BERTHA F. AKERS
KINSLEY -- Bertha F. Akers, 85, formerly of Kinsley, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Hill Top Home in Bucklin.
She was born Jan. 14, 1916, to Nelson and Hatie (Droegemeier) Heitschmidt in Liberal.
She married Alfred Akers June 6, 1934, in Liberal. He died Feb. 12, 1999.
She had owned Al's Clothing in Kinsley.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Offerle.
Survivors include one son, Verle Ray Akers, San Antonio; one brother, Don Heitschmidt, Forgan, Okla.; four sisters, Joyce Harper, Liberal, Noragene King, Baker, Idaho, Irene Wallace, Denver, and Violet DeWolfe, Amarillo, Texas; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Offerle Methodist Church in Offerle with the Rev. Avery Rutledge presiding.
McKillip Memorial Funeral Home in Kinsley is in charge of arrangements.
OMA J. LAPPIN
HUGOTON -- Oma Jane Lappin, 98, Hugoton, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.
She was born Feb. 9, 1903, to August and Celia Friend in Licking, Mo.
She married James Preston Hamblin in 1923 in Houston, Mo. He died in October 1948.
She married George Lappin in October 1957 in Clayton, N.M. He died in July 1964.
She moved from Jetmore to Hugoton in 1935, and in 1957 moved to Larned. She then moved back to Hugoton in the early 1990s.
She was a homemaker and cooked in restaurants.
She was a member of the Baptist church in Missouri.
Survivors include two sons, Russell Hamblin and wife, Marjorie, Hugoton, and James A. Hamblin, Laverne, Okla.; one daughter, Evelyn Florence Hauf, Hugoton; two sisters, Minnie Renick, Licking, and Mandy Venable, Houston, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; two sons, James Leland Hamblin and Everett Dean Hamblin; four brothers, John Friend, Henry Friend, Charlie Friend and Sherman Friend; one sister, Goldie Friend; and three grandsons, Rodney Hamblin, Larry Horn and Michael Hamblin.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton with the Minister Gaylon Cox presiding.
Burial will be at 4 p.m. at the Fairmont Cemetery
in Jetmore.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Paul's Funeral Home.

MANUEL GARCIA
COPELAND -- Manuel Garcia, 88, formerly of Copeland, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc. in Montezuma.
He was born May 21, 1913, to Cruz and Cayethana (Olivas) Garcia in Chihuahua, Mexico.
He married Guadelupe Marquez June 9, 1945, in Col. Albaro Obregon, Chihuahua. She survives.
He had been a resident of Bethel Home Inc. since Aug. 18, 1998.
He was a rancher and cowboy and retired in 1991.
Other survivors include five sons, Jesus Garcia, Spearman, Texas, Mario Garcia, Chihuahua, Cruz Garcia, Columbus, N.M., Guadalupe Garcia, El Mirage, Ariz., and Miguel Garcia, Eden, Texas; four daughters, Consepcion Garcia and Diva Withers, both of Copeland, Cayetana Antillon, Albuquerque, N.M., and Lourdes Mendoza, Los Lunas, N.M.; one brother, Cruz Garcia, Chihuahua; 36 grandchildren; and 47 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Juan Ramon Garcia; one brother, Encarnacion Garcia; one sister, Librada Garcia; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Salem Mennonite Church in Copeland with the Ministers Sam Unruh Jr., Steve Unruh and Verle Yost presiding.
Burial will be at Salem Church Cemetery
in Copeland.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Montezuma Funeral Home in Montezuma.

EVELYN D. BURNS
SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Evelyn D. Burns, 88, South Sioux City, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital.
She was born Aug. 9, 1913, to Clyde and Daisy D. (Michels) Hatfield in Kingman.
She married Carmen W. Burns June 5, 1932, in Garden City. He died in August 1986.
She moved from Ketchum, Okla., to Sheldon, Iowa, in 1980 and then to South Sioux City in 1983.
Survivors include one son, Terry Burns and wife, Mary Lou, Sioux City; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two sons, Gerald Burns and Larry Burns; and one brother, LeRoy Hatfield.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Memorial Park Cemetery
in Sioux City with the Rev. Tom Jacobs presiding.
Cremation has already taken place.
Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City is in charge of arrangements.
WILLIAM F. MCKEEN
William F. "Bill" McKeen, 88, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
He was born Sept. 11, 1913, to Charles W. and Mary Cecelia (Mangel) McKeen in Turley, Okla.
He completed two years of college at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla.
He had been a resident of Liberal for 41 years, moving here from Midland, Texas.
He married Gladys M. "Peggy" Jacobsen Sept. 21, 1939, in Woodward, Okla. She died Oct. 1, 2001.
He began a career in the oil business in the 1930s. Spanning more than 50 years, his job took him from off-shore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico to completing a well at the highest recorded elevation at that time -- Soldier Summit, Utah. Most of his time in the oil business was spent in west Texas.
He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Liberal.
He was a member of the Liberal Country Club in Liberal.
Survivors include one son, Charles William McKeen and wife, Nancy, Liberal; one daughter, Teresa D. McKeen and husband, Dave, Dallas, Texas; three grandsons, Charlie, Max and Johnny Perdue; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Dorothy Payne; and one grandson, William F. McKeen III.
Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home Chapel in Liberal.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home Chapel, with Father Patrick A. Keyes presiding.
Burial will follow at the Liberal Cemetery
in Liberal.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the Vigil service at the funeral home.

CHRISTAL F. COLLINS
TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M. -- Christal Faye Collins, 60, former Plains resident, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces, N.M., from complications of a diabetic condition.
She was born June 26, 1941, to Willard and Jessie Henry in Plains.
She married William Collins. He preceded her in death.
She was a homemaker most of her life. She also worked as a respiratory therapist until she became disabled and was forced to retire.
Survivors include her mother, Jessie McDermott, Truth-or-Consequences; two daughters, Denise Bromwell, Hutchinson, and Kari Cargil, Nickerson, Texas; two sons, Richard Bromwell, Kansas City, Mo., and Robert Dean Betts, Bullhead City, Ariz.; one sister, Dixie Barnhart, Healy; three brothers, Larry Henry, Colorado Springs, Colo., Sam Henry, Maysville, Okla., and Willard Kent Henry, Aurora, Colo.; and three granddaughters, one grandson, and many nieces, nephews and other family members.
She was also preceded in death by her father and one brother.
There will be no local services held.
Burial will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Fort Logan Cemetery
in Denver.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cal Farley's Boy's Ranch in Canyon, Texas, or to the American Diabetes Association.
PHYLLIS MAE RULE
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Phyllis Mae Rule, 72, former Liberal resident, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, due to complications from Parkinson's disease.
She was born Jan. 6, 1930, in Liberal.
She married James A. Rule. The couple were married for 44 years. He preceded her in death.
She was active in many clubs and sports including golf, swimming, horseback riding and snow skiing.
She attended nursing school where she specialized in anesthesia. She was one of the first anesthetists at Arlington Memorial Hospital in the late 1950s.
Survivors include her children, Tracey (Rule) Joiner, Leslie Rule, Brent Rule and Beth (Rule) Skipper.
Memorial services were at 1 p.m. Jan. 3, 2002, at St. Albans Episcopal Church in Arlington.
Services were under the direction of Guardian Funeral Home in Arlington.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to the Parkinson's Foundation.
