WILLIAM H. PROCTOR

BRACKETVILLE, Texas -- William H. "Bill" Proctor, 79, Bracketville, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001,

He was born Aug. 4, 1922, to William J. and Lady Lorene Proctor in Meade.

He married Helen M. Murry in 1947. She died in 1982.

He then married Cora Kielhorn in 1984. She survives.

He graduated from Forgan, Okla., High School in 1940.

He was a World War II Marine Veteran and a Pearl Harbor survivor.

He was a member of the VFW, Pearl Harbor Survivor Organization, Masonic Lodge and The Order of Eastern Star.

He retired from the Liberal Gas Company in 1985 after 27 years.

Other survivors include one son, William Jay Proctor and wife, Billie; one daughter, Gay Lyn Lillagore and husband, Ken; one step-son, Wallee Kielhorn; three step-daughters, Glorie Martell and husband, Lynn, Patti Stoeser and husband, Rod, and Billie Jean Angell and husband, Layne; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris and Mildred.

Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. today at the Methodist Church in Bracketville.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Restlawn Cemetery in Liberal with the Rev. Phil Shull presiding.

Time for visiting with family and friends will follow at the First United Methodist Church in Liberal.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to either The Salvation Army or American Cancer Society, both in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 W. Second Street, Liberal, KS 67901.

VADA V. LAIRD

ULYSSES -- Vada V. Laird, 88, Ulysses, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital in Ulysses.

She was born Nov. 15, 1912, to Frank Ernest and Julia Hannah (Davis) Vick in Haviland.

She married Joe W. Laird June 3, 1935, in Meade. He survives.

She moved from Liberal to Ulysses on Oct. 24, 1949.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses.

She was a former member of the HDU and Civic and Study Club, all of Ulysses.

Other survivors include four daughters, Roberta Garrett and husband, C.L., Liberal, Betty Jo Reeves and husband, Bob, Loveland, Colo., Sue Patten and husband, Joe, Midland, Texas, and Jane Hewson and husband, Paul, Garden City; one sister, Alma Ruth Myer, Woodburn, Ore.; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, John W. Laird in May of 1961; and four sisters, Rosie, Helen, Sylvia and Frankie.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses with Dr. Max Clayton presiding.

Burial will be at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Grant County Funeral Home in Ulysses.

Memorials are suggested to Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses in care of Grant County Funeral Home, 218 S. Main, Ulysses, KS 67880.

VERNA L. SKENE

NEWTON -- Verna N. Skene, 87, Newton, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at Newton Medical Center in Newton.

She was born Nov. 14, 1913, to John Edwin and Minnie M. (Howard) Anderson in Norwood, Mo.

She married Ben Skene Sept. 13, 1934, in Newton. He survives.

She graduated from Newton High school in 1932.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Newton, where she taught vacation Bible school for 20 years. She was the former Sunday school superintendent for the primary department at the church.

She was also the superintendent of the Newton weekday Bible school in Newton for 20 years.

She was named Woman of the Year in 1963.

Other survivors include two daughters, Pam Orth, Kismet, and Pat Voll, Salina; one sister, Beulah Bugher, Las Vegas; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, two sisters, and one grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Bruce Anthony presiding.

Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.

Friends may call until 9 p.m. today at Petersen Funeral Home

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice in care of Petersen Funeral Home, 215 N. Main, Newton, KS 67114.

WILSON SCOTT

ROCHELLE, Ill. -- Wilson "Bill" Scott, 88, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, in Plano, Texas.

He was born Dec. 13, 1912, to George and E. Mary (Payne) Scott.

He grew up in Seward County and graduated from Liberal High School.

He was a veteran of World War II.

He owned Scott's Wyman Street Bakery in Rockford, Ill., for 20 years. He was a health inspector for Winnebago County for 10 years.

After retirement, he spent 20 years at Sunland Village in Mesa, Ariz.

