Helen Kempin, 78, of Topeka, KS was found Friday, November 27th, 2009 at her apartment in Topeka.

Graveside services and burial will be 11:00 AM on Monday, December 7th, 2009 at the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison, KS, with Rev. David Schemm, Pastor of the Christ Lutheran Church, Topeka, officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to services at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Christ Lutheran Church, and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Condolences to the family maybe left online at www.beckerdyer.com.

Helen L. Kempin was born on August 23, 1931 in Leavenworth, KS, the daughter of Carl F. and Marion (Everett) Kempin. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1949. Helen worked for a short time at the Hallmark Cards Company, Leavenworth, KS and then as a clerk for the Santa Fe Railroad in Topeka, KS. She retired in 1992. Miss Kempin was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church, Topeka, KS, she enjoyed the Theatre, Stage plays, and especially loved her dog and animals.

Survivors include three brothers; Carl (Morine) Kempin, Overland Park, KS, Robert Kempin, Atchison, KS, and Don E. Kempin, Atchison, KS, and several nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews.

Lila M. Woods, 82 of Atchison, KS passed away Sunday November 29, 2009 at Medicalodge of Atchison.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday December 2, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Joseph Hansen officiating. Burial will follow in the Lancaster Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00pm Tuesday at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to Abundant Life Hospice and sent in care of the funeral home. Lila M. Woods was born May 13, 1927 the daughter of Zenus and Ida (Hattan) Rupert. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1945. She worked as a seamstress for the Horton Garment Company for 16 years. She enjoyed quilting, gardening and painting. Lila was president of the Willing Wonders Club, wrote many newspaper articles, was a member of the ILGWU 538 Club, and was the family historian.

Lila married John “Jack” Woods in December 1964; he preceded her in death August 12, 2002. Survivors include two sons; Rod Minnick, Ridgecrest, CA, Ken (Vickie) Minnick, Stafford, VA, one daughter, Linda (David) Larson, Lockport, NY, a brother, Albert Hale, Atchison, KS, a sister, Louise Cantwell, Oklahoma City, OK, five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth M. Willming, 90, of Atchison, KS, died Saturday, November 28, 2009 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, December 1st, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Lee Hendon officiating. Burial will follow in the Muscotah Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 PM on Tuesday at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association and sent in care of the funeral home. Condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com.

Ruth M.Tipling was born on Sep. 20, 1919 in Muscotah, KS. She worked as a clerk for the Saunders Manufacturing Drug Store, Valley Falls. She was a former member of the Christian Church, Valley Falls, KS. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning, sewing, plants and flowers, camping and talking with family. Ruth was a loving wife and mother. She was a wonderful grandmother who enjoyed helping family. She is at peace now that the Lord has re-united her with her soul-mate James E. Willming, who preceded her in death on May 24, 2002.

Survivors include two sons; Donald (Brenda) Willming, Rushville, MO and Edward (Gayle) Willming, Overland Park, KS, a brother; Earl Tipling, CA, a sister; Florence Nevins, Valley Falls, KS, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Her parents, her husband, a brother; Walt Tipling, and one grandchild preceded her in death.

Russell E. Kiehl, 85 years of age, of Atchison, KS., died unexpectedly Sat. November 28, 2009 at the Atchison Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, Dec. 1st, 2009 at the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Nortonville, KS, with Pastor Michael VanVelzer officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM on Monday, Nov. 30th, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com.

Russell was born on March 4, 1924 in Atchison, KS, the son of Russell L. and Harriett (Kopelk) Kiehl. Mr. Kiehl graduated from Atchison High School in 1942. Following graduation from high school he moved to Benicia, CA, and worked at Benicia Arsenal. He was a retired Chief Master Sgt of the U.S. Airforce Reserves serving 33 years, and during World War II with the 506th Fighter Squadron. He served on Iwo Jima, and was honored with two Battle Stars for air combat and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal. Mr. Kiehl was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis in 1961-1962 and was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base outside of Washington, D.C. When he returned home Mr. Kiehl worked at the Kiehl Brothers Service Station, Atchison, then the Martin Oil Company, CHC Tire Supply, and then Page Airways until he retired in 1986. He continued to work at the Veterans Administration Medical Center and Fort Leavenworth, in Leavenworth KS for many years following his retirement. He was a member of the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Nortonville, KS, the V.F.W. Post # 1175, and the American Legion Post # 6, both of Atchison, KS, a member of the Air Force Sergeants’ Association, was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and was an avid bowler.

