John Phillip VanDyke, 67, of Atchison, KS, died Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at the Atchison Hospital.
Memorial services will be 1:00 PM Saturday, January 2, 2010 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with Fr. Gerard Senecal, OSB, officiating. The body has been cremated. No visitation will be held. Mr. VanDyke was born on August 2, 1942 in Atchison, KS, the son of Tom and Mildred (Bigelow) VanDyke. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1960 and moved to California and had worked as a bartender. He moved back to Atchison in 2003.
Survivors include a brother; Thomas J. VanDyke, Bitburg, Germany, two nieces; Chris VanDyke, and Ruth Malone, both of Arvada, CO, several cousins and special neighbors, Janet and Don, Atchison, KS.
Evelyn "Elaine" Ball, 65 years old, of Atchison, KS. died Sunday, December 27, 2009 at the Atchison Medicalodge.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM on Tuesday, December 29th, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with Rev. Stephen Lucas, Pastor of the Faith Bible Fellowship Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until time of service at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Elaine was born on Feb. 6, 1944 in St. Joseph, MO., the daughter of Louis and Evelyn (Warner) Schubert. She graduated from high school in St. Joseph. She retired as a food server for USD #409 after approx 10 years. She was a member of the Faith Bible Fellowship Church, the Women’s group of the church, and enjoyed bowling, and collecting dolls and angels.
Elaine was married to Robert O. Ball on Nov. 22, 1971 in Atchison, KS. Mr. Ball preceded her in death on Sept. 4, 2009. Her father and two brothers also preceded her in death. Survivors include her mother; Evelyn Schubert, St. Joseph, Mo., two sons; Monte Ball, Atchison, KS., Jack Miller, Kansas City, MO., a daughter; Vivian (Roland) Moore, Atchison, KS., ten grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
JL Bolinger, 81, of Nortonville, KS, passed away Thursday, December 24, 2009 at the Village Villa Nursing Home of Nortonville.
Funeral Services will be 10:00 AM, Monday, December 28, 2009 at the O’Trimble Funeral Home in Nortonville with the Rev. John Tweed, officiating. Burial will follow in the Nortonville Cemetery. JL was born on May 7, 1928 in Huntsville, Arkansas, the first born of thirteen children to James and Alice (Johnson) Bolinger. JL went to school in Huntsville, finishing 9 grades before leaving to help on the family farm. He served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. JL and Lorraine Jones were married in Winchester, KS on October 1, 1955. Together they farmed in the Nortonville area.
JL loved other people and it was often said that he knew no stranger. JL was known as the “Mule Man” to many because his mule team and wagon, which he made, would attend parades and other public events. He also enjoyed welding.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine of the home; son, Wayne of Lansing, KS; daughter, Annette Barnes of Eudora, KS; one brother, Charles of Valley, MO; six sisters, Maxine Beal and Lorene Bolinger of Wichita, KS, Lavera MacAfee and Vina Kidd of Huntsville, AR, Lucille Collins of Springdale, AR, and Polly Majors of Beaumont, TX; and four grandchildren.
JL is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Art and Joe; three sisters, Tiny Lawson, Norma Walden and Mary Tuttle.
Judith J. Taylor, 70, of Atchison, KS died Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, Dec. 29th, 2009 at the Trinity Episcopal Church with Fr. Andrew Grosso officiating. Burial will follow in the Trinity Episcopal Church Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until time of service at the Trinity Episcopal Church. The Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Judy was born on September 17, 1939 in Atchison, KS the daughter of the late Max and Zilpha (Cummings) Ball. She graduated from Atchison High School and then received her teaching degree from Emporia State Teachers College. Judy was a member of the Pi Chapter of Sigma, Sigma, Sigma Sorority. She taught school for several years and then stayed home to raise her family. Judy was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, lifetime member of the Friends of the Library, on the Friends of the Library Board and was a member of the Bridge Club, playing in the Roundelay Bridge Tournaments. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, playing bridge and especially her grandchildren.
