FRANCES L. ONIONS

Frances L. Onions, 70, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

She was born July 5, 1930, to Charles and Mabel Long in Mather, Pa.

She married Leon Onions April 1, 1977, in Washington, Pa. He survives.

She attended and graduated high school in Waynesburg, Pa.

She had been a Liberal resident since 1957.

She had been employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone for 22 years and retired in 1979.

She was a member of the telephone Pioneers of America and was an officer for the Southwest Kansas division. She helped with community service activities for the organization.

She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Liberal, where she assisted the activities of the Deacons, MAPPS (Mature Adult Presbyterian Partners and Singles) and the church administration.

She was also a member of the First Prestige Club of the First National Bank in Liberal.

She camped with members of the Liberal Pancake Campers and was an associate member of the Elkhart Point Rockers.

Her hobbies included traveling, gardening and her flowers.

Other survivors include two sisters, Ida Mae Headrick, Broken Bow, Neb., and Judy Kwosnoski, Harrisburg, Pa.; two brothers-in-law, Bill Onions and wife, Ruth, Liberal, and Don Kauffman, Cheyenne, Wyo.; one sister-in-law, Vesta Jean Brennan and husband, John, Denver; one nephew, Marvin Headrick and wife, Jetta, Turpin, Okla.; three nieces, Jerra Kirchner and husband, Gary, and Sue Barnard, all of Cheyenne, and Lee Ann Fenske and husband, Tim, Clancy, Mont.; and several other cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Donna Onions Kauffman.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Liberal with the Rev. Stephen Saville presiding.

Burial will follow at the Liberal Cemetery in Liberal.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the First Presbyterian Church or to Cal Farley's Boys Ranch in Amarillo, Texas, both in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 W. Second St., Liberal, KS 67901.

CLYDE C. SMITH

DODGE CITY -- Clyde C. Smith, 89, Cimarron, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Trinity Manor Nursing Home in Dodge City where he had been a resident.

He was born April 22, 1912, to Frank Edner and Effie D. (Blackburn) Smith in Stafford County.

He married Esther V. Goodale Dec. 25, 1938, in Coldwater. She survives.

He was manager of the Kroger Grocery Store in Newton, which is where he met his wife, Esther.

He was a farmer and a stockman. He had farmed and fed cattle in Finney County near Kalvesta since 1940. He pioneered pivot sprinkler irrigation in Gray County near Cimarron in 1967. During his retirement years he farmed and worked with cattle in Detroit, Texas.

He had attended the World Wide Church of God where he had been a member since 1952.

Other survivors include two sons, Thomas A. Smith and wife, Pam, Ingalls, and John P. Smith and wife, Mary, Cimarron; four daughters, Peggy Toland, Mary Hoskinson and husband, Charles, and Nancy Davis, all of Cimarron, and Helen Shriver and husband, Roger, Mountainburg, Ark.; three brothers, Ralph W. Smith and wife, Leila, Kalvesta, Stanton F. Smith and wife, Beva, and Laverne E. Smith and wife, Margie, all of Kingsland, Texas; and 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, James C. Smith, Cecil B. Smith, Glenn T. Smith, Edner B. Smith, John B. Smith and Paul O. Smith; two sisters, Mildred Hopkins and Lula Hanson.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Nazarene in Cimarron, with the Rev. James Bond presiding. Burial will follow at the Cimarron Cemetery in Cimarron.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at the Montezuma Funeral Home, or from 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the Church of the Nazarene.

A memorial has been established for either the Trinity Manor Adult Care Center in Dodge City, or the Shepherd Center in Cimarron, in care of the Montezuma Funeral Home, P.O. Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67887.

JOHN WARREN HOUGH

RIFLE, Colo. -- John Warren Hough, 93, former Liberal resident, died Tuesday, June 12,

2001, in Glenwood Springs, Colo.

He was born May 28, 1908 in Hereford, Texas.

Survivors include one daughter, Lynne Duggan, Abilene, Texas; two sons, Frank Hough, Austin, Colo., and Wesley Hough, Belen, N.M.; two brothers, Charles Hough, Denver, Colo., and Raleigh Hough, Fort Morgan, Colo.; one sister, Mary Reneau, Dallas, Texas; and five grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Stephens; his parents, one brother, and one sister.