Russell was married to Della Walker on February 23, 1945 in Jasper; AL. Mrs. Kiehl preceded him in death on November 30, 2004. His parents, a son; Russell E. Kiehl, Jr., two brothers; Harry E. Kiehl, and Carl E. Kiehl, also preceded him in death. Survivors include a daughter and Son-in-law; Jeannine A. and Stephen R. Wyatt, Topeka, KS, a brother; John H. Kiehl, Sun Lake, AZ., two grandchildren; J. Kyle Watt, Topeka, KS, and Katherine Wyatt Turner, Lawrence, KS, and one great grandson; David Wyatt Turner, Lawrence, KS., a nehew and niece; Harry and Delores Kiehl, Atchison, KS, a niece; Pamela King, Phoenix, AZ, nephews; John Kiehl, Nixa, MO, and Kevin Kiehl, Westminster, CO,great nieces and great nephews, and numerous cousins.

Norman Hayes, 72, Atchison, passed away, Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at the Atchison Senior Village.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, November 28, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Chaplain Jack Albright officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials in honor of Mr. Hayes are suggested to help with funeral expenses and may be left in care of the funeral home. Condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com.

Norman was born November 2, 1937 in Atchison, KS the son of the late Fred and Bernice (Bigenwalt) Hayes. Norman worked on a shrimp boat in the Gulf of Mexico, in the maintenance department at Boston College and as a handyman around town. He enjoyed to go fishing, working on vehicles and Uncle Normy loved to make people laugh.

Norman married Nancy Dalbey and she preceded him in death. Later he married June Simpson, who also preceded him in death. He is survived by his children, Danny, Rodney, Michael and Randy Hayes, Susan Hayes, Jamie Wainright and Patty Hector, Sisters; Judy Prohaska, Atchison, KS and Patricia Negonsott, Effingham, KS, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a brother; Walter Hayes, and two sisters; Barbara Gilliland and Jeanette Hayes.

Leo G. Boos, 62, formerly of Atchison, passed away, Sunday, November 22, 2009 in Paola, KS.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Fr. Gerard Senecal, OSB, officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A rosary will be recited at 9:30 AM Wednesday at the funeral home with visitation to follow until 11:00 AM. Memorials in honor of Mr. Boos are suggested to Sacred Heart and may be left in care of the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com.

Leo was born April 1, 1947, in Atchison, KS the son of the late Harold Charles and Evelyn S. (Novinski) Boos. He graduated from Maur Hill in 1965 and moved to Iowa where he worked as a butcher for Oscar Mayer. Leo married Yvonne Wood and they later divorced. He was a member of Sacred Heart and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include two sons; John Boos, Hiawatha, KS, and James Boos, Kansas City, KS, four brothers; John (Dee), Vancouver, WA, Steve (Cheryl) Excelsior Springs, MO, George (Jane) and Harold (Olivia) both of Atchison, three sisters; Mary (Ray) Kopaska, Olathe, KS, Cecilia (Frank) Bisang, Overland Park, KS, and Kathy Kisenmacher, Valley, WA, and one grandson; Cody Boos, Reno, NV.

Leo was also preceded in death by two brothers; Charles and Al Boos and one sister; Theresa Baker.

Alenna M. Sanders, 94, of Nortonville, KS, died Tuesday, July 27th, 2010 in Topeka, KS.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday, July 30, 2010 at the Cummings Christian Church with Rev. Gary Patterson officiating. Burial will follow in the Pardee Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, July 29th, 2010 at the O’Trimble Funeral Home, Nortonville, KS. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Cumming Christian Church or Jefferson County North Elementary School Library. Condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com.

Alenna was born on January 17th, 1916 on a farm north of Effingham, KS, the daughter of John D. and Alice (Law) Hawk. She graduated from Washburn University with a degree in teaching. Mrs. Sanders taught school for 16 years in Atchison County and 27 years in Jefferson County before retiring in 1978. She was a member of the Cummings Christian Church, the Retired Teachers Association, the Washburn Alumnae Assoc., the Cummings Christian Church Ladies Aide and T.O. P. S. She enjoyed reading, volunteering and visiting with family and friends.

She was married to Merle Henry Sanders on May 26, 1940 at the Christian Church, Atchison. Mr. Sanders preceded her in death on July 30, 1983. Survivors include a daughter; Marlena Weishaar and her husband Leo, Topeka, KS, two grandsons; Michael Weishaar, San Diego, CA, and Craig Weishaar and his wife Amy, Lawrence, KS, two great grandchildren; Molly and Ryan Weishaar. Her parents, and eight brothers and sisters preceded her in death.
