HOWARD C. LINDENMUTH

Howard C. Lindenmuth, 74, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at his home in Liberal.

He was born Oct. 10, 1926, to Earl C. and L. Pearl (Carson) Lindenmuth in Scott City.

He married Effie M. Kulow Oct. 15, 1972, in Liberal. She died March 24, 1998.

He attended school and graduated from Scott High School in Scott City, where he had been a half-mile runner.

He farmed for several years before entering the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of World War II.

He was employed by Ideal Foods in Scott City and later transferred to Liberal in 1971. He then became produce manager and cashier at Safeway in Liberal. He retired in 1995.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the 20th Century Sunday School Class, both of Liberal.

He was also a member of VFW Lane Day Post No. 3166, where he held several offices and assisted with Bingo and other activities, and the American Legion.

His hobbies included bowling and running.

Survivors include one step-son, Gary Mitchell and wife, Kathy, Joplin, Mo.; one step-daughter, Linda Lee Moore, Chico, Calif.; two brothers, Everett Lindenmuth and wife, Gloria, Scott City, and Karl Lindenmuth and wife, Gelene, Wamego; six step-grandchildren; and many step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Miller Chapel in Liberal with the Rev. Phil Shull presiding.

Burial with military honors will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Liberal.

Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. until service time Saturday at Miller Mortuary in Liberal. The casket will remain closed.

FAY (COX) MILBURN

HOOKER, Okla. -- Fay (Cox) Milburn, 79, a longtime Hooker resident, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at St. Bernardine Medical Center in San Bernardino, Calif.

She was born Aug. 19, 1921, to Thomas Jefferson and Mary Louisa (Beesley) Cox in Stevens County.

She married Vernon Milburn Nov. 17, 1945, in Liberal. He survives.

She attended school in Hugoton and graduated in 1943.

She and her husband moved from Rolla to Hooker in 1973.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Hooker United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

She was also a member of the American Auxiliary.

Other survivors include one son, Gene Milburn and wife, Jean, Derby; two daughters, Marlyse Milburn, San Bernardino, and Susan Franklin and husband, Les, Liberal; three brothers, Van Cox, Wichita, Roy Cox, Rolla, and Jeff Cox, Missouri City, Texas; one sister, Pearl Lenz, Wichita; five grandchildren, Shannon Milburn, Justin Milburn, Gena Milburn, all of Derby, and Holly Williams and Ryan Franklin, both of Liberal; and one great-granddaughter, Haley Williams.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Eva Mueller; and three brothers, Bur Cox, Guy Cox and Ray Cox.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Hooker United Methodist Church in Hooker with the Rev. Dean Wynn presiding.

Burial will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association in care of Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, P.O. Box 745, Hooker, OK 73945.

LEON S. PENA

ULYSSES -- Leon S. Pena, 78, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at his home in Ulysses.

He was born April 17, 1923, to Fermin and Esther (Silva) Pena in Denison, Texas.

He married Mary Mendoza Jan. 16, 1954, in Childress, Texas. She survives.

He had been a resident of Ulysses since 1960, and had lived in Johnson.

He was a farmer and had been employed for Marvin's Farm Equipment Repair for the past 11 years.

He was a member of Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses and the Knights of Columbus.

Other survivors include two sons, Henry Pena, Liberal and Leon Pena Jr., Ulysses; one daughter, Patricia Kinsinger, Ulysses; one brother, Frank Pena, Dallas; two sisters, Eva Anderson, Denison, and Christina Diehl, Fort Worth, Texas; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Francin Pena and Esther Pena.

A Rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Friday and funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, both at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses with the Rev. Louis Trung Dinh Hoang presiding.

Burial will be at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.

The family suggests memorials to Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

MADISON M. VARDEMAN

ULYSSES -- Madison Marie Vardeman, Ulysses, was stillborn Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

She was the daughter of Justin and Shiella Marie (Wise) Vardeman.

Survivors include her parents; grandparents, Bud and Samma Wise and Joe Bill and Terri Vardeman, all of Ulysses; great-grandparents, Otehka Wise and Robert and Eunice Comer, all of Ulysses, Jo Vardeman, Dallas, and Larry and Evelyn Barnard, Levelland, Texas; and two aunts, Jayme Vardeman, Ulysses, and Cherie Pennington, Tahlequah, Okla.

She was preceded in death by two great-grandfathers, James Windol Wise and Bill Vardeman; two uncles, James Wise and Robert Wise; and great-grandmother, Eileen Comer.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses with Minister Warren Baldwin presiding.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Grant County Funeral Home in Ulysses.

Memorials are suggested to the family in care of Grant County Funeral Home, 218 S. Main, Ulysses, KS 67880.

MARYBYRD VILLINES

SHAWNEE, Okla. -- Marybyrd Villines, 90, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at the Shawnee local nursing home.

She was born Oct. 30, 1910, to Samuel and Sarah Jane (Dean) Webster in Broken Arrow, Okla.

She married E.S. "Jack" Villines May 3, 1941, in Dallas. He died May 29, 1985.

She graduated from Brownsville High School in Brownsville, Texas.

She was the first official secretary of the superintendent of schools in Brownsville. She was also employed as the secretary to the president at Brownsville College and worked for Mid-Continent and Standard Oil, and Coates Oil and Acid Engineers.

She was a 50-year member and Past Matron of the Lakin Chapter No. 244 of the Order of Eastern Star.

She was a Red Cross gray lady and a leader of Girl Scout Troop White Fair. She was the secretary of the Federated Womans Club, the secretary of Civil Air Patrol and a member of the golf club, all in Liberal.

She founded the 11-1 Bridge Club in Lakin.

Survivors include two grandsons, Jack Robin Schawo, Shawnee, and Derrick Keith Schawo, Tacoma, Wash.; one granddaughter, Nicole L. Schawo Denny, Shawnee; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Sara Maree Schawo Aug. 25, 1992; two sisters; and one brother.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Shawnee with the Father Percy Jerkins presiding.

Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hillside Cemetery in Purcell, Okla.

Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel in Shawnee is in charge of arrangements.

DORALEEN WILSON

HOOKER, Okla. -- Doraleen Wilson, 80, a longtime Hooker resident, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Guymon.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Gospel of Grace Church in Hooker with Pastor Tim Elsner presiding.

Burial will be at the Hooker Cemetery under the direction of Roberts Brothers Funeral Home in Hooker.

MERREL KUYKENDALL

TURPIN, Okla. -- Merrel Kuykendall, 89, died Friday, June 1, 2001, at his home in Turpin.

Funeral services are pending and will be announced by Miller Mortuary in Liberal.
