CATHERINE J. HICKS

Catherine Jean Hicks, 51, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at her home in Liberal.

She was born Jan. 21, 1951, to Alfred A. and Louise (Lauber) Dreher in Garden City.

She married Ralph E. Hicks April 4, 1981, in Wichita. He survives.

She and her husband moved from Phillipsburg to Liberal in 1988.

She was a homemaker.

Her hobbies included crocheting, needlework, making crafts and spending time with her family.

Other survivors include step-mother, Anna Dreher, Park City; one step-son, M.C. Hicks and wife, Cathy, El Dorado; one step-daughter, Edi Logan, El Dorado; one brother, Ben Dreher, El Dorado; three sisters, Jackie Hoag, El Dorado, Nancy Gordon, Albuquerque, N.M., and Teresa Kralachec, Colorado Springs, Colo.; one step-brother, Harold Stout, Park City; three grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Alfred A. Dreher Jr.; and one step-son-in-law, David Logan.

Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Christian Heritage Church, 701 S. Pershing, in Liberal with Todd Barnett presiding.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. today at Haskell County Funeral Home in Sublette.

HOLMES C. BENDER

PLAINS -- Holmes Carol Bender, 74, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at Wesley Select Care Hospital in Wichita.

He was born June 17, 1928, to Herman Christian and Glessie Ellen (Holmes) Bender in Liberal.

He married Etta Geneal King Nov. 15, 1959, in Denver, Colo. She died Feb. 22, 1984.

He was a lifetime resident of Plains and graduated from Plains High School in 1946. He attended Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla., where he was a member of the basketball team, playing for Henry P. Iba. In 1950, he received a bachelor of science in animal husbandry from OSU.

Upon his graduation from college, he entered into the United States Army, serving in Germany. After his discharge, he returned to Plains to farm.

He was a member of United Methodist Church, Plains Masonic Lodge 367 A.F. & A.M. and Plains Lions Club, all in Plains. He was active in many civic activities and had served as mayor of Plains.

Survivors include one son, Clair Bender and wife, June, Plains; one daughter, Carolyn Faye Gordon and husband, Ron, Tulsa, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Kristen and Ashley Bender, Mitchell and Marie Gordon, and Shannon, Stephen and Lesley Vermillion; and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Calista Garey and Welcome Orr.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Plains with the Rev. Nathan Stanton presiding.

Burial will be at Plains Cemetery in Plains.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade.

Memorials are suggested to United Methodist Church or National Kidney Foundation in care of Fidler-Orme Mortuary, P.O. Box 70, 212 S. Fowler St. Meade, KS 67864.

DONNA CUMMINS

Donna Cummins, 74, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at her residence in Liberal.

She was born April 8, 1928, to Howell and Ethel (Bennett) Lusk in Waverly.

She married Howard Cummins Nov. 6, 1949 in Olathe. He survives.

She was a graduate of Wellsville High School in Wellsville.

She had been a resident of Liberal since 1960.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, P.E.O., Liberal Country Club, Kansas Women's Golf Association, and Ninety Nines Women Pilot Organization.

Her hobbies included golf.

Survivors include husband, Dr. Howard Cummins, of the home; one son, Hal Cummins and wife, Patti, Coppell, Texas; three daughters, Dr. Christine Jones, Leadville, Colo., Sandi Yankee, Dallas, Texas, and Kathy Stauffer and husband, Jim, Clarkston, Mich.; one brother, Gene Lusk and wife, Doris, Livingston, Texas; one sister, Lorene Altmann, Wichita; six grandchildren, Michael Stauffer, Jody Jones, Megan Yankee, Garrett Stauffer, Patrick Cummins and Rachel Cummins; three nephews, Jeff Altman, Lee Lusk and Bryan Cummins.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Liberal with the Revs. Ann Holman and Ken Hathaway presiding.

Burial will be at Liberal Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral home in Liberal. Family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to A.L.S. Association Keith Worthington Chapter in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 W. 2nd, Liberal, KS 67901.

MILDRED A. ROEHR

PLAINS -- Mildred A. Roehr, 89, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at Wheatridge Care Center in Liberal.

She was born Feb. 16, 1913, to Fredrick and Clara (Behnke) Reiss in Lyons.

She married Vergil E. Roehr Oct. 16, 1935, in Plains. He died Dec. 10, 1985.