Services were Friday, June 15, 2001, in Rifle, Colo.

Burial took place at the Rosehill Cemetery in Rifle.

CHASTIN DEE PETERSON

HUGOTON -- Chastin Dee Peterson, 19, Hugoton, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, following injuries he received in a motor vehicle accident.

He was born July 8, 1981, to Steven and Tammie (Crane) Peterson in Hugoton.

He was a lifetime resident of Hugoton.

He worked for Paramount Trucking Service.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Hugoton.

His hobbies included 4-wheeling, working on 4-wheelers and trucks, camping, jet skiing and fishing.

Survivors include his parents of Hugoton; one son, Wyatt Lane and girlfriend, Amanda Lay, both of Stinnett, Texas; two brothers, Bryce Peterson, Garden City, and Ty Peterson, Hugoton; one sister, Tanae Cox, Hugoton; his grandparents, Mary Lou Peterson, Karolyn Crane and Don and Beverly Crane, all of Hugoton; great-grandparents, Paul and Mary Slocum and Gracie Crane, all of Hugoton; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Bill Peterson and Walter Crane; great-grandfathers, Kester and Ruth Gentzler; and one aunt, Jeanetta Crane.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church in Hugoton, with Pastor Gary Stafford presiding.

Burial will follow at the Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today, or from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Hugoton.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to a scholarship fund for his son, Wyatt Lane, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 423 S. Main, Hugoton, KS 67951.

GERALD E. BURNS

BACLIFF, Texas -- Gerald E. Burns, 67, a former Liberal resident, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at his home in Bacliff.

He was born Nov. 22, 1933, to Carman and Evelyn Burns in Liberal.

He worked as a telephone installer.

Survivors include his wife, Luana J. Burns of the home; two sons, Gary Burns, Bamberg, S.C., and Alan Burns, Keller, Texas; one daughter, Pamela Lanham, Weatherford, Texas; one brother, Terry Burns, Sioux City, Iowa; and his mother of Sioux City.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Fort Worth, Texas.

Burial will follow at the cemetery.

Mount Olivet Funeral Home in Fort Worth is in charge of arrangements.

MARY RUTH COFFMAN

MODESTO, Calif. -- Mary Ruth Coffman, 89, a former Liberal

resident, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at English Oaks Convalescent Hospital in Modesto.

She was born April 1, 1912.

She had been a resident of Modesto since 1945.

She worked for John Inglis Frozen Foods in Modesto for 25 years. She was a member of the Teamster Local No. 748.

She was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include five daughters, Clarinda Mae Logsdon, Oakdale, Calif., Mary Lee Souza, Modesto, Helen Louise Tuggl, O'Fallon, Ill., Alma Lue Gerhardt, Rio Linda, Calif., and Donna Bell Shannon, Macomb, Mo.; two sisters, Marguerite Goss, Liberal, and Bertha Driver, Modesto; 17 grandchildren and 52 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel in Modesto.

Burial will follow at Acacia Memorial Park in Modesto.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

GARY L. OCHS

ULYSSES -- Gary Lynn Ochs, 45, Moriarty, N.M., former longtime Ulysses resident, died Monday, June 18, 2001, while on a well drilling job in Edgewood, N.M.

He was born Jan. 31, 1956, to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ochs in Lakin.

He worked on irrigation wells and home wells in the Ulysses area until 1999, when he moved to Moriarty.

He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Ulysses. After moving to Moriarty, he became a member of the First Baptist Church.

His hobbies included watching football, fishing and being outdoors.

Survivors include one daughter, Gara Lee and husband, Justin, Lecoma, Mo.; one brother, Rick Lee ad wife, Sylvia, Hobbs, N.M.; two sisters, Tina Rule, Clay Center, and Rachael Ochs; and three grandchildren, Rhett, Quintin and Colby Lee.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Grace Lutheran Church in Ulysses with Pastor Dennis Mason presiding.

Burial will be at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Grant County Funeral Home in Ulysses and from 10:30 a.m. until service time at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the family in care of Grant County Funeral Home, 218 S. Main, Ulysses, KS 67880.
