DAVID R. RIDER

ULYSSES -- David Ralph Rider, 48, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born May 23, 1954, to George Ralph and Alice Marie (Doerr) Rider in Ulysses.

He married Carol Adams Sept. 3, 1976, in Ulysses. She survives.

He was a lifetime resident of Ulysses.

He was a farmer, assistant manager at Bultman Inc. and the assistant fire chief for the Grant County Fire Department, where he had been a member for eight years.

He was a member of Mary Queen of Peach Catholic Church in Ulysses, president of Men's Monday Night Bowling League and also belonged to the Friday Night League.

His hobbies included hunting and fishing.

Other survivors include his mother; two sons, Shawn and Seth Rider, Ulysses; one daughter, Heather Zerr and husband, Austin, Ulysses; three sisters, Kathy Goff, Janet Curl and Mari Honstead, all of Ulysses; and one step-grandchild, Lauren Zerr, Eaton, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his father; father-in-law, Darwin Adams; and mother-in-law, Betty Adams.

Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. today at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church with the Rev. Louis Hoang presiding.

Burial will follow at Shockey Cemetery in Ulysses.

Friends may call until 5 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.

Memorials are suggested to Grant County Fireman's Association or American Cancer Society in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

PATRICK L. PIERCE

MOBERLY, Mo. -- Patrick L. "Pat" Pierce, 44, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at his home in Moberly.

He was born Oct. 19, 1958, to Glen D. and Barbara J. (Foster) Pierce in Saulte Sainte Marie, Mich.

He moved with his family to Moberly in 1975.

He was a 1977 graduate of Moberly High School and a 1979 graduate of Linn Technical School.

He worked for Nowell's Grocery in Columbia, Mo.

Survivors include his parents, of Moberly; one brother, Michael Eugene "Mike" Pierce and wife, Denise, Cairo; friend, Sallie Tucker, Columbia; two brothers-in-law, Mark Strange, Liberal, and Greg Embree, Caseyville, Mo.; and numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Janice Fansher, Jeanie Strange and Carrie Embree.

Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Cater Funeral Home Chapel in Moberly with the Revs. John Davidson and James McClintock presiding.

Friends may call from 6-7 p.m. Thursday at Cater Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to Missouri River Hospice of Columbia or Ellis Fischel Reseach, 115 Business Loop 70 West, Columbia, MO 65201.

NEVA T. HOUSTON

Neva Tinkler Houston, 91, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at Morton County Care Center in Elkhart.

She was born April 24, 1911, to Charles "Pete" and Mabelle (Hastings) Tinkler in Augusta.

She married Robert C. Lane.

She married Orville Houston July 6, 1966, in Hooker, Okla. He died April 3, 1986.

She was a restaurant owner and operator. She owned Neva's Cafe in Elkhart from 1947-1965. She owned the Sally Ann in Liberal and the Golden Derrick from 1960-1975.

She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Liberal.

Survivors include two grandsons, Richard D. Lane and Larry D. Lane; one great-grandchild, Cassandra Nutt; and two great-great-grandchildren, Caitlin and Alyssa Nutt.

She was preceded in death by one son, Richard Lane; two brothers, Wallace "Hotty" Tinkler and Bill Tinkler; one sister, Gay Moreland; and one grandson, Bob L. Lane.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home Chapel in Liberal with the Rev. Jerry Odle presiding.

Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery in Hutchinson.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to Seward County Community College Development Foundation in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 W. 2nd, Liberal, KS 67901.

VIRGIL D. PENNER

ALVIN, Texas -- Virgil Dale Penner, 69, former Liberal resident, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at Clear Lake Regional Medical Center in Webster, Texas.

He was born Dec. 9, 1932, to Jake and Gertrude Dalke Penner in Garden City.

He married Annie Picha June 18, 1955. She survives.

He moved to Liberal from the Garden City area in 1943 and attended schools in Liberal. He graduated from Liberal High School in 1949.

He served his country in the U.S. Air Force for four years during the Korean Conflict.

