BRUCE G. WHITHAM

SCOTT CITY -- Bruce G. Whitham, 76, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

He was born Dec. 21, 1925, to Ray Charles and Mable Garvin Whitham in Scott County.

He was a resident of Scott County until 1979, when he moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, and then back to Scott City in 1994.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1946 to 1947 during the occupation of Japan.

He was a retired carpenter, farmer and stockman.

He was a member of First Christian Church, VFW Post No. 7773, Anthem Masonic Lodge, VIP Center and Men's Christian Fellowship, all in Scott City.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol Nash, Rockford, Ill., and Jane Harding, Liberal; one brother, Charles Whitham, Leoti; one sister, Corinne Krebs, Scott City; one grandson, Brian Nash, Rockford; and three granddaughters, Angela Harding and Crystal Harding, both of Liberal, and Staci Nash, Rockford.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert Bruce Whitham; and one brother, Frank Whitham.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Scott City with the Rev. John Warring presiding.

Burial will be at Scott County Cemetery in Scott City.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 9-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Price and Sons Funeral Home in Scott City.

Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church in care of Price and Sons Funeral Home, 401 Washington, Scott City, KS 67871.

VIVIAN H. ETRICK

DODGE CITY -- Vivian Helene Box Etrick, 97, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Manor of the Plains in Dodge City.

She was born Sept. 5, 1905, in Kansas City, Mo.

She married Herbert Nahum Etrick in October 1927. He died Jan. 13, 1992.

She moved to Liberal in 1952 from Dodge City, returning to Dodge City in 1990.

She was the owner and operator of a women's retail clothing store in Liberal.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Dodge City, Soroptimist Club and was a member and state president in the 1980s of Business and Professional Women.

Survivors include two nephews, Paul Etrick, Wakeeney, and Joseph Etrick, Sacramento, Calif.; and three nieces, Karla Poteet, Dodge City, Mary Hanneman, Garden City and Sara Etrick, Overland Park.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel in Dodge City with the Rev. Dick Robbins presiding.

Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City.

Friends may sign the register from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to service time Friday at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church in care of Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.

WILLIAM J. BALDWIN

KISMET -- Dr. William J. "Bill" Baldwin, 83, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Presbyterian Manor in Wichita.

He was born May 15, 1919, to Jesse Alexander and Jessie Mae Cure Baldwin in Republic.

He married U. Bernell McNeill Oct. 10, 1940, in Republic. She survives.

He graduated from Labette Junior College. He received his bachelor's degree in economics from Sterling College in 1946. He received his master's degree from United Theological Seminary in 1949. He earned his doctorate of ministry degree from San Francisco Theological Seminary with a dissertation of "Education of the Teachable Mentally Retarded."

He served United Methodist churches in Kansas for 45 years.

He organized a three-county program for the mentally handicapped at Chanute.

He retired from serving churches in 1984 and moved to Newton. He drove a school bus for Newton School District for eight years and worked at Conklin Cars for several years.

He and his wife were the parsonage family at Kismet United Brethren Church in Kismet from 1949 to 1954.

He served on the board of Topeka Consolidation of Retarded Children and was involved with the Kansas Neurological Institute in Topeka. He was a 32nd degree mason. He was on the state committee that organized the Special Olympics in Kansas and the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters. He was supervisor of volunteers for Here to Hear of United Methodist Youthville.

He was a member of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school, substituted in the pulpit, conducted services and served on church boards.

Other survivors include one son, Phillip Baldwin, Wichita; three daughters, Janice Schaeffer, Milford, June Oliver, Wichita, and Joyce Denton, Hot Springs, Ariz.; and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Beuford; one sister, Swilda Ross; and one grandson.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Dec. 5 at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. Don Swender presiding.

Burial was at Restlawn Gardens of Memory in Newton.

Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton was in charge of arrangements.

DAVID CUPELL

David Cupell, 50, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center St. Francis in Wichita.

