VIRGINIA M. SWANSON
TOPEKA -- Virginia Mae Swanson, 80, died Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at a local hospital.
She was born April 2, 1922, to Archibald and Charlotte (Green) Paul in Taloga, Okla.
She married Bernard E. "Bud" Swanson March 4, 1943, in Topeka. He died Jan. 20, 1989.
She grew up in Randal County and graduated from Scandia High School in Scandia.
She worked as an appointment secretary for The Menniger Foundation for more than 30 years.
After retiring, she was a volunteer for Stormont-Vail Hospital.
She was a member of Northland Christian Church, NCHA, the local chapter "Topeks," Eastern Star, Medical Assistants Association and Stormont-Vail Auxiliary.
Her hobbies included traveling.
Survivors include one son, Greg Swanson, Liberal; two daughters, Sue N. Nelson and Paula Brubaker, both of Topeka; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel in Topeka.
Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery
in Topeka.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. today at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.

JOHN M. NOVACK
DEERFIELD -- John M. Novack, 77, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at his home in Deerfield.
He was born Jan. 30, 1925, to John Sr. and Anna (Hain) Novack in Windhorst.
He married Kathleen Agnes Danler June 19, 1945, in North Offerle. She survives.
He graduated from Windhorst High School.
He worked as a mechanic in Spearville and with his brother in Offerle. He moved to Dodge City and worked as a painter.
In 1951, he moved to Holcomb and became a custom hay bailer and then worked for 23 years at Santa Fe Motors in Deerfield. While working at Santa Fe Motors, he started doing custom body repair work on the side and in 1979, he started Novack Auto Sales in Deerfield.
He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church of Deerfield, Eagles Lodge of Garden City, Deerfield Lion's Club, Deerfield Spartons Booster Club and Sportsman Lake. He was a Deerfield volunteer fireman.
His hobbies included antique cars, bowling, dancing, hunting, fishing, horseshoe pitching and following his grandchildren's activities.
Other survivors include five sons, Gary Novack, Kansas City, Mo., Danny Novack and Dave Novack, both of Holcomb, Tim Novack, Lakin, and Kevin Novack, Deerfield; six daughters, Belinda Phillips, Salina, Pat Parker, Liberal, Cindy Rivers, Holcomb, Debbie Davis and Colleen Pruyser, both of Topeka, and Kim Leonard, Holcomb; one brother, Henry Novack, Hutchinson; one sister, Anna Myers, Offerle; 59 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sons, John, Joseph and James; one brother, Edward; one grandson, Phillip Novack; and two great-granddaughters, Adryon Knoll and Madison Parker.
Vigil services will be at 7:30 p.m. today at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Lakin.
Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City with the Fathers Mike Helms and Austin Herrman presiding.
Burial will be at Deerfield Cemetery.
Friends may call until 5:30 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin.

L.D. BATIE
HUGOTON -- L.D. Batie, 78, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hugoton.
He was born Nov. 8, 1923, to David William and Janie (Brooks) Batie in Jamestown, Tenn.
He married Edith Gunter in 1950.
He grew up in the Perryton, Texas, area. He lived in the Griggs community and moved to Keyes, Okla. in 1955.
He was a farmer and rancher in the Keyes community.
He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
He was a member of Baptist Church and V.F.W.
His hobbies included singing, playing the guitar, writing music, and listening to country music. He won a talent singing contest in high school. He sang at Guymon, Okla., Fair Days.
Survivors include three sons, Tommy Nolen Batie, Senca, Mo., Joe Allen Batie and wife, Cathy, Peoria, Okla., and David Wendell Batie, Benton, Wis.; six daughters, Carol Fansher, New Mexico, Pam Hagman and husband, Kent, Peggy Ann Boothby, Linda Burnett and husband, Carl, Debbie Crawford and husband, Cliff, all of Hugoton, and Lila Jane Cerecero and husband, JR, Concordia; three sisters, Bessie Longcor and husband, Andrew, Perryton, Edith, Calif., and Genevieve Hamby; 16 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Raymond Dale Batie and Doug Batie; one brother, William David Batie; and one sister, Ruby Batie.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton with the retired Pastor Robert Storms presiding.
Military graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Willowbar Cemetery
in Keyes, conducted by Boise City V.F.W.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton.
ROBERT D. OSBORNE
MEADE -- Robert D. Osborne, 70, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, in Omaha, Neb.
He was born Sept. 21, 1932, to Earl M. and Johanna F. (Adams) Osborne in Meade.
He married Barbara Parker Feb. 25, 1956, in Salina. She survives.
He graduated from Meade High School in 1950 and joined the United States Air Force in 1952.
While serving his country, he was stationed in Toul-Roisere, France, Utah, Arkansas, Illinois, Montana and Missouri. He retired from military service after 21 and one half years in 1973.
Upon his retirement, he moved to Knob Noster, Mo., where he was employed as a meat cutter and served on city council. In 1988, he bought a small farm in Jamestown and remained there until June 2000 when he and his wife sold the farm and moved to Omaha to receive medical treatment for lung cancer.
Other survivors include two sons, Ronald Osborne and wife, Kathy, Kansas City, Kan., and Daniel Osborne and wife, Donna, Tonganoxie; two daughters, Diane Clemons and husband, Terry, Knob Noster, and Brenda Stolpe and husband, Dave, Omaha, Neb.; one sister, Bonnie Elledge, Meade; 10 grandchildren, Tasha, Nicholas, Amanda, Daniel, Travis, Mollie, Brittany, Alicia, Parker and Sarah.
Memorial services were at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at Missouri Veterans Memorial Cemetery
in Higginsville, Mo., with military honors.

LUELLA L. WALTERS
ULYSSES -- Luella Louise "Tootsie" Walters, 73, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital in Ulysses.
She was born March 27, 1929, to Jess and Evelyn (Becker) Hamilton in White Rock, Colo.
She married Paul A. Walters Nov. 8, 1947, in Dodge City. He survives.
She came to Ulysses as a young girl with her parents.
She was a ward clerk at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital in Ulysses for many years. She was a past president of Ulysses Chamber of Commerce and owned Hutch Dress Shop in Ulysses.
She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and American Legion Auxiliary, both in Ulysses.
Her hobbies included spending time with her family.
Other survivors include two daughters, Lana S. Colman and husband, Rex, Ulysses, and Paula J. Koons and husband, Dyrl, Garden City; two sisters, Zelma Greenburg and Dena Borner, both of Roundup, Mont.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John's Episcopal Church in Ulysses with the Rev. Floyd Daharsh presiding.
Burial will be at Ulysses Cemetery
in Ulysses.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Grant County Funeral Home in Ulysses.

CAROL EGBERT
SUN CITY, Ariz. -- Carol Egbert, 53, former Plains resident, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002.
She was born Oct. 7, 1949, in Fowler.
She married Michael Egbert. He survives.
She received a master's degree in special education from the University of Kansas and taught in Kansas, Texas and Louisiana.
She and her family relocated from California to Glendale, Ariz., in 1996, where she and her husband were owners of Egbert's Sun City Mobil.
Other survivors include two daughters, Kelly and Katie; one brother, John Dreitz, Plains; and two sisters, Bondy Schmisseur and Donna Schmisseur.
Rosary services will be at 6 p.m. today at St. Jerome's Catholic Church in Sun City.
Memorial mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Jerome's Catholic Church.
