both of Liberal, Donnie Rodriguez, Monroe, Ore., Jerry Turley, Garden City, and Bill Setters, Fairfield, Calif.; four daughters, Patty Stegman, Liberal, Jo An Petrey, Hobbs, N.M., Sharon Hartman, Lincoln City, Ore., and Paula Price, Irving, Texas; 24 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, one brother and her parents.
Memorial services were conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 6, 2000, at the Miller Chapel with the Rev. Rex Petty presiding.
The family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Miller Mortuary, 908 N. Lincoln, Liberal, KS 67905.
MARGUERITE DEAN WRIGHT
SUBLETTE -- Marguerite Dean Wright, 76, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at her daughter's home in Sublette.
She was born Dec. 11, 1923, to Walter J. and Maggie (Love) Cagle, in Knox City, Texas.
She married Novell L. Wright May 10, 1939, in Knox City. He died Aug. 12, 1984.
She and her husband moved to Sublette in 1968, moving there from Knox City, where she had spent most of her life. They then moved back to Knox City in 1973. She moved back to Sublette in April 2000, due to ill health, to be close to her daughter.
She was a homemaker. She was also a bookkeeper for an agriculture business.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sublette.
Survivors include three sons, Larry Wright, Sublette, Rodney Wright and wife, Kittie, and Arlis Wright and wife, Terri, all of Abilene, Texas; two daughters, Beverly Hall and husband, Larry, Sublette, and Tammya Bowzer, Rockledge, Fla.; two sisters, Pauline Marion, and Stella Curd and husband, William, all of Knox City; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Elmwood Chapel in Abilene, with the Rev. Darrell Marion presiding. Burial will follow at the Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery
in Abilene.
Friends may call until 6 p.m. today at Haskell County Funeral Home in Sublette.

MAXINE SMITH HERBEL
HUGOTON -- Maxine Smith Herbel, 82, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at Huerfano Medical Center in Walsenburg, Colo.
She was born Jan. 21, 1918, to Robert Leslie Smith Sr. and Ethyl Lahey in Hugoton.
She married Charles "Chuck" E. Herbel July 24, 1938, in Hugoton. He died July 4, 1997.
She was a homemaker.
She was also a lifetime resident of the area.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hugoton.
Survivors include two sons, Stephen R. Herbel, Shreveport, La., and Charles E. Herbel, Elk City; and eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert Leslie Smith Jr.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Nel Holmes presiding.
Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church, Hugoton, in care of Paul's Funeral Home, 314 S. Van Buren St., Hugoton, KS 67951.
CHARLES E. GAREY
Johnson -- Charles E. Garey, 86, died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson.
He was born March 10, 1914, to Frank W. and Minnie R. (Little) Garey in Stafford County.
He married Irene Lucas March 10, 1937. She died Feb. 25, 1975.
He married Virginia (Julian) Barstow Nov. 27, 1975. She survives.
He was a resident of Stanton County since 1939. He farmed until his retirement in 1970.
He was a member of the Bethel Church of the Nazarene and served as a church board member.
He also served on the Johnson Coop Board, the Stanton County Library Board and the ASCS Board. He was the past president of the Kansas Flying Farmers.
Other survivors include two step-sons, Neil Barstow and wife, Belinda, Corsicana, Texas, and Greg Barstow and wife, Charlotte, Kansas City, Mo.; one brother, Melvin Garey, Johnson; one sister, Helen Withall, Boca Raton, Fla.; four step-grandchildren, Justin Barstow, Kansas City, Mo., Dana Barstow, Denver, and Erica and Mandy Barstow, Corsicana.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Bethel Church of the Nazarene, 10 miles south of Big Bow, with the Rev. Tom Boese presiding.
Burial will be at the Stanton County Cemetery
in Johnson.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at the Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson.
