Barbara Ann Scarborough, 84, formerly of Lawrence, KS, passed away, Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the Atchison Senior Village.

Funeral services will be 2:30 PM Saturday, May 2, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery, 10507 Holmes Rd., Kansas City, MO 64131. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 PM Saturday at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS. Memorials in honor of Mrs. Scarborough are suggested to the Atchison Hospital Hospice and may be left in care of the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at www.beckerdyer.com.

Barbara was born June 30, 1924 in Detroit, MI the daughter of the late William G. and Cleo (Grady) Wilson. She graduated from Central High School in Detroit. Barbara was a homemaker who enjoyed tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, boating, fishing, gourmet cooking, baking, knitting and sewing and spending time with her grandchildren. She was very active with the Humane Society and loved caring for neglected animals.

Barbara married Charles Scarborough December 17, 1955 in Excelsior Springs, MO, he survives in Atchison. Additional survivors include 3 sons; Bill and Joyce Andes, Atchison, KS, Chuck and Ellen Scarborough, Stamford, CT, Jeff and Alice Scarborough, Conifer, CO and one daughter; Billie Jean (Andes) and Bob Bogardus, Bartlesville, OK, 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter and a sister.

Dorothy Jean (Sanger) Madden, 64, of Cummings, KS, passed away Sunday, April 26, 2009 at her home with her husband by her side.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, April 30, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Nortonville, KS with Fr. John Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Ann’s Cemetery, Effingham, KS. A parish rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 8:30 PM. Memorial contributions in honor of Mrs. Madden are suggested to St. Joseph’s Church or St. Ann’s Church and may be left in care of the funeral home. Dorothy was born May 9, 1944 in St. Joseph, MO the daughter of Andrew and Gertrude (Borkoswski) Sanger, Sr. She graduated from Bishop LeBlond High School and then went to the Hannibal School of Nursing. Dorothy was a Licensed Practical Nurse and retired from the Dwight D. Eisenhower VA Medical Center and later worked for Dr. Dina Siebert and then the Jefferson County Hospital and Geriatric Center. She enjoyed spending time with her family and was an avid bird watcher. One of Dorothy’s greatest pleasures was being a nurse.

Dorothy married John Madden on July 8, 1967 in St. Joseph, MO at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, he survives of the home additional survivors include a son; Paul Madden, Topeka, KS, a daughter; Christina Madden, St. George, KS, four brothers; Andy, Robert, Jacob and Jim Sanger, all of St. Joseph, MO, and two sisters; Trudy Lohman, Cummings, KS and Joan Lowe, Colorado Springs, CO and several nieces and nephews.

Ruby Marie Gerardy, 95, of Atchison, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2009 at the Golden Peaks Nursing Home, Ft. Collins, CO.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Friday, May 1, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00-8:00 PM on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials in honor of Mrs. Gerardy are suggested to the United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer’s Association and may be left in care of the funeral home. Ruby was born August 22, 1913 in Pontiac, KS the daughter of John and Minnie (Schaffer) Olson. She married John Gerardy on June 30, 1934 in El Dorado, KS and later they moved to Atchison. Ruby was a homemaker who belonged to the Doll Club, Valley Quilt Guild, and NE Kansas Quilt Guild in Nortonville, KS.

She is survived by a daughter, Pat Finnerty, Ft. Collins, CO; 3 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Ruby’s parents, husband and son; John Gerardy, Jr., preceded her in death.

Helen M. Stehwien, 85 years of age, of Rushville, formerly of Bean Lake and Atchison, KS died Saturday, April 18, 2009 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 21st, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Keith Hoover, Pastor of the Sugar Creek Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow services at the Armstrong Cemetery, Rushville, MO, The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday, April 20th, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Sugar Creek Christian Church, Atchison, KS.

Helen was born on March 24, 1924 in Rushville, MO the daughter of Van D. and Lettie May (Blakley) Justus. Helen attended Rushville schools, worked at the Wilson Poultry, Atchison and then for 40 years at the Atchison Leather Products. She retired in 1986. She was a former member of the First Christian Church, Atchison, KS and enjoyed word puzzles, television, reading mysteries, and handiwork.

She was married to John Stehwien on Oct. 9, 1943. Mr. Stehwien preceded her in death in June 1992. Survivors include a brother, Johnny Justus, St. Joseph, MO, a sister, Beverly Williams, St. Joseph, MO, and nieces and nephews. Her parents, three brothers, Earl, Earnest, and Everet Justus,a sister, Alice Schrader preceded her in death.

