JOHN NIGHTENGALE

MONTEZUMA -- John Nightengale, 84, died Nov. 16, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Sept. 1, 1919, to Abraham and Elizabeth (Wedel) Nightengale in Tampa.

He married Hazel Unruh April 10, 1945, in Montezuma. She died July 21, 1977.

He was a farmer. He was a member of Lakin Mennonite Church in Lakin.

Survivors include three daughters, Joyleen Nightengale, Merced, Calif., Jewell Unruh and husband, Donald, Scott City; Connie Koehn and Husband, Don, Okolona, Miss.; two brothers, Emil Nightengale and wife, Lorena, Montezuma, Ervin Nightengale and wife, Juanita, Scott City; one sister, Leona Spence, Glenn, Calif.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. at Salem Mennonite Church in Copeland with the ministers Charles Nightengale, Ray Frank, Ron Ensz and Sam Unruh Jr. presiding.

Burial will be at the Salem Mennonite Cemetery in Copeland.

Friends may call Montezuma Funeral Home from noon until 8 p.m. on Tuesday and 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

ATHENE BODAM

ULYSSES -- Athene Bodam, 85, died Nov. 16, 2003, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.

She was born May 1, 1918, to Noah E. and Blanche (Eaton) Hoyt in McFall, Mo.

She married W.D. (Willard) Bodam May 31, 1936, in Lakin. He died April 4, 2001.

She graduated from Lakin High School in 1937.

She worked at JC Penney in Garden City, where she did alterations and was an office clerk. She retired in 1978.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

She enjoyed coordinating the weekly bridge games at the Finney County Senior Center.

Survivors include thee daughters, Phyllis Jean Harkness, Dodge City, Virginia Louise Johnson, Garden City and Cynthia Anne Armstrong, Ulysses; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Ulysses with the Bishop Ron Hale presiding.

Burial will be at Lakin Cemetery in Lakin.

Friends may call the Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Memorials are suggested to Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

CAROL JEAN DIRKS HEINLEIN

HUTCHINSON -- Carol Jean Dirks Heinlein, 51, died Nov. 17, 2003, at her home in Hutchinson.

She was born May 1, 1952, to Leonard and Phyllis (Marshall) Dirks in Hutchinson.

She was a lifetime Hugoton resident and graduate of Buhler High School. She was a Human Resource Manager for Jackson Dairy.

She was a member of Crestview Bible Church.

Survivors include two sons, Max Heinlein and wife, D'ana, Hutchinson, and Jeff Heinlein, Hutchinson; one daughter, Leslie Garner and husband, Jeremiah, Hutchinson; her father and stepmother, Donna Dirks, Hutchinson; two sisters, Jo Martin, Salina, and Jan Moore, Emporia; one step-brother, Steve Harper, Hutchinson; three grandchildren, Carsyn and Mariah Heinlein, and Eva Garner.

She was preceded in death by her mother, and one grandson, Ethan Logan Garner.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Crestview Bible Church in Hutchinson with the Pastor Brian Albert presiding.

Burial will be at the Buhler Municipal Cemetery in Buhler.

Friends may call until 9 p.m. Tuesday at Elliot Mortuary in Hutchinson.

Memorials are suggested to the Crestview Bible Church, Hospice of Reno County and Hutchinson Area Cancer Center, Chapter of Victory in the Valley in care of Elliot Mortuary in Hutchinson.

JESSE E. MANN

Jesse E. Mann, 82, died Nov. 17, 2003, at his rural home in Hugoton.

He was born Nov. 7, 1921, to Burton D. and Hazel C. Dunham Mann in Liberal.

He married Thelma W. Pruett Nov. 7, 1944, in Norfolk,Va. She died March 1, 1995.

He graduated from Liberal High School in 1939. He was a mechanic at the Cimarron Motor Company for several years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy. He returned to Stevens County in 1948, and was a lifelong farmer.

Survivors include three sons, Tom Mann and wife, Shurlene, Dodge City, James Mann and wife, Peggy, Olathe, and Burton Mann and wife, Liz, Liberal; two daughters, Susan Peters and husband, Ernie, Muscatine, Iowa, and Sally Adee and husband, Les, Hugoton; one brother, Howard Mann and wife, Faye, Wichita; one sister, Marie Sellinger, Liberal; one brother-in-law, Thomas Pruett, Norfolk, Va.; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded by his parents and one daughter, Linda Mann.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Lone Star Friends Church in rural Hugoton with the Pastor David Hearon presiding.

Burial will be at a later date at the Liberal Cemetery in Liberal.

