ADRIAN KERNS

PERRYTON, Texas -- Adrian Kerns, 74, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, in Woodward, Okla.

He was born Feb. 4, 1927, to Floyd and Nora Kerns in Gray, Okla.

He married Gequetta Nunnelee June 9, 1956, in Goodwell, Okla. She survives.

He had been a lifetime resident of Perryton.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a teacher at Perryton Junior High School from 1955 to 1987.

He was a member and elder at the Community Christian Church in Perryton.

He was a past board member of the activity center in Perryton.

Other survivors include one son, Dane Kerns, Smyer, Texas; one daughter, Darsha Blair, Amarillo, Texas; one brother, Cleo Kerns, Laurel, Miss.; and two sisters, Leah Hood, Liberal, and LaVada Lee, Booker, Texas; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Community Christian Church in Perryton with Jim O'Banion presiding.

Burial will be at Gray Cemetery in Gray, Okla.

The family suggests memorials to Perryton and Vicinity Activity Center, 1201 SW 15th, Perryton, TX 79070.

Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home Inc. in Perryton is in charge of arrangements.

BONNIE L. NICKLE

NEVADA, Mo. -- Bonnie Lucile Nickle, 81, formerly of Liberal, died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada.

She was born June 9, 1919, to John Alfred and Myrtle Cricket (Myers) Holmes in Dighton.

She graduated from Dighton High School and Fort Hays State College.

She was a school teacher and taught at various schools in Kansas, including Dighton, Cunningham, Hardtner and Montezuma.

After retirement, she was employed as a secretary and receptionist at Streiff Chiropractic in Liberal and gave private piano lessons.

She lived in Liberal until 1994, when she moved to Nevada.

She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Nevada.

Survivors include three daughters, Janet Largent, Garden City, Frances West, Nevada and Nancy Schupman, Springfield, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, John A. Holmes; and one sister, Leatha Bradstree.

Memorial services will be held Sunday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Nevada with George Brown presiding.

Cremation has already taken place and the ashes were returned to Dighton for burial.

Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada was in charge of arrangements.

MARILYN L. WARD

LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- Marilyn Louise Ward, 76, Raton, N.M., died Thursday, May 24, 2001, in Pueblo, Colo.

She was born Aug. 31, 1924, in Pittsburgh.

She married Thomas Eugene Ward Sept. 12, 1947, in Ponca City. He survives.

She had lived in Liberal for many years, and her husband had been the band director at Liberal High School.

She was a homemaker.

She was a resident of Raton.

Her hobbies included arts and crafts and gardening.

Other survivors include two sons, Randy Ward, Derby, and John Scott Ward, Elizabeth, Colo.; one daughter, Cindy Wagner, Littleton, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. June 1 at the Christ Baptist Church in Lakewood.

Burial was at the Fort Logan National Cemetery.

Horan and McConaty Funeral Service in Lakewood was in charge of arrangements.

PAULENE BROWN

Paulene Brown, 87, Liberal, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

Funeral services are pending and will be announced by Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

CHESTER L. GARRISON

PLAINS -- Chester L. Garrison, 86, Plains, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, in an automobile accident near Plains.

Funeral services are pending and will be announced Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade.

VIRGINIA FLUMMERFELT

ULYSSES -- Virginia Marie Flummerfelt, 74, Ulysses, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.

She was born Oct. 18, 1926, to Joseph Robert and Mabel E. (Wallstrom) Lyle in Liberal.

She married Albert Andrew "Buck" Flummerfelt Feb. 16, 1947, in Ulysses. He died Sept. 10, 1984.

She graduated from Grant County Rural High School.

She had been a lifetime resident of Ulysses.

She was employed as a receptionist at Ulysses Medical Center for 28 years.

She was a member of the PTA, Grant County Scholarship Board, Jr. Civic, and the fund raising chairman for the American Heart Association.

Survivors include three sons, Andy Flummerfelt, Hutchinson, Roger Flummerfelt and Tommy Flummerfelt, both of Ulysses; one daughter, Mary Jo Zerr, Ulysses; one brother, Charles Robert "Bob" Lyle, Sacramento, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Ginny Flummerfelt, Heather Zerr, Megan Zerr and Erica Flummerfelt.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Roberta Lynn Flummerfelt on Nov. 25, 1969; and one brother, Harry William "Bill" Lyle.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses with Dr. Max Clayton presiding.

Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.

The family suggests memorials to Grant County Museum, American Heart Association, American Lung Association or to the donor's choice, all in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

LILLIE F. HESTON

Lillie F. Heston, 77, Liberal, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

Funeral services are pending and will be announced by Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

PAULENE BROWN

Paulene Brown, 87, Liberal, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

She was born May 29, 1914, to Haskell and May (Randolph) Bray in Sparta, Tenn.

She married William Dorman Grider in 1933. He died in May, 1960.

She married Reece Brown Nov. 26, 1965, in Liberal. He survives.

She assumed the responsibility of raising her siblings at the age of 11, after her mother died.

She had been a longtime Liberal resident.

She was a homemaker and assisted her daughter with her floral shop. She also worked with her husband on the farm.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Evergreen Garden Club, 300 Club, Pancake Campers Club and a former member and past president of the BPW, all of Liberal.

Other survivors include one son, James Dorman Grider and wife, Felicia Sue, Houston; one daughter, Ann Johnson and husband, Kenneth, Liberal; three sisters, Gladys Curtis, Cookeville, Tenn., Lorell Bell, Richmond, Ind., and Jean Officer, Sparta; four grandchildren, Karla Holder, David Johnson, Douglas Grider and Curtis Grider; and nine great-grandchildren, Kenton Holder, Kevin Holder, Dustin Johnson, Preston Johnson, Chris Grider, Mike Grider, Sage Grider, Mathew Grider and Jeremy Grider.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Esker Bray and L.V. Bray.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Liberal with the Rev. Philip Shull presiding.

Burial will be at the Liberal Cemetery in Liberal.

Friends may call until 9 p.m. today and from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

Memorials are suggested to Crossroads Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 W. Second St., Liberal, KS 67901.