He had been a resident of Plano at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Marie Scott; one son, Terry Scott and wife, Jenny, Plano; one daughter, Connie Pruitt, Tampa, Fla.; one sister, Martha Gillis and husband, Don; one sister-in-law, Daisy Scott; five grandchildren, Colleen Pruitt, Rhonda Shorter and husband, Chris, Andrea Mason and husband, Scott, Brady Scott and Tiffany Scott; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon Shorter and Matthew Mason.

He was preceded in death by two sons, George Edward Scott and John Raymond Scott, and six brothers and sisters.

Memorial services were at 2 p.m. Sunday at Unger Funeral Home in Rochelle.

Burial was at Lawnridge Memorial Park in Rochelle.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, 1615 Stemmons Frwy., Dallas, TX 75207.

JOHN C. DORMAN

AMARILLO, Texas -- John C. Dorman, 64, former Floris, Okla., resident, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at his home in Amarillo.

He was born Jan. 6, 1937, to Hugh and Virginia (Grimwood) Dorman in Beaver, Okla.

He grew up in the Floris community.

He graduated from Turpin, Okla., High School in 1955. He attended Oklahoma University in Norman, Okla., and Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Okla.

He married Wilma L. Jennings Oct. 17, 1960, in Clayton, N.M. She survives.

He served in the United States Marine Corps. He returned to the Floris community after being discharged from the service.

He farmed in the Floris community until his retirement in 1992.

He was a member of the Bethel Church of God in Floris.

He was a member of the DeMolay, and the National Rifle Association. He was a former member of the Democratic Party in Beaver County.

Survivors also include two sons, John Mark Dorman and wife, Bonne, Las Vegas, Nev., and Bill Dorman, Forgan, Okla.; two brothers, Richard Dorman and wife, Neva, Forgan, and Butch Kneeland and wife, Pat, Turpin, Okla.; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Charles and James Dorman, Zachary and La Ne Domstead, all of Liberal; three brother-in-laws, Leroy Jennings, Liberal, Bobby Jennings, Kenwood, Okla., and Luther Jennings Jr., Jay, Okla.; five sister-in-laws, Mary Jennings, Salina, Okla., Shirley Allaman, Montgomery, Texas, Sharlyn Hahn, Lone Grove, Okla., Lilly Kite, Pryor, Okla., and Linda Jennings, Jay; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father- and mother-in-law, Luther and Doni Jennings; and by one brother-in-law, John B. Jennings.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Miller Mortuary Chapel in Liberal, with the Rev. Stanley Lehnert presiding.

Burial will be at the Floris Cemetery.

Friends may call from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, and from 8 a.m. until service time Wednesday at Miller Mortuary.

KATHRYN R. SELLS

TOPEKA -- Kathryn Ruth "Kay" Bozarth Sells, 83, Topeka, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.

She was born Jan. 16, 1918, to Andrew J. and Georgia (Stricklin) Bozarth on a farm near Liberal.

She married Howard Edward Sells in 1942. He died in 1992.

She grew up in the Liberal community and graduated from Liberal High School. She attended Kansas University.

She briefly lived in Kansas City, Mo., and Joplin, Mo. She lived in Prairie Village most of her life and moved to Topeka in 1997.

She had been an accountant for Campbell Paint Co. in Kansas City, Kan., and for Raymond Jenkins in Kansas City, Mo.

She operated Kay Sells Accounting in Kansas City, Mo., for many years.

She was a member of Colonial United Church of Christ in Prairie Village.

Survivors include one son, Stephen Sells and wife, Laurie, Menlo Park, Calif.; one daughter, Karen Sells Brown, Topeka; one sister, Eleanor Lucile Fuller, Wichita; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Bozarth,

Liberal; and three grandsons, Andrew, Tobias and Galen Brown.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Jack Bozarth; three sisters, Helen Bozarth, Mildred Davis and Mary Miller; and one grandson, Joseph Benjamin Brown.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the First United Methodist Church in Liberal with the Rev. Phil Schull presiding.

She willed her body to KU Medical Center.