Cecil O. Gripe, 74 years of age, of Atchison, KS, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at the Atchison Senior Village.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 18th, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, 800 Kansas Ave., Atchison, KS. with Rev. Stephen Lucas, Pastor of the Faith Bible Fellowship Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Round Mound Cemetery, Atchison. The family will receive friend from 1:00 to 2:00 PM on Saturday at the funeral home. Cecil was born on Feb. 27, 1935 in Stark City, MO, the son of Chester O. and Goldie D. (Marion) Gripe. Mr. Gripe had served in the US Army Reserves following high school. He worked as a clerk and mail carrier for the U.S. Postal service, at the Hudson Oil Company Winthrop, Mo. and as an insurance agent for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for 22 years. From 1989 to 2005, Mr. Grip started, owned and operated five Subway Restaurants in Kirksville, MO, Mexico, MO, Moberly, MO, in Hiawatha and Atchison, KS. He was a Deacon and member of the Faith Bible Fellowship Church. He sang in the Church Choir, and several quartets. He taught Sunday school and enjoyed music, golfing, reading, and fishing.

He was married to Mary Ann Barber on June 6, 1954 at the Carol Baptist Church, Atchison, KS. Mrs. Gripe survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son; Chris A.(Kelley) Gripe, Shawnee, KS, three daughters; Cecilia (Doug) Wieberg, St. Louis, MO, Cindy (Steve) Graves, St. Joseph, MO, and Staci (Dennis) Mix, Amity, MO, a brother, Larry Gripe, Tx, a sister; Beverly Lewis, Kimberling City, MO, and nine grandchildren; Chad, Steffany, Craig, and Sydney Graves, St. Joseph, MO, Jordan and Mackenzie Gripe, Shawnee, KS, Lauren Wieberg, St. Louis, MO, and Hunter and Christopher Mix, Amity, MO, His parents and one sister preceded him in death.

Benjamin F. Green, 78, Redding, CA, formerly of Atchison, passed away peacefully April 10, 2009 at the Northern California Rehabilitation Center.

A visitation will be held in Atchison, Kansas on Friday, April 17 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Interment will be at 12:30 PM in the Leavenworth National Cemetery. A memorial service was held in California at the Bonneview Boat Ramp in Redding by fishing friends and neighbors. Contributions may be left at the funeral home for the Kidney Foundation or the Kansas Fish & Game Commission. Online condolences may be left at www.beckerdyer.com.

Ben, son of Charles and Clara (Walker) Green, was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on December 22, 1930. He was employed at a locomotive foundry in Atchison until going into the United States Army from 1953 to 1954 during the Korean War. He and Helen Jean Myers were married on July 5, 1958 in Atchison and moved to California from Atchison in 1960. He was employed at the University of California, Berkeley from 1961 to 1991 as a machine maintenance supervisor. Ben was an avid fisherman and especially liked to fish on the Sacramento River. He had many friends in the area, taught several classes on fishing and was known for the fishing rods he created and his fishing techniques. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and California Seniors in Retirement.

Surviving are his wife, Helen, Redding, CA; daughter, Katherine Martinez and grandson Zackary, Tracy; son Randall, Atchison. Four brothers, Gene (Sandy), Bill (Jerline), Andy (Sherry), and Jim Green, Atchison.

Deceased family members are his mother and father; two brothers, Charles and Adolph Green.

Joy Elaine Crossland, 50 years of age, of Atchison, KS died on Tuesday, April 07, 2009 at her home following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, April 10, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Chaplain Jack Albright officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens, Atchison, KS. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM on Thursday, April 9, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Achievement Services of Atchison and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com.

Joy was born on August 31st, 1958 in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of Leslie and Joyce (Vessar) Crossland. She attended special education classes and then worked for Achievement Services of Atchison in their folding gloves assembly line. She formerly attended the Calvary Baptist Church, and enjoyed collecting and wearing head bands. Joy also enjoyed music, television soap operas, word search puzzles and jig saw puzzles, stuffed animals and her favorite color was yellow. She especially loved her nieces and nephews.

Survivors include her parents, Leslie and Joyce Crossland, a sister, Carrie L. Kautz, Burleson, TX, two brothers; Rick Crossland, Bendena, KS., and Rory Crossland, Atchison, KS, four nieces; Christy Kautz, Brittany Crossland, Felicity Crossland, and Desirae Crossland, and three nephews; Josh Kautz, Terry Crossland, and Skylar Crossland and two step nephews; Christopher and Jordan Tull. She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents.
