JOHN R. FOSTER

CANTON, Ill. ­ John R. Foster, 73, Canton, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria, Ill.

He was born April 20, 1929, to Arthur and Ethel M. (Baker) Foster in Trivoli, Ill.

He married Daisy C. Kidd July 29, 1951, in Pittsfield, Ill. She died Aug. 1, 1999.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, where he received the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars and the United Nations Service Medal.

He worked for Brownies D/X Service Station, the St. Clair Grocery Store, and Krogers, all in Canton. He retired from Canton Union School District No. 66.

He was a member of the Spoon River Scenic Drive, and the American Legion Post No. 16.

Survivors include three sons, David B. Foster and wife, Dena, Canton, Daniel C. Foster and wife, Gwenda, Liberal, and Dr. Thomas B. Foster and wife, Celeste, Dunlap, Ill.; one daughter, Jaehnae R. Foster, Indianapolis; one brother, Harold Foster, rural Astoria, Ill.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and one sister.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oak-Hines Funeral Home in Canton with Gene Danner presiding.

Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Canton.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Oak-Hines Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to either the Children's Miracle Network or the American Lung Association, both in care of Oak-Hines Funeral Home, 1601 E. Chestnut, Canton, IL 61520.

MARY ANN WEDEL

MONTEZUMA ­ Mary Ann "Marie" Wedel, 80, Montezuma, died today, April 29, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc. in Montezuma, where she had been a resident.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Montezuma Funeral Home in Montezuma.

JOE W. LAIRD

ULYSSES ­ Joe Walter Laird, 88, Ulysses, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital in Ulysses.

He was born Aug. 16, 1913, to Frank Walter and Leah Evah (Hayse) Laird in Haviland.

He married Vada Viola Vick June 3, 1935, in Meade. She died Sept. 26, 2001.

He and his wife moved to Ulysses Oct. 24, 1949, from Liberal.

He was retired from Mesa Petroleum Co. ­ Hugoton Production, as a general superintendent.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses.

He was also a member of the Lions Club in Ulysses and the Masonic Lodge in Hugoton. He was past president of the Western Prairie Care Home Board, and past Grant County School Board member.

Survivors include four daughters, Roberta Garrett and husband, C.L., Liberal, Betty Jo Reeves and husband, Bob, Loveland, Colo., Sue Patten and husband, Joe, Midland, Texas, and Jane Hewson and husband, Paul, Garden City; two sisters, Esther Woods, Stinett, Texas, and Vesta Pinkerton, Pineville, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; one son, John Walter Laird; one brother, Francis Claude Laird; and one sister, Geneva Belle Thorpe.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses with Dr. Max Clayton and the Minister Bill Harrold presiding.

Burial was at Ulysses Cemetery.

GERTRUDE M. HUNTER

MEADE ­ Gertrude Marie "Gertie" Hunter, 86, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at the Lone Tree Compassionate Care Center in Meade.

She was born Feb 29, 1916, to George and Essie (Denny) Tacha in Jennings.

She married M. Grant Hunter Sept. 2, 1933, in Oberlin. He died Aug. 10, 2000.

She had been a resident of Meade since 1946, and she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Meade.

She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Rebekah Lodge, serving as past Noble Grand, all in Meade.

Survivors include two sons, Dean Hunter and wife Phyllis, Dallas, and Dennis Hunter and wife, Debra, Bedford, Texas; five sisters, Kathleen Boyd, Fowler, Margie Bruce, Odessa, Texas, Betty Kortz, Las Animas, Colo., Dottie Gillen, Meade, and Peggy Thompson, Texarkana, Ark.; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Kenneth Tacha, Richard Tacha, Darrell Tacha, and George Tacha Jr.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Meade with the Rev, Harry Fink presiding.

Burial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Jennings Cemetery in Jennings with the Rev. Michael Flowers presiding.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fidler-Orme Funeral Mortuary in Meade.

Memorials are suggested to either the First Baptist Church or the Lone Tree Compassionate Care Center in care of Fidler-Orme Mortuary, P.O. Box 70, 212 S. Fowler St., Meade, KS 67864.

WILLIAM HELTON

SATANTA -- William "Bill" Helton, Satanta, died Monday, April 29, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, in Wichita.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Haskell County Funeral Home in Sublette.

MARY A. WEDEL

MONTEZUMA -- Mary Ann "Marie" Wedel, 80, Montezuma, died Monday, April 29, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc. in Montezuma, where she had been a resident.

She was born Jan. 13, 1922, to Henry and Anna (Wiens) Toews, in Montezuma.

She married Harry David Wedel Feb. 13, 1944, in Montezuma.

She had been a lifetime resident of Montezuma. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Church of God In Christ Mennonite in Montezuma.

