ABRAM W. PENNER
GREENSBURG -- Abram W. Penner, 67, Greensburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Via Christi RMC, St. Francis Campus, in Wichita.
He was born June 20, 1934, to Abram Sr. and Katharina (Wall) Penner in Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua, Mexico.
He married Nancy Neufeld June 13, 1953, in Mexico. She survives.
He and his wife moved from Coldwater to Greensburg in 1994.
He was a mechanic and also farmed.
He was a member of the Reinlaender Mennonite Church in Sublette.
Other survivors include three sons, Abe N. Penner and wife, Justina, Mexico, and Jake N. Penner and wife, Teresa, and Herman N. Penner and wife, Tammy, all of Garden City; three daughters, Helena Harms, Garden City, Maria Giesbrecht and husband, Abe, Manitoba, Canada, and Annie Peters and husband, Henry, Mexico; one brother, Pete Penner, Mexico; two sisters, Tina Dyck and Aganetta Neufeld, both of Canada; 22 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Pete N. Penner and Johnny N. Penner; two daughters, Nancy N. Penner and Tina N. Penner; one sister, Susan Enns; two grandchildren, Nancy D. Penner and Helena D. Penner.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Reinlaender Mennonite Church in Sublette with the Pastor Henry Reimer presiding.
Burial will be at Haskell County Cemetery
in Sublette.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Haskell County Funeral Home in Sublette.

LAURIE C. HAMPTON
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Laurie Carlene Hampton, 55, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo.
She was born Nov. 1, 1956, to
Russel and Dorothy Johnson in Long Beach, Calif.
She received her primary and secondary education in Liberal and graduated from Liberal High School in 1975.
She lived in Organe, Calif., for two years, and recently moved to Kansas City, Mo., in October 2000.
She was employed at Sprint Inc. and worked at the conferencing center in Lenexa.
She had also served the developmentally disabled as a residential service specialist and the elderly as an activities director in nursing homes.
She was a member of God's Girls, a ministry located in Anaheim, Calif., for 12 years.
Survivors include her parents, of Liberal; and five sisters, Judie Andersen, Agoura Hills, Calif., Dorothy Lucey, Long Beach, Pamela Johnathan, Organe, and Cindy Baugh and Karen Johnson, both of Kansas City, Mo.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Newcomer's Noland Chapel in Independence.
Burial will be at Walnut Cemetery
in Walnut, Ill.
Friends may call from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at Newcomer's Noland Road Chapel.

JERRY KELLY
TUCUMCARI, N.M. -- Jerry Kelly, 73, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at his home in Logan, N.M.
He was born Aug. 9, 1928, in Wichita.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his wife, Pat Kelly, Logan; four sons, Michael Kelly, Tyrone, Okla., Greg Kelly, Logan, Jeff Kelly, Wichita, and Chris Kelly, Santa Fe, N.M.; two daughters, Shawna England, Wichita, and Michelle Roybal, Santa Fe; one sister, Betty Danesburg, Shelton, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Logan Cemetery
in Logan, N.M. The American Legion Post will conduct graveside funeral services.
Military rites will be provided by the Cannon Air Force Base Honor Guard from Clovis, N.M.
ETHEL M. PHILLIPS
Ethel M. Phillips passed away Dec. 9, 2001, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kansas.
Ethel recently celebrated her 100th birthday with her children, grandchildren, great and great-great-grandchildren and friends.
Ethel was born Sept. 28, 1901, in Tow, Texas, to Charles G. and Lucy T. (McMichael) Cowan. On Dec. 5, 1918, she married Lex W. Phillips. She resided in Liberal since 1948. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband -- Lex, two sons -- Alvin and Eldon, four sisters -- Mildred, Cora Lee, Mabel, and Viola, five brothers -- Evan, Bill, Alford, Hubert, Kellus, one daughter-in-law -- Bess Phillips, three sons-in-law -- Ivan Dettmer, Rex Logsdon, and Coy Brown, and one great-great-granddaughter -- Olivia Leigh Peerson.
She is survived by two daughters -- Ladena Dettmer of Liberal and Jean Brown of Oklahoma City; two sisters -- Aileen Miller of Breckinridge, Texas, and Lois Granger of Amarillo, Texas; one brother -- Randale Cowan of Fritch, Texas; six grandchildren -- Dee Phillips Pederson, Austin, Texas, Karen Logsdon Britton, Oklahoma City, Clay Phillips, Plains, Brad Phillips, Temple, Texas, Gail Dettmer Hufferd, Stockton, Mo., Janet Logsdon Kilgore, Liberal; 13 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Ethel was known as "Granny" by all who knew her. She welcomed all to her home and dedicated her life to caring for her home, her family, and her friends.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home Chapel, Liberal, with Rev. Steve Saville presiding. Burial will follow at Liberal Cemetery.
Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the funeral home.

HUGOTON -- Vic Turner, 78, Hugoton, formerly of Liberal, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.

HUGOTON -- Bobbie Knox, 61, Hugoton, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

NEW YORK CITY -- Leroy Calvert, 63, formerly of Liberal, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Newton Memorial Hospital in Newton, N.J.

BETTY J. CHAVEZ
Betty Joan Chavez, 53, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
She was born Nov. 13, 1948, to Joseph and Emma (Pauley) Nuzum in Omaha, Neb.
She married Jose L. Chavez Jan. 6, 1989, in Liberal. He survives.
She was a former Seward County correctional officer.
Other survivors include one son, Manuel Erives, Liberal; six daughters, Teresa Riechart, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Veronica Estrada, Dupont, Colo., Yolanda Castillo, Rosario Estrada and Ramona Diaz, all of Liberal, and Jessica Borunda, Dodge City; three brothers, Charles Tippery, Donald Tippery and Marvin Tippery, all of Council Bluffs; three sisters, Judy Money, Omaha, Trish Fink, Council Bluffs, and Bonnie McKee, Lakewood, Colo.; and 15 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother and one son, Marvin Penry Jr.
Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Liberal with the Father Patrick Keyes presiding.
Cremation has already taken place.
Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal is in charge of arrangements.
MARGARET DUNCAN
GREAT BEND -- Margaret "Ruthe" Duncan, 81, Great Bend, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Via Christi-St. Francis in Wichita.
She was born Aug. 18, 1920, to William Edward and Mabelle Nora (Cole) Robbins in Liberal.
She married Vaughn A Duncan Dec. 27, 1948, in Garfield. He survives.
She was a retired school teacher, having taught at LaCrosse, Garfield and Pratt. She also taught at Roosevelt Junior High in Great Bend until retiring in 1982.
She had lived in Great Bend since 1968, having moved from Pratt.
She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church and Cosmopolitan Study Club, both in Great Bend. She was also a member of the Barton County Teacher's Association, the Barton County Historical Society, KNEA and the Kansas Retired Teacher's Association.
She was a member and former treasurer of the Garfield American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 300.
Other survivors include three sons, Von Steward Duncan, Hudson, Stephen Ray Duncan, Great Bend,
and David Brent Duncan, Wichita; three sisters, Helen Winifred Baier, Seward, Alice Lucille "Lucy" Templer, Leoti, and Wilma Lenore "Billie" Beck, Mahomet, Ill.; and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Cole Robbins; one sister, Marian Frances Robbins; and one grandson, Brandon Nash Duncan.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Great Bend with the Rev. Jana Baxter presiding.
Burial will be at Larned Cemetery
in Larned.
Friends may call until 9 p.m. today at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend and from 9 a.m. until service time at the church.