Friends may call the until 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 to 11 a.m. Thursday.

Memorials are suggested to the Lone Star Friends Church Building Fund or to the Diabetes Association in care of the mortuary.

JESSE CURTIS SCHMIDT

MONTEZUMA -- Jesse Curtis Schmidt, 88, died Nov. 19, 2003, at Bethel Home Inc., in Montezuma.

He was born Feb. 7, 1915, to Benjamin D. and Susie (Unruh) Schmidt in Las Animas, Colo.

He married Frances Yost April 23, 1939, in Montezuma. She survives.

He was a farmer and rancher.

He was a member of the Church of God in Christ Mennonite in Montezuma.

Other survivors include five sons, Elwin Schmidt and wife, Priscilla, Clarksdale, Miss., Laurel Schmidt and wife, Carolyn, Barnett, Mo., Kenneth Schmidt and wife, Anita, Montezuma, Robert Schmidt and wife Ardith, Alligator, Miss., David Schmidt and wife, Virgina, Montezuma; three daughters, Arlene Koehn, and husband , Rodney, Montezuma, Ruth Schmidt, Montezuma, Carolyn Yost and husband, David, Moundridge; five brothers, Elmer Schmidt, Montezuma, Edwin Schmidt and wife, Dorothy, Montezuma, Harry Schmidt and wife, Stella, Montezuma, John Schmidt, Montezuma, Ben Schmidt, Montezuma; six sisters, Mable Koehn, Ingalls, Hannah Koehn, Montezuma, Luella Harms, Montezuma, Dessie Koehn, Montezuma, Elizabeth Koehn, Montezuma, Irene Koehn and husband, Norman, Victoria, Texas; 32 grandchildren, 28 grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Leona Yost; one great-granddaughter, Christina Martin.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. at Church of God in Christ Mennonite in Montezuma.

Burial will be at North Mennonite Cemetery in Montezuma.

Friends may call the Montezuma Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday and from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Friday.

Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc., in Montezuma in care of Montezuma Funeral Home, P.O. Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

EDWIN A. BUCHER JR.

FOWLER -- Edwin A. Bucher Jr., 69, died Nov. 15, 2003, in Kentucky.

He was born July 30, 1934, to Edwin and Julia Bucher in St. Louis, Mo.

He married Angela Agnes Wrotney in 1954 in Plains. She died in 1980.

He then married Joyce Gatlin in 1987. She died Nov. 15, 2003.

Survivors include two daughters, Julie Foss and husband, John, Turpin, Okla., and Vicki Mirt and husband, Nelson, Dodge City; two sons, Mike Bucher, Quinter, and Dan Bucher and wife, Mary Lou, Rolla; one sister, Dorothy Langella and husband, Tom, St. Louis, Mo.; 10 grandchildren and numerous nephews, nieces and friends.

Memorial services are pending at Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

ADELINE I. KOEHN

ULYSSES -- Adeline I. Koehn, 89, died Nov. 19, 2003, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

She was born to Cornelius H. and Eva (Koehn) Koehn Nov. 26, 1913, in Fairview, Okla.

She married Henry A. Koehn Jan. 20, 1935, in Montezuma. He died Feb. 8, 1998.

She was a homemaker. She moved into Bethel Home Inc. in Montezuma Jan. 29, 2003.

Her hobbies included gardening, quilting and puzzles.

Survivors include five sons, Thomas Koehn and wife, Ruth, Ulysses, Bob Koehn and wife, Elva, Ulysses, Glenn Koehn and wife, Glennis, Wilcox, Ariz., Russell Koehn and wife, Winona, Ulysses, Dale Koehn and wife, Mary Beth, Ulysses; five daughters, Inez Yost and husband, Earl, Irquois, S.D., JoAnn Nichols and husband, Milton, Elkton, S.D., Patricia Jantz and husband, Ben, Detroit, Texas, Deloris Giesbrecht and husband, Galen, Texhoma, Okla., Dianna Ratzlaff and husband, Darrell, Wilcox, Ariz.; 50 grandchildren, 153 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Juanita Nightingale; her parents; one brother, Lewis Koehn, two sisters, Edna Koehn and Susie Eck; one son-in-law, Franklin Nightingale; one daughter-in-law, Bernice Koehn; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

* Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Grant Mennonite Church in Ulysses with the Ministers Denton Koehn, Stuart Jantzen and Brad Koehn presiding.

Burial will be at the Grant Mennonite Cemetery in Ulysses.

Friends may call until 2 p.m. and from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Grant County Funeral Home in Ulysses is in charge of arrangements.