Other survivors include one son, John H. Wedel and wife, Norma J., Hillsdales, Okla.; four daughters, Sylvia Smith and husband, Robert, Muleshoe, Texas, Velma Wedel and Grace Wedel, both of Grafton, N.D., and Marcia Toews and husband, Dale, Elma, Manitoba, Canada; one daughter-in-law, Stella Wedel, Grafton; two brothers, David Toews and wife, Delila, Montezuma, and Walter Toews and wife, Linda, Grant, Neb.; seven sisters, Martha Goossen and husband, Abe, Nettie Goossen and husband, Victor, and Esther Penner and husband, Elmer, all of Rosenort, Manitoba, Canada, Ruth Schmidt, Iroquois, S.D., Elizabeth Toews, Ulysses, Frances Penner, Whitemouth, Manitoba, Canada, and Clara Epson and husband, George, Dodge City; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, David H. Wedel; and one sister, Susie Toews.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Church of God In Christ Mennonite in Montezuma with the Ministers Donald Koehn, Charles Schmidt and Glen Yost presiding.

Burial will be at North Mennonite Cemetery in Montezuma.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Montezuma Funeral Home in Montezuma.

CLAIRE YOXALL

WAKEENEY -- Claire (Marshall) Yoxall, 106, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at the Long Term Care Unit at Trego-Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney.

She was born May 5, 1895, to Grant G. and Julia (Cortright) Marshall in WaKeeney.

She married Richard Yoxall Aug. 14, 1923, in WaKeeney. He died in May 1929.

She attended school in WaKeeney and was a graduate of Trego Community High School in WaKeeney. She also attended and graduated from Fort Hays Normal, now Fort Hays State University, with a life certificate in teaching.

She taught school for eight years before her marriage.

She and her husband made their home in WaKeeney, and she was a life-time resident of the town.

She was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church in WaKeeney while it existed and later attended St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Hays until her health prohibited her from driving to Hays. She then attended Bethlehem Lutheran Church in WaKeeney.

In 1990, she was given a certificate and pin for 75 years of membership in the Margaret Chapter of the Order of Easter Star in WaKeeney. She was also a member of the Randall Reid VFW Post No. 3449 Auxiliary and was in many social and business clubs in WaKeeney.

She traveled to Europe and to the Mideast and Far East with the Kansas and General Federated Women's Clubs groups.

Her hobbies included photography, and she took many pictures of the places she visited. She also enjoyed painting.

Survivors include one son, James Richard Yoxall and wife, Constance, Liberal; one grandson, Richard R. Yoxall and wife, Andrea, Liberal; one granddaughter, Bonnie L. Frederick and husband, Terry, Lenexa; two great-grandchildren, Ashlee Yoxall and Logan Yoxall, both of Liberal; one nephew; and numerous great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Walter G. Marshall; and one sister, Cora Walsh.

A public memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Private family graveside services have been conducted.

Memorials may be left in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 N. 12th Street, WaKeeney, KS 67672. A specific charity will be designated at a later date.

EDWIN B. HOLLAND

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Edwin B. Holland, 86, St. Joseph, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital in St. Joseph.

He was born Aug. 28, 1915, to Lamon Lunnon and Georgia (Cain) Holland in Liberal.

He married Loy Pearl Schamaun May 16, 1943, in Fort Scott. She survives.

He graduated from Kansas State University in Manhattan in 1941 with a bachelor's of science degree in electrical engineering.

He worked for United Light and Railway Company in Davenport, Iowa, in 1941. He was transferred to the St. Joseph Light and Power Company in St. Joseph in 1949, where he was a rate analyst.

He retired in September 1980.

He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church of St. Joseph, where he served as an Elder and Deacon.

Other survivors include two sons, David Holland and wife, Jeannette, St. Joseph, and Thomas Holland and wife, Edith, Independence, Mo.; two daughters, Cheryll Dawson and husband, Al, and Margie Holland, all of St. Joseph; two nephews, John Bozarth, Kansas City, Mo., and Steven Bozarth, Lawrence; one niece, Nancy Long and husband, Steve, Wichita; one great-nephew, Matthew Long; and one great-niece, Robyn Long.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Meierhoffer Family Funeral Service in St. Joseph.

Burial will be at Mount Auburn Cemetery in St. Joseph.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Wednesday at Meierhoffer Family Funeral Service in St. Joseph. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.

The family suggests memorials to either the Second Presbyterian Church or charity of the donor's choice, both in care of Meierhoffer Family Funeral Service, P.O. Box 6099, St. Joseph, MO 64506.

ROBERT W. MOORE

SHAMROCK, Texas -- Robert William Moore, 75, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, in Amarillo, Texas.

He was born Feb. 11, 1926, to John William and Jessie Brown in Canadian, Texas.

He married Frances Lambley March 21, 1952, in Hooker, Okla. She survives.

He graduated from Allison High School in 1943.

He served in the Army during World War II.

He farmed in the Dalhart, Texas, area for many years.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Other survivors include his mother, Jessie Moore, Perryton, Texas; one brother, John Moore, Wheeler, Texas; one sister, Mildred Schroeder, Corpus Christi, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; one sister, Lilly Ann; one brother-in-law, Delbert Lambley; and one nephew, Bill Lambley.

Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zybach Cemetery in Allison, Texas, with the Brother Joe G. Jernigan presiding.

Burial was at Zybach Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Shamrock in care of Wright Funeral Home, 311 N. Wall, Shamrock, TX 79079.
