John Alfred Park, 69 of Fort Scott, Kansas died Saturday, June 5, 2010, at his home.
The family will receive friends from 6:00PM to 8:00PM Wednesday June 9 at Cheney Witt Chapel, Fort Scott, KS. Graveside service will be 3:00PM Thursday June 10, 2010 at Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Family will receive friends prior to the graveside service Thursday from 12 noon until leaving for the cemetery at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. John was born July 17, 1940 in Atchison, KS the son of J.B. “Shorty” and Mabel (Woolston) Park. He had worked as traffic manager for Arnour Conagra, sold real estate and worked as a machine operator for Ward Kraft in Fort Scott. He was a member of the Community of Christian Church. John was a past worship leader and deacon with the Baptist Church in Paola. He worked in the children’s church ministry in Fort Scott. His hobbies include carpentry, building and racing go carts, and listening to country and gospel music.
John married Nancy Jo Footit on June 12, 1964. She preceded him in death in 1986. He married Connie Mae Webb on August 7, 1988 in Rushville, MO, she survives of the home, additional survivors include five sons; Jeff (Vickie) Park, Louisburg, KS, David (Kelly) Park, Overland Park, Barry Park and fiancé Kaylie, Overland Park, KS, James Park, U.S. Army, Fort Polk, Louisiana and Donald Park, of the home; one daughter, Debbie ( Bryan) McClure, Fort Scott, KS; a sister Joyce Rains, Rushville, MO; ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Courtney N. Underwood, Jr., 86, of rural Atchison, passed away Saturday afternoon, May 29, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Alderson Cemetery, west of Atchison. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM, Tuesday at the funeral home. Courtney was born May 5, 1924 in Lancaster Township the son of the late Courtney N. and Lila (Chalfant) Underwood, Sr. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1942. Courtney was involved in agriculture his entire life. He was on the Soil Conservation Board, a clerk on the Good Intent School Board, District 12, was a member of the Farm Bureau, Atchison Co-op and he was a 3rd Degree Mason in the Active Masonic Lodge #158. Courtney enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting.
Courtney married Wanda C. Heyle on January 28, 1949 in Kansas City, KS. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son, Courtney Underwood III and his wife Joan, Atchison, KS; sisters, Shirley Auchard, Springfield, IL; Hope Underwood, Sun City, AZ; Gail Grill, Denver, CO; grandchildren, Jeremy (Julie) Underwood, Candi (Amos) Hale and Chris Underwood, all of Atchison, 2 great-grandchildren, Ethan Hale and Samuel Underwood and one more on the way.
Christine Irene Wippel-Petesch, 87, Atchison, KS, passed away, Thursday, May 27, 2010 at the Provena St. Mary’s Hospital, Kankakee, IL.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, June 5, 2010 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Bertrand LaNoue, OSB, as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery
south of Atchison. The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00 PM, Friday, June 4, 2010 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. There will be a parish rosary beginning at 7:30 PM. Christine was born September 7, 1922 in East Chicago, IN, the daughter of the late Samuel and Suzan (Hiza) Vania. She had worked in the kitchen at the Atchison Hospital and was a part owner of the Shannon Grocery Store. Christine thoroughly enjoyed time spent with her grandchildren.
Christine married Robert Wippel in 1941 in Kansas City, KS. He preceded her in death in 1991. She later married Matthew P. Petesch, Jr. on January 18, 1972. He preceded her in death on October 9, 2006. Survivors include her children, Robert Wippel and his wife, Yvonne, St. Joseph, MO; Mark Petesch and his wife, Darlene, Rutherford Glenn, VA; Marcia Ann and her husband, Brent McKinley, Sr., Burlingame, KS; Sharon Thompson and her husband, Don, Meriden, KS; Kenneth Robert Petesch, Topeka, KS; James Albert Petesch, Atchison, KS; Rosemary Hobbs and her husband, Bob, Hiawatha, KS; Sandra Elliot and her husband, Brian, Atchison, KS; Katherine Clem and her husband, John, Huron, KS; Betty Crayton, Kankakee, IL; Rose Williams and her husband, Ed, Valparaiso, IN; 22 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Roberta Maul; son-in-law, Richard Crayton, five grandchildren; brothers, Paul, Sam, Tom and John Vania; sisters, Ann Malanik, Sue Klepsch and Mildred Nemeth.
Laura Ellen Teare, 88, of Atchison, KS, passed away peacefully at Medicalodge of Atchison surrounded by her loving family on Friday, May 28, 2010.

