LINZLE C. HENRY

Linzle Charles Henry, 68, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Liberal Good Samaritan Center in Liberal.

He was born Sept. 14, 1933, to Lee and Rena (Hill) Henry in Zoe, Okla.

He had been a resident of Liberal for the past several years.

Survivors include one son, Billy Henry, Dewey, Okla.; two brothers, Clarence Henry, Taleno, Okla., and Glen O. Henry, Long Pine, Calif.; and one sister, Jewell Juliano, Bartlesville, Okla.

Cremation has already taken place. No services are planned.

Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal is in charge of arrangements.

GEORGE M. NICHOLS

ULYSSES -- George Marvin Nichols, 58, Ulysses, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.

He was born June 22, 1943, to George Obert and Mildred Marie (Dalgarn) Nichols on the Nichols farm in Gray County.

He attended school in Fowler and graduated in 1960.

He was a farmer and had received numerous conservation awards.

He lived and worked on the farm until 1980, when he moved to Dodge City, Jetmore and then to Ulysses, where he was a resident at Western Prairie Care Home.

His hobbies including sail boating.

Survivors include one brother, Wilbert O. Nichols, Ulysses; one sister, Ruth Edmonds, Mullinville; one sister-in-law, Joyce Nichols, Minneola; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Kenneth Nichols, Gerald Nichols and Elvin Nichols; and one sister, Lela Nichols.

Graveside memorial services and burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Fowler Cemetery in Fowler.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to either Western Prairie Care Home or Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

OMA J. LAPPIN

HUGOTON -- Oma Jane Lappin, 98, Hugoton, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.

She was born Feb. 9, 1903, to August and Celia Friend in Licking, Mo.

She married James Preston Hamblin in 1923 in Houston, Mo. He died in October 1948.

She married George Lappin in October 1957 in Clayton, N.M. He died in July 1964.

She moved from Jetmore to Hugoton in 1935, and in 1957 moved to Larned. She then moved back to Hugoton in the early 1990s.

She was a homemaker and cooked in restaurants.

She was a member of the Baptist church in Missouri.

Survivors include two sons, Russell Hamblin and wife, Marjorie, Hugoton, and James A. Hamblin, Laverne, Okla.; one daughter, Evelyn Florence Hauf, Hugoton; two sisters, Minnie Renick, Licking, and Mandy Venable, Houston, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; two sons, James Leland Hamblin and Everett Dean Hamblin; four brothers, John Friend, Henry Friend, Charlie Friend and Sherman Friend; one sister, Goldie Friend; and three grandsons, Rodney Hamblin, Larry Horn and Michael Hamblin.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton with the Minister Gaylon Cox presiding.

Burial will be at 4 p.m. at the Fairmont Cemetery in Jetmore.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Paul's Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice in care of Paul's Funeral Home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

MANUEL GARCIA

COPELAND -- Manuel Garcia, 88, formerly of Copeland, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc. in Montezuma.

He was born May 21, 1913, to Cruz and Cayethana (Olivas) Garcia in Chihuahua, Mexico.

He married Guadelupe Marquez June 9, 1945, in Col. Albaro Obregon, Chihuahua. She survives.

He had been a resident of Bethel Home Inc. since Aug. 18, 1998.

He was a rancher and cowboy and retired in 1991.

Other survivors include five sons, Jesus Garcia, Spearman, Texas, Mario Garcia, Chihuahua, Cruz Garcia, Columbus, N.M., Guadalupe Garcia, El Mirage, Ariz., and Miguel Garcia, Eden, Texas; four daughters, Consepcion Garcia and Diva Withers, both of Copeland, Cayetana Antillon, Albuquerque, N.M., and Lourdes Mendoza, Los Lunas, N.M.; one brother, Cruz Garcia, Chihuahua; 36 grandchildren; and 47 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Juan Ramon Garcia; one brother, Encarnacion Garcia; one sister, Librada Garcia; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Salem Mennonite Church in Copeland with the Ministers Sam Unruh Jr., Steve Unruh and Verle Yost presiding.

Burial will be at Salem Church Cemetery in Copeland.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Montezuma Funeral Home in Montezuma.

Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc. in care of Montezuma Funeral Home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

RODNEY L. HAZELTON

WICHITA -- Rodney Lee Hazelton Sr., 50, Wichita, formerly of Liberal, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, in Wichita.

He was born Feb. 8, 1951, to Jeff and Jewell (Jones) Hazelton in Dodge City.

He married Zina Anderson Aug. 22, 1975, in Perryton. She survives.

He attended school in Liberal and Tyrone, Okla.

He worked at various companies in Liberal, the last as a batchman for Carlile Redi-Mix for six years before becoming disabled.