Judy was married to James L. Taylor on June 4, 1961 in Atchison, KS. Mr. Taylor survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son; Chris S. (Kim) Taylor, Atchison, KS, two daughters; Sheridan Anderson, Kansas City, MO and Tish (Jarret) Sick, Shawnee, KS, a brother; Butch Ball, Atchison, KS, and a sister; Kathy Hines, Atchison, KS, and five grandchildren.
Richard 'Rick' M. Brown, 52, passed away December 13, 2009 in Canon City, Colorado.
A memorial service will be at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, December 17, 2009 at the Holt Chapel of the Garden in Canon City, CO. Another memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, December 21, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison, Kansas. The family will receive friends in Atchison for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. He was born in Pearl City, Hawaii on October 1, 1957 to Benjamin and Barbara (Benton) Brown. He was united in marriage to Sandi Stynski on December 28, 1984 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Richard served with the U. S. Marines and U.S. Army. Rick had worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Leavenworth for a number of years before moving to Florence, CO in 1993 to work at the prison there, retiring in 2008. He enjoyed camping, fishing, panning for gold, and setting up firework displays.
Richard is survived by his wife, Sandi of Florence; daughter, Rachel Brown; mother, Barbara; siblings, Dan (Joyce) Brown, Judy (Wes) Lentz, Jane (Dwaine) Klingman, Paul (Sherry) Brown, and Beth (Rob) Stone; father-in-law, Norbert Stynski; sister-in-law, Suzie (Charles) Reilly; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father; brother, Audie; and mother-in-law, Patricia Stynski.
Marian C. Gilliland, 92, passed away Monday, December 14, 2009 at her home in Atchison.
Funeral Services will be 12:00 noon, Friday, December 18, 2009 at the First Christian Church in Atchison with the Rev. Lee Hendon, officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison. Family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Marian was born October 29, 1917 in Atchison, KS. Her adoptive parents were Andrew L. and Philippine Willimena (Dilgert) Kurtz. Marian graduated from Atchison High School in 1936 and had worked part-time at J.C. Penney’s and Sears, both of Atchison. Marian was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who loved spending time with her family. She was a member of the First Christian Church, a deaconess of the church and belonged to the Christian Women’s Fellowship of the church where she had served as its treasurer. She was also a 25 year member of the Independence Home Extension Unit. Marian was an avid seamstress and enjoyed making many ceramic projects.
Marian and Elmer Berry were united in marriage on April 24, 1937 in Atchison at the First Christian Church. Elmer preceded her in death on March 21, 1975. Marian married Charles ‘Ed’ Gilliland on October 16, 1976 also at the church and he preceded her in death on November 30, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one step-son, Charles E. Gilliland, II; two brothers; and five sisters.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen (Joe) Noll of Atchison and Jeanette Damkroger of Richardson, TX; one step-daughter, Peggy Gilliland of Horton, KS; one step-son, Stephen (Dorothy) Gilliland of Jacksonville, FL; one brother, Ted Otte of Atchison; five grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; thirteen step-great grandchildren; two step great-great grandchildren.
Larry Dean Jones, 67, of Atchison passed Friday, December 11, 2009 at his home, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Jones has been cremated and no services have been planned at this time. A private family burial of cremains will be at a later date. Larry was born May 16th, 1942 in Atchison KS, the son of Loren and Anna (Hembrough) Jones. Mr. Jones was a self-employed welder and auto mechanic. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and working on cars.
He married Sharon Frasher on July 10, 1962 in Omaha, NE, she survives of the home. Additional survivors include five sons; Larry (Carol) Jones, Kansas City, MO, Jim (Shelly) Jones, Big Lake, AL, Christopher (Leann) Jones, Liberty, KS, Scott (Christina) Jones, Denton, KS, Rex (Misty) Jones, Atchison, KS, one daughter; Teresa (Derek) Gillmore, Atchison, KS and one sister Bonnie (Larry) Purcell, Atchison, KS, also fourteen grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Loren Jones and a son Charles Thomas Jones.