Laura was born on January 30, 1922 in Atchison, the daughter of Leslie A. and Nina (Mikesll) Smith. She graduated from Atchison High School. Laura attended many church’s in her life, the last being Faith Bible Fellowship. Laura’s greatest love was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Laura was married to Daniel Teare. Laura passed away on her husband’s birthday and their wedding anniversary. Dan preceded Laura in death on December 1, 1999. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Les Smith; and a sister, Mary Jane Ross.
Laura is survived by one son, Ron Teare of Atchison; four grandchildren, Daniel Teare of Atchison, Megan (Scott) McGee of Shawnee, KS, Elizabeth (David) Gates of Easton, KS, and Rebecca Teare of Orlando, FL; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, George Smith, Granbury, TX; one sister, Martha Hopkins, La Mesa, CA.
Ralph Charles 'Chuck' Smith, 64, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away, May 22, 2010 in Indianapolis.

in Muscotah, Kansas. Family will gather at 1:00 pm, Saturday, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison.
Chuck was born on August 9, 1945 in Colorado Springs, CO, the son of Ralph Paul and Josephine Mary (Brun) Smith. Chuck served in the US Marine Corps, which was a big part of his life. He served during the Vietnam War and received two purple hearts. Chuck was employed for 20 years at Hockett Motors in auto wholesales. He loved sports and the Indianapolis Colts. He was a free lance Big Brother.
Survivors include brothers, Thomas Paul Smith of Holton, KS, William Joseph Smith and Dwight W. Smith, both of Kansas City, MO; sisters, Nancy Perry of Rossville, KS, Michelle Minor of Lenexa, KS, Jennifer Wortham of Tucson, AZ.
Elmer L. Kuhnert, 81, of Rushville, MO, died Friday, August 27, 2010 at the Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, MO.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Robert Ziegler, Pastor of the Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Elmer Lee Kuhnert was born on Jan. 17, 1929 in Doniphan, KS, the son of Roy A. and Gertrude Marie (McBride) Kuhnert. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and returned home to farming. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, the American Legion Post # 6, the VFW Post # 1175, both of Atchison, the NRA and enjoyed farming, bowling, fishing, snowmobiling, collecting toy miniature tractors and his rat terrier dog- Lillie.
Elmer was married to Elizabeth Dame on Aug 26, 1955 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Elizabeth survives of the home. Additional survivors include; two sons, Randy Kuhnert, Atchison, KS., Jeff (Teri) Kuhnert, Rushville, MO., three daughters, Robyn (Greg) Wagner, Cummings, KS., Lisa (Ted) Hurst, Effingham, and Beth (Terry) Hamilton, Effingham, KS., a sister, Louise(Louie) Shockey, Atchison, KS., Ten grandchildren; Gabriel (Jennifer), Jacob (Dana), Lucas (Sarah)Wagner, Alison & Rebekah Kuhnert, Brooke & Jeanie Hurst, Austin, Sara and Evan Hamilton, and three great grandchildren, Hannah, Kori, and Emma Wagner. His parents, a brother, Roy Kuhnert, Jr., and a sister, Emma Jean Bramble preceded him in death.
Lloyd R. Vanwagoner, 69, of Atchison, passed away Sunday, August 22, 2010 at Heartland Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, August 26, 2010 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with Pastor Nicole Schwartz officiating. Burial will follow at Mt.Vernon Cemetery. There will be a Masonic and Eastern Star service at 6:00 PM Wednesday, August 25, 2010 followed by visitation until 9:00 PM. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, United Methodist Church or Masonic Home and may be left in care of the funeral home.
Lloyd was born August 2, 1941 the son of Lloyd Elmer and Augusta Edna (Boyd) Vanwagoner. Mr. Vanwagoner was a certified tig welder for Atchison Castings for forty-two years before retiring. He was a member of United Methodist Church, the Mason’s and Eastern Star. Lloyd enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping, watching old movies and westerns.
Lloyd Vanwagoner married Carol Maycroft June 6, 1964, she survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons, Richard (Shelly) Vanwagoner, Topeka, KS; Steve (Pam) Vanwagoner, Atchison, KS; one daughter, Maria (Chris) Lemonds, Blue Ridge, TX; two sisters, Dorothy (Pat) Parks, Rushville, MO; Edna( Leonard) Neimeyer, Grandbe, MO and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law; Bob Mckinnhen.
