BARBARA L. GROVES
WICHITA Barbara L. Groves, 72, mother of Liberal resident Andrea Yoxall, died Saturday, June 15, 2002.
She was born March 31, 1930, to Robert E. and Naomi Carver in Dallas.
She married Bill Groves Aug. 20, 1950, in Salina. He survives.
She worked as a floral designer and was co-owner of Gro-Morr Pharmacy, both in Salina.
Her hobbies included golfing and traveling, including numerous trips to Hawaii.
She was an active member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Wichita.
Other survivors include one son, Bill Groves Jr. and wife, Jeri, Jefferson City, Mo.; two daughters, Andrea Yoxall and husband, Rick, Liberal, and Rebecca Flaton and Mark Koehler, Parsons; one sister-in-law, Geraldine Walker, Hays; and four grandchildren, Frank Flaton, Manhattan, Eric Flaton, Lawrence, and Ashlee Yoxall and Logan Yoxall, both of Liberal.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary United Methodist Church in Wichita.

BIRDIE E. WHITEHEAD
MEADE -- Birdie E. Whitehead, 96, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Lone Tree Compassionate Care Center in Meade.
She was born Oct. 20, 1905, to Joseph F. and Mary E. (Hadden) Dillow in Oakley, Ill.
She married Carl Lester Whitehead Aug. 6, 1924, in Beaver, Okla. He died May 6, 1945.
She graduated from Wichita North High School in Wichita in 1923.
She was a retired postal service employee of 33 years.
She was a member of the Saint Augustine Episcopal Church in Meade.
She was a former Worthy Matron in the Order of Eastern Star, Webb Chapter in Meade.
Survivors include two daughters-in-law, Beth Whitehead, Wichita, and Mary Belle Whitehead, Kermit, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Pam White, Waterville, Pat Jackson, Phoenix, Steve Whitehead, Rose Hill, Linda Moore, El Paso, Texas, Mike Whitehead, Corpus Christi, Texas, Teresa Chadic, Monahans, Texas, Debbie Caldwell, Port Lavaca, Texas, Bill Whitehead, Wichita, Wesley Bridgeman, Coppell, Texas, and Fred Bridgeman, Denver; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Graceland Cemetery
in Meade with the Father James Shannon presiding.
Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery
in Meade.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade. The family will greet friends from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

WILLIAM R. TATUM
SEGUIN, Texas -- William Richard "Dick" Tatum, 73, died Thursday, June 13, 2002, in Seguin.
He was born Nov. 4, 1928, to Richard E. and Virginia S. Tatum in Dodge City.
He graduated from Liberal High School in Liberal in 1946 and earned a bachelor's of arts degree in journalism in 1951 from the University of Kansas.
He served as a military editor and NCO in charge of Wing Information Services Office at Gary Air Force Base in San Marcos, Texas.
After holding public relations positions at Texas Tech and Texas A&M universities, he joined Aluminum Company of America in 1963 in Pittsburgh. He also served ALCOA in community and public relations in Massena, N.Y., Wenatchee, Wash., and Port Lavaca, Texas.
In 1979, he returned to Seguin and published "The Valley News" in western Guadalupe County. He was also a real estate broker and did private advocacy publishing relating to taxpayer rights.
He was a founder of the Guadalupe County Taxpayers Association and later Texas Foundation for Taxpayers Rights Inc.
He was city treasurer for the the city of Seguin in 1984 and was elected to the Seguin ISD board of trustees, serving as secretary, vice-president and president from 1992 to 1996.
He also served on the Guadalupe County Appraisal District board of directors.
The helped establish the Sunrise Rotary Club as charter secretary.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Jo'an Y. Tatum, Seguin; three daughters, Jo'anna Tatum Snowden and husband, Gary, Plano, Texas, Amy Tatum Peek and husband, Bill, Liberty Hill, Texas, and Kathryn Tatum Stephens and husband, David, Dallas; one brother, Leland W. Tatum, Houston; and four grandchildren, Ellen Snowden and Patrick Snowden, both of Plano, and Daniel Peek and James Peek, both of Liberty Hill.
Memorial services were at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Seguin.
Burial will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery's San Antonio Columbarium at a later date.