He moved to Wichita in 1997.

Other survivors include three sons, Rodney Hazelton Jr., Omaha, Neb., Freedom Hazelton, El Dorado, and Liberty Hazelton, Wichita; one daughter, Shannon Gearhart, Brandon, Fla.; his parents, Liberal; two sisters, Beckie Naab, Liberal, and Jeanie Long, Bella Vista, Ark.; and seven grandchildren, Alexa and Hailey Hazelton, Dominique and Anthony Hazelton, Austin Hazelton and Cody and Caitlyn Gearhart.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Hazelton; two nephews, T.J. Long and Gordon Monroe; and one niece, Sarah Long.

Following funeral services in Wichita, additional services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the South Church of God in Liberal with the Rev. David Parker presiding.

Burial will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Liberal.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice Inc. of Wichita in care of Miller Mortuary, 908 N. Lincoln, Liberal, KS 67901.

CHARLES F. SALLEE

JACKSON, Calif. -- Charles Francis Sallee, 68, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Sutter Amador Hospital in Jackson.

He was born March 25, 1933, in Forgan, Okla.

He graduated from Stratton High School in Stratton, Colo.

He moved to Stockton, Calif., in 1955 with the U.S. Army. He worked at Sharp Army Depot for 32 years.

He was a member of the American Legion in Stockton and Central Church of Christ in Jackson.

He built his house in Buckhorn, Calif.

His hobbies included being outdoors, especially camping and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Joyce Sallee, Buckhorn; two sons, Roger Sallee, Buckhorn, and Timothy Sallee, Stockton; three daughters, Deborah Snider, Wallace, Calif., Cynthia Clark, Sonora, Calif., and Barbie Sallee, Buckhorn; four brothers, Ted Sallee, Wichita, Bob Sallee and Harold Sallee, both of Liberal, and Kenneth Sallee, Beaver, Okla.; three sisters, Lois Pfeifer, Forgan, and Dorothy Edwards and Mary Ann Pittser, both of Liberal; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Amador Memorial Cemetery in Pioneer, Calif., followed by a memorial service at noon at the Central Church of Christ in Jackson.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Amador, P.O. Box 595, Jackson, CA 95642.

McCrory's Funeral Home in Pine Grove, Calif., is in charge of arrangements.

FR. JOHN P. KOWAL

ULYSSES -- Father John P. Kowal, 69, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at his home in Ulysses.

He was born Sept. 16, 1932, to John Walter and Katherine Mary (Powers) Kowal in Boston.

He was the former pastor of Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses and St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Johnson.

He received a bachelor's of art degree in philosophy at St. Fidelis College in Herman, Penn., and a master's degree in religious education from Fordham University in New York.

He was ordained for the Capuchin order on Oct. 28, 1957, at Falls Church, Virginia, by the Most Reverend Joseph H. Hodges of the Diocese of Wheeling.

He first served in western Kansas as a teacher at St. Francis High School in Victoria from 1959 to 1965. He was assistant pastor at St. Joseph's in Hays from 1965 to 1966, and then at St. Mary's in Ellis from 1966 to 1967.

He served as military chaplain from 1968 to 1981. He survived being shot down and was rescued from a helicopter crash landing during his tour in Vietnam.

He also served as chaplain at Ft. Hood, Texas; Ft. Greeley, Alaska; Ft. Sill, Oklahoma; Ft. Hamilton, New York; and at an American base in Germany.

He twice received the Meritorious Service Award, twice was awarded a Bronze Star and three times was awarded the Army Commendation Medal. He received an Air Medal for Civic Action in Vietnam.

He was incardinated as a member of the clergy of the Diocese of Dodge City in 1971. He returned to the diocese from his military chaplaincies in 1981, and served as diocesan vicar for religious education and later chaplain at St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City.

He served as pastor at the following parishes: St. Rose of Lima, Great Bend, 1984-1988; Mary Queen of Peace, Ulysses, 1988-2000; and St. Bernadette, Johnson, 1989-2000.

He served the diocese in the following additional positions: moderator for the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women in the Great Bend Deanery; co-adjutor dean for the Garden City Deanery; and as a member of the Commission for Continuing Education of Priests.

Survivors include a close family friend, Dottie Stenstrom and husband, John, Staughton, Mass.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Vigil services and rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses.

Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Bishop Ronald M. Gilmore and other clergy of the Dodge City Diocese presiding.

Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses with military rites conducted by the Ulysses American Legion.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.

Memorials are suggested to either the Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church Scholarship Fund, the St. Bernadette Catholic Church Scholarship Fund, or to the Cathedral Building Fund, all in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.
