John W. Axelson
Funeral for John W. Axelson, 70, of Natoma, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Plainville, with the Rev. George McGregor officiating. Burial will be in Natoma City Cemetery.
Mr. Axelson died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.
He was born Jan. 20, 1930, at Plainville, the son of George and Mabel (Clements) Axelson.
A lifetime resident of the Plainville and Natoma areas, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, worked with his father and family in the George Axelson and Sons Oil Field Tank Trucking business, and had owned and operated his own business, Axelson Tank Service, since 1971.
On Nov. 13, 1950, he married Wendella Matheson at Natoma. She survives. Other survivors are a son, Kevin Axelson, Garden City; two daughters, Pam Launchbaugh, Pratt, and Kathy Raney, Rose Hill; three brothers, George Axelson, Great Bend, Robert Axelson, Plainville, and Ron Axelson, Russell; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight at Pohlman's Mortuary, Natoma, and from 10 a.m. to service time Thursday at the church in Plainville. Memorials are suggested to the Ronald McDonald House, Wichita, in care of the mortuary, 701 N. First St., Natoma, KS 67651.
Rafael Sanchez Almaraz
HOLCOMB -- Spanish rosary for Rafael Sanchez Almaraz, 49, will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Another service and burial will take place later in Hidalgo, Mexico.
Mr. Almaraz died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at his home in Holcomb.
He was born Oct. 24, 1950, at Francisco-Madero, Zimapan, Hidalgo, the son of Prisciliano and Librada Sanchez Resendiz Almaraz.
A Holcomb resident since 1974, moving from Texas, he previously lived in Lakin, Deerfield and Garden City. He was a truck driver for Pappas Concrete for five years, and had worked for Hinkle Drilling and Supply Co. for 19 years.
Mr. Almaraz was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the G.I. Forum. His hobbies were spending time with his grandchildren and family, dancing and collecting ball caps.
On July 28, 1974, he married Sonia M. Gloria at Garden City. She died July 13, 1995. He was also preceded in death by a son, Cristobal A. Almaraz; and a brother.
He is survived by a son, Rafael S. Almaraz Jr., Salina; two daughters, Yesenia A. Casas, Salina, and America R. Almaraz, Garden City; his companion, Midge Encinias, Holcomb; a stepdaughter, Hope Varela, Salina; his mother, Hidalgo; a brother, Armando Almaraz, Holcomb; two sisters, Carmen Resendiz, Hidalgo, and Cristina Almaraz, Mexico City; a stepbrother, Pedro Almaraz, Florida; two stepsisters, Nicolasa Almaraz and Agripina Almaraz, both of Mexico; and three grandsons.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, in care of the funeral home.
Esther E. Watson
LEOTI -- Funeral for Esther E. Watson, 86, will be 9 a.m. CST Saturday at First Baptist Church, Leoti, with the Rev. Rick Woolard officiating. Graveside service will be 1 p.m. MST Saturday in Fowler (Colo.) Cemetery.
Mrs. Watson died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at Wichita County Hospital in Leoti.
She was born May 9, 1913, at Americus, the daughter of Henry O. and Lou D. (Query) Hysom.
A homemaker, she had served as a waitress for many years in the Rocky Ford and Fowler areas in Colorado. She was a member of First Baptist Church at Rocky Ford and the Atkinson Senior Citizens Center at Leoti.
On Aug. 15, 1931, she married Harold James Watson at Colorado Springs. He died in November 1987 at La Junta, Colo. She was also preceded in death by a son, William Lee "Bill" Watson; four brothers; and five sisters, one of which was her twin sister.
She is survived by a daughter, Donna McKinney, Leoti; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 9 tonight and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials are suggested to the Wichita County Health Center, in care of the funeral home.
Tanner Lee Stowe
Memorial service for Tanner Lee Stowe, the infant son of Lee C. and Patricia Ann (McKenna) Stowe of Garden City, will be 10 a.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. James Baker officiating. Burial will take place later.
Tanner was stillborn Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a half sister, Amanda Stowe, Yoder, Colo.; his grandparents, Barbara McKenna, Garden City, Dan McKenna and Eliane Stowe, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; his great-grandmothers, Winona Holzmeister, Salina, and Wanda Clapp, West New York, N.J.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Lee C. Stowe; and his great-grandfathers.
There will be no visitation. Memorials to the Tanner Lee Stowe Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Billy Eugene Sowles
Funeral for Billy Eugene Sowles, 50, of Great Bend, was 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bryant-Christians Chapel, Great Bend. Graveside service was 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Stafford Cemetery, Stafford.
Mr. Sowles died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at his home.
He was born Dec. 29, 1949, at Stafford, the son of George William and Naomi B. (Bowman) Sowles.
A Great Bend resident for most of his life, Mr. Sowles was a production foreman for Abercrombie Energy, L.L.C. He belonged to the American Legion Argonne Post No. 180 S.A.L.
On Dec. 31, 1967, he married Sarah E. Hoener at Great Bend. She survives.
He is also survived by a son, William W. Sowles, Plainville; a daughter, Susan L. Robertson, Shawnee; his mother, Great Bend; a brother, Kenneth L. Sowles, Chandler, Ariz.; two sisters, Sandra S. Spires, Garden City, and Barbara A. Moos, Hays; five grandchildren; and two nieces.

Blanche Carver
SCOTT CITY -- Blanche Carver, 90, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Hays Medical Center, Hays.
She was born Dec. 8, 1909, in Scott County, the daughter of Olney and Jennie (Piper) Silvey.
A lifetime resident of Scott and Wichita counties, she taught in rural schools there for more than 30 years and was a farmer's wife. She and Eugene Francis Carver were married May 9, 1948, at Scott City. He died Oct. 25, 1995, at Wichita. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Glen Silvey.
Mrs. Carver had resided at Park Place Apartments for the past four years. She was a member of First Christian Church and the CWF church group, both at Scott City, Sunflower Unit of Retired Teachers at Garden City, and the Modoc Sewing Group of Modoc.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda Lang, Hays; and two granddaughters.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Park Place Apartments, both in care of the funeral home.