GARY HILDEBRAND
Gary Hildebrand, 61, Liberal, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.
Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.
FRED JORDAN JR.
FOWLER -- Fred Jordan Jr., 76, died Monday, June 17, 2002, at Minneola District Hospital in Minneola.
He was born Dec. 19, 1925, to Fred and Leona (Stark) Jordan in St. John.
He married Margaret Elsie Chipman Dec. 22, 1949, in St. John. She survives.
He had been a resident of Fowler since 1984.
He was an oil field worker and later worked for Michigan-Wisconsin Natural Gas.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and had been a prisoner of war in Germany.
Other survivors include one son, Fred Owen Jordan, Shattuck, Okla.; three brothers, James M. Jordan, Cherryvale, Eugene Jordan, Orem, Utah, and Thain Jordan, Eldorado Springs, Mo.; one sister, Jeannette Klein, Kismet; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Fowler Cemetery
in Fowler with the Pastor Alan Snyder presiding.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade.

GENEVA L. PRITCHETT
BLOOM -- Geneva Louise Pritchett, 68, died Monday, June 17, 2002, at her daughter's home in Kingsdown.
She was born April 10, 1934, to Warnie "Butch" and Ona (Oxford) Lovell in Bentonville, Ark.
She married Francis "Frank" Pritchett Jan. 2, 1951, in Tucumcari, N.M. He survives.
She had been a resident of Bloom since 1992.
She had worked as a CMA at the Good Samaritan Center and Trinity Manor in Dodge City. She was also a homemaker.
Other survivors include three sons, Calvin Pritchett, Bloom, Robert "Bob" Pritchett and wife, Sandy, Dodge City, and Timothy Pritchett, Kingsdown; three daughters, Kathleen "Kathy" Allen and husband, Wayne, Branson, Mo., Brenda Sallee, Bucklin, and Tracy Pritchett and husband, Kevin, Kingsdown; two brothers, Dale Lovell and Jack Lovell, both of California; two sisters, Ruby Redding, Duncan, Okla., and Eula Kreger, Spanaway, Wash.; two sisters-in-law, Marine Perry, Keota, Okla., and Karen Jackson, Kingsdown; two brothers-in-law, Kenneth Pritchett, Fountain, Colo., and James "Ducky" Pritchett, Dodge City; 21 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary Chapel in Meade with the Rev. Orlando R. Jantz presiding.
Burial will be at Atwater Cemetery
in rural Meade.

ELEANOR M. FOSTER
DARROUZETT, Texas -- Eleanor Mae "Corky" Foster, 73, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Ochiltree General Hospice in Perryton, Texas.
She had been a long-time resident of Darrouzett and formerly owned and operated the Coffee Hut Cafe.
Survivors include one son, Darryl "Buzz" Foster, Normangee, Texas; three daughters, Debbie Babitzke and Karen Bentley, both of Darrouzett, and Susan Messner, Beaver; two sisters, Donna Briedenbach, Rapid City, S.D., and Shirley Timp, DeSmet, S.D.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Darrouzett Cemetery
in Darrouzett with Gary McDonald presiding.
Clark Funeral Service in Beaver, Okla., is in charge of arrangements.
GARY H. HILDEBRAND
Gary H. Hildebrand, 61, Liberal, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.
He was born Feb. 15, 1941, to Frank and Margaret (Hoyt) Hildebrand in Lyons.
He married Arlene Welty Dec. 28, 1968, in Sterling. She survives.
He was a graduate of Lyons High School in Lyons.
He served in the U.S. Army.
He had been a Liberal resident since 1972. He worked as a communications technician for America National Resource (ANR) Pipeline for 32 and a half years. He retired in January 2001.
He was a member of Boy Scouts of America. He was active in Boy Scouts as a youth and then rejoined along with his son in 1982. He was a BSA District Commissioner with Troop No. 73.
He received his Order of the Arrow Vigil membership Sept. 30, 1988.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and member of the Learners Sunday School Class.
He was also a member of Cushman Club of America, Southern Plains Amateur Radio Klub (SPARK) and American Amateur Radio League (AARL).
Other survivors include one son, Scott Hildebrand, Abilene; one daughter, June Hildebrand, Aurora, Colo.; two sisters, Mary Woelfel, Topeka, and Dorothy Brock, Oklahoma City; and one granddaughter, Angel Marie Hildebrand.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Liberal with the Rev. David Bagwell presiding.
Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Stafford Cemetery
in Stafford.
Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.