He was employed at Monsanto Chemical Plant in Alvin as a computer engineer for 34 years until his retirement in 1985.

Other survivors include his mother, Atwater, Calif.; three sons, Terry Penner, Steve Penner and Kevin Penner and wife, Karen; one daughter Rene Bolen and husband, Russell; one sister, Bonnie Jenkins and husband, Jim, Atwater; and six grandchildren, Amy Hatfield, Jason Hatfield, Jamie Penner, Kevin John Penner Jr., Naomie Penner and Katherine Penner.

He was preceded in death by his father; one brother, Melvin Penner; and one sister, Barbara Gustason.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Oct. 19 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Alvin with the Rev. Jack Franko presiding.

Burial followed at Resurrection Cemetery in Pearland, Texas.

Friendswood Funeral Home in Friendswood, Texas, was in charge of arrangements.

GLADYS E. HARTLEY

MEADE -- Gladys E. Hartley, 95, former Meade resident, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at the Prairie House Living Center in Plainview, Texas.

She was born April 24, 1907, to the Rev. D.M. and Minerva Ann (Nelson) Strickland in Abilene, Texas.

She married Lester Alton "L.A." Hartley Aug. 4, 1932, in Shawnee, Okla. He died Jan. 8, 1988.

She was a resident of Meade since 1945 before moving to Plainview.

She was the former owner of the Gambles Store in Meade. She was a school teacher and social worker for the state of Kansas.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, P.E.O. Chapter A, and a former member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, all in Meade.

Survivors include numerous nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Meade with the Rev. Harry Fink presiding.

Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Meade.

Friends may call until 7 p.m. today at Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade.

Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church or the charity of donor's choice in care of Fidler-Orme Mortuary, P.O. Box 70, 212 S. Fowler St., Meade, KS 67864.

ARTHUR M. KJERGAARD

ELKHART -- Arthur M. Kjergaard, 74, former Elkhart resident, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at Morton County Hospital in Elkhart.

He was born June 16, 1928, to Albert and Gladys (Johnson) Kjergaard in Bruce, Minn.

He married Verna Lee Oliver Sept. 16, 1955, in Great Lakes, Ill. She survives.

He spent his early years in Bruce, Minn., and Rowena, S.D., where he attended and graduated high school. He attended Tampa College in Tampa, Fla., where he earned his associate's degree.

He was a retired United States Navy Corpman, serving in both the Korean Conflict and Vietnam Conflict.

After his service in the military, he spent his time as director of laboratories for various hospitals including in Kansas, Florida, Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri. He volunteered for numerous school related activities in St. Petersburgh, Fla. He was also active in foster parenting in Florida, Missouri and Kansas.

He was a member of D.A.V., American Society of Medical Technologist, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Elkhart and Fleet Reserve Association.

His hobbies included bowling, fishing and collecting.

Other survivors include one son, Mel Kjergaard and wife, Kim, Denver; two daughters, Valerie Thrall and husband, Lynn, and Krista Golay and husband, Michael, all of Elkhart; two brothers, Hans Kjergaard and Marvin Kjergaard, both of South Dakota; and three granddaughters, Tara, Lyndie and Michaela.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Elkhart with the Pastor Jim Cunningham presiding.

Burial will be at Elkhart Cemetery in Elkhart. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Elkhart Area Veterans Honor Guard Post No. 3162.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Elkhart Elementary School in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 514 N. Kansas Ave., Elkhart, KS 67950.

BERTHA L. DRIVER

MODESTO, Calif. -- Bertha Levon Driver, 95, former Liberal resident, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.

She was born Oct. 17, 1907, to Birt and Lieu (Nelson) Tucker in Seward County.

She married Rheubeen Doah Driver. He preceded her in death.

She graduated from Liberal High School in 1927.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Liberal.

She was a resident of Modesto since 1947.

Survivors include one sister, Margarette Goos, Liberal; one cousin, Lorraine Hanlin, Hugoton; and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and four sisters.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Oaklawn, Calif.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel in Modesto.