She was a 1932 graduate of Plains High School.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Plains United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Norman Roehr and wife, Jan, and Larry Roehr and wife, Roma Ann, all of Kismet; one daughter, Elaine Newlon and husband, John, Liberal; 12 grandchildren, Bruce Roehr, Kirk Roehr and wife, Valerie, Roger Roehr and wife, Mary, all of Kismet, Rachel Speer and husband, Anthony, Andover, Paula Correll and husband, Rick, Scottsdale, Ariz., Melinda Scantlin and husband, Marc, Urbandale, Iowa, Cami Roehr, Olathe, Jeff Newlon and wife, Vicky, Liberal, Kim Clinkingbeard and husband, Shon, Hugoton, Lori Ernst and husband, Paul, Prairie Village, Teri Moore and husband, Rick, and Rob Robey and wife, Joni, all of Council Bluff, Iowa; and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Marvin Reiss; and one great-granddaughter, Candace Correll.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Plains United Methodist Church with the Rev. Nathan Stanton presiding.

Burial will follow at Liberal Cemetery.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 5-9 p.m. Thursday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal. The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

ERMA F. PETERSON

HUGOTON -- Erma F. Peterson, 84, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at Morton County Care Center in Elkhart.

She was born Oct. 6, 1918, to Alfred and Cecil (Rose) Hendricks in Alva, Okla.

She married Leslie E. Peterson Oct. 9, 1942. He died Aug. 6, 1997.

She was a graduate of Alva High School and Northwestern State College in Alva.

She was a teacher, secretary and homemaker.

She was a member of First Christian Church and the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary Post 5391, both in Hugoton.

Her hobbies included sewing, cooking, gardening and reading.

Survivors include one brother, Dean Hendricks, Edmond; and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was also preceded in death by one brother; and one sister.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Hugoton with the Rev. Jeff Aenk presiding.

Burial will follow at Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Hugoton.

Memorials are suggested to the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary of Hugoton Post 5391 in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 432 S. Main, Hugoton, KS 67951.

HERBERT N. GILLEN

ULYSSES -- Herbert "Herb" N. Gillen, 77, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at his home in Ulysses.

He was born Aug. 21, 1925, to Marion Timothy and Martha Viola (Benson) Gillen in Canon City, Colo.

He married Lorina M. Witty Aug. 30, 1948, in Adrian, Ore. She survives.

He earned a master's degree in music education.

He served his country in the Unites States Army Air Force during World War II as an air traffic controller in the Pacific Theater.

He taught in Bloom for four years and in Ford for four years. He taught as a band instructor in Ulysses from fall 1957 to spring 1985 when he retired.

He had a Bible study group meet every week in his home. He was a Ham radio operator.

He was a member of Ulysses Mennonite Brethren Church and Cornerstone Bible Church, both in Ulysses; and Kansas Music Educators Association. He was an adult Sunday School teacher for many years. He was a past Silver-Haired Legislator, branch manager of Southwest Government Employees Credit Union, past insurance adjuster for the Mennonite Property Aid Association, past choir director for the Christian Church, past secretary-treasurer for the Ulysses Bowling League and owner-operator of Gillen Tax Service, all in Ulysses.

His hobbies included computers, model airplanes and bowling.

Other survivors include three sons, Bruce Gillen and wife, Rhonda, Edgewood, N.M., Richard Gillen, Ontario, Ore., and John Gillen and wife, P.J., Ulysses; four daughters, Barbara Moore and husband, Marvin, Farmington, N.M., Colleen Harms, Ulysses, Alice Borja and husband, Armando, North Glenn, Colo., and Shari Howard and husband, Bill, Las Cruces, N.M.; one brother, Jimmy Gillen and wife, Martha, Longmont, Colo.; two sisters, June Gehringer and husband, John, Chicago, and Alice Scheiding and husband, Herman, San Jose, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Greg Harms, Trisha Harms, Mindy Harms, Jeff Harms, Allen Moore, Tim Gillen, John Gillen, Thomas Howard and Lauren Howard; and numerous other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant son, Herbert Bruce Gillen; two brothers, Timothy "Tim" and William "Billy" Gillen; one sister, Margaret Jane Gillen; and one son-in-law, Jim Harms.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ulysses Mennonite Brethren Church in Ulysses with the Pastors Nathan Gift, Barry Durkee and David Kliewer presiding.

Burial will be at Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Grant County Funeral Home in Ulysses.

Memorials are suggested to Ulysses Music Booster Club in Ulysses in care of Grant County Funeral Home, 218 S. Main, Ulysses, KS 67880.