He was born Sept. 23, 1952, to JoEd and Anita (Williams) Cupell in Amarillo, Texas.

He married Connie Alexander May 26, 1972, in Hereford, Texas. She survives.

He was a 1971 graduate of Hereford High School in Hereford, Texas.

He had been a Liberal resident for five years, moving from Amarillo.

He had been in the trucking business with his father from 1971-1978. He then began working in truck sales and management with Freightliner and Kenworth. He was the general manager of Liberal Kenworth.

He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Amarillo. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Liberal and Believers Sunday School Class, and he helped with the AWANAS program for children.

Other survivors include his father, Amarillo; three daughters, Leigh Ann Glenn and husband, Jereme, Liberal, and twins, Ashlee and Amanda, of the home; one brother, Albert Cupell and wife, Pat, Amarillo; two sisters, JoAnn Stephens and husband, Jerry, Pampa, Texas, and Nita White, Amarillo; one grandson, Johnathon Glenn; and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Liberal with the Rev. David Bagwell presiding.

Burial will follow at Liberal Cemetery in Liberal.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 1-5 p.m. Sunday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Cupell Children Memorial Fund in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 W. Second St., Liberal, KS 67901.

DARYL E. WOODS

Daryl E. Woods, 78, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at his home in Liberal.

He was born May 18, 1924, to Lester and Anna Casteel Woods.

He married Helen R. Hoard July 5, 1947, in Clayton, N.M. She died Sept. 8, 1990.

He married Kathryn Rookuyzen May 10, 1991, in Clayton. She survives.

He came to Liberal in 1959 and was a partner at Mac-Wood Mud. He later founded and operated the Mid-West Mud Company and the U.S. Chemical Co. until his retirement.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy for eight years.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Guthrie Consistory and Shrine, all in Oklahoma, and the Southwest Shrine Club and VFW Post No. 1203, both in Liberal.

Other survivors include three step-daughters, Jody Hehmsoth and Jan Peterson-Hockey, both of Austin, Texas, and Kathy Clay, Grand Prairie, Texas; and one brother, Forest "Frosty" Woods, Vancouver, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. today at Miller Chapel in Liberal with the Rev. Rex Petty presiding. The casket remained closed.

Burial was at Liberal Cemetery in Liberal with military honors by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association in care of Miller Mortuary, 908 N. Lincoln, Liberal, KS 67905.

MARIA MARTINEZ

Maria "Corrine" Bedford Martinez, 68, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center St Francis in Wichita.

She was born June 11, 1934, to Jesus and Escolastica (Gonzales) Arellano in Pasamonte, N.M.

She married Nabor Martinez March 16, 1978, in Liberal. He survives.

She had been a resident of Liberal for the past 37 years, having moved from Clayton, N.M.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Liberal.

Other survivors include five sons, Eldon Bedford and Dennis Bedford, both of Wichita, Curtis Bedford, Enid, Okla., Leslie Bedford, Augusta, and Mondel Anthony, Liberal; five daughters, Linda Barboza, Wichita, Penny Guerro, Hurst, Texas, and Bonnie Jeannette Castillo, Kathy Bedford, and Sheila Duran, all of Liberal; three sisters, Frances Ward, Hurst, Elsie Romero, Santa Fe, N.M., and Ophelia Vigil, Clayton; 22 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, William Cody Bedford; three brothers, Fermin, Joe Ben, and Billy Arellano; one sister, Josie Goff; and one granddaughter, Rachael Marie Duran.

Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Liberal with the Deacon Ruben Sigala presiding.

Funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Anthony Catholic Church with the Father Patrick Keyes presiding.

Burial will be at Restlawn Cemetery in Liberal.

Friends may call from 1-5 today at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal and from 9 a.m. to service time Monday at St. Anthony Catholic Church.

Memorials are suggested to Corrine Bedford Martinez Memorial Fund in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 W 2nd, Liberal KS 67901.
