Mary Warner

ARKANSAS CITY – Mary Margaret Warner, 90, of Arkansas City, died May 31, 2002, at Presbyterian Manor Health Care Unit in Arkansas City.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at St. Paul United Methodist Church. The Rev. Gordan Tasker will officiate. Private burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

Friends may call at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials have been established with St. Paul United Methodist Church and Southwestern College. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Warner was born Dec. 7, 1911, in Oxford, to Ida (Turpin) and Nick Damett. She attended school in Oxford and continued her education at Southwestern College where she was elected to the Order of the Mound and Pi Kappa Delta. She taught high school in Oxford and Geuda Springs.

On June 6, 1943, she married Merle C. Warner in Oxford. They made their home on a farm southwest of Geuda Springs, and she continued to teach for several years after the marriage.

Her husband died on Aug. 7, 1977, and she moved to Arkansas City in 1979. A member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Warner taught the Gleaners Sunday school class and was a lay speaker in the church. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge and for many years a member of the Walton Homemakers Unit. She was a member of the Arkansas City and National retired teachers associations and a life member of the Kansas Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include a son, Nicholas S. Warner, Hutchinson; a daughter, Bobetta M. Hagerty, Kansas City; and two grandchildren.

Edna Gall

WICHITA – Edna K. (Kindt) Schroedel Gall, 96, of Wichita, died May 30, 2002, at the Life Care Center in Wichita.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Hillside Funeral Home East Chapel. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Highland Cemetery at Winfield.

The family suggests memorial gifts to the Holy Cross Lutheran Church Building Fund, 600 N. Greenwich Road, Wichita, KS 67206-2633, or Lutheran Hour Ministries, 660 Mason Ridge Center Drive, St. Louis, MO 63141-8557.

Gall was born Aug. 29, 1905, in Garfield City, Okla., to Cristene (Peters) and Oscar J. Kindt.

She was a former secretary to a dean at Southwestern College.

Her first husband, Paul Schroedel, her second husband, Edward Gall, and a daughter, Eva Jeanette Schroedel Saenger, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary White, Wichita; a sister, Fern Traugott, Hot Springs Village, Ark.; a sister-in-law, Hazel Kindt, Winfield; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Jonie Pitts

OXFORD – Services for Jonie Jene Phillips Pitts were held at 11 a.m. June 1, 2002, at Oxford Christian Church. The Rev. Danny Ginn officiated. Burial was at 3 p.m. in the Kingfisher, Okla., cemetery.

Shirley Slack was the pianist. Music included recordings of “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” by Vince Gill, “Movin' On,” by Rascal Flatts, and “You Are the Wind Beneath My Wings,” by Bette Midler.

Honorary casket bearers were Nyla and Jennifer Sawyer, Betty Oliver, Karen Cox, Karen Stacy and Jennifer Henderson.

A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.

Oxford Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Boyd Waite

ARKANSAS CITY – O. Boyd Waite, 92, lifetime resident of Cowley County, died June 1, 2002, at Presbyterian Manor in Arkansas City.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery west of Winfield.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. The family will greet visitors from 7 to 8.

A memorial has been established with the Winfield FFA Chapter. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Waite was born Feb. 15, 1910, on the family farm northwest of Winfield, to Charity B. (Hamlin) and Leon A. Waite. He attended Red Top School and graduated from Winfield High School in 1929.

On July 24, 1932, he married Delores Williams at Burden. They made their home on the Walnut Valley Hereford Ranch, the family farm, throughout their marriage.

Waite showed cattle and had production sales for many years. He and his brother, Kenneth, ran the farm and cattle operation. His sons bought the operation when he retired.

Waite was a member of the Kansas and Cowley County Hereford associations and served Future Farmers of America as first president and first national officer from Kansas and as a member of the livestock judging team. For many years he was on the Cowley County Fair Board and was the 4-H livestock sales manager.

Waite was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

In 1996, he moved to Presbyterian Manor.

A son, Larry Boyd Waite, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Delores Waite, and a son, Dwaine Waite, both of Winfield; a daughter, Maxine Rusk, Sun City; seven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Clara Young

OXFORD – Services for Clara Francis Young were held at 2 p.m. June 3, 2002, at Oxford Funeral Service. The Revs. L. Ray Young and Jay Lewis officiated. Cecilia Young, vocalist, provided special music, accompanied by Phyllis Hearn.

Burial was in Conway Springs Cemetery. Members of Queen City Chapter 138 Order of Eastern Star performed Eastern Star services.

Casket bearers were Larry Young, Randy and Chad Kingsley, Jason and Daniel Frazier and Gary Allred.

Grace Carlton

WICHITA – Grace Mildred (Lively) Carlton, 83, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, retired Boeing Aircraft assembly worker, died June 3, 2002.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Union Cemetery in Winfield. Hillside Funeral Home West is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Meridian Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 1555 N. Meridian, Wichita, KS 67203, or Heartland Home Health Care & Hospice, 1410 N. Woodlawn, Derby, KS 67037.

Carlton was born June 9, 1918, in Winfield, to Catherine (Scott) and Ben Lively. She married Elmer H. Carlton in 1939.

A son, Elmer H. Carlton Jr., preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Elmer H. Carlton Sr., Wichita; a sister, Mable Huff, Winfield; a granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.

Glenn Calvin

Glenn R. Calvin, 76, of Winfield, died June 2, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Akron Cemetery north of Winfield.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. The family will greet visitors from 7 to 8.

Calvin was born Jan. 24, 1926, in Winfield, to Hildreth Marie (Ritchie) and Reuel Fulton Calvin. He was raised and educated in Winfield. During high school he was drafted into the military.

He entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served on the USS Steamer Bay in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

After he returned to Winfield, Calvin married Joyce C. Garoutte. They later divorced.

Calvin worked for Winfield Lumber Yard until 1954. He later lived in Tribune, Syracuse and Dodge City where he worked for various lumber companies. After retiring in 1992 he moved to Liberal and returned to Winfield in 1999.

Calvin was a member of the First Baptist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Winfield Lodge 110 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons. He was a member of the Lions Club in Syracuse and the Rotary Club in Dodge City. He also volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

Survivors include two sons, Van R. Calvin, Wichita, and Danny G. Calvin, Sumner, Wash.; a brother, Harold Calvin, Belle Plaine; a sister, Norma Jean McDade, Winfield; six grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Duane Gere

Duane G. Gere, 78, longtime resident of Wichita, died June 3, 2002, at his daughter's home in Winfield.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in New Salem Cemetery, north of Winfield.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday. The family will greet visitors from 7 to 9.

A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice of Wichita. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Gere was born Feb. 5, 1924, in Aberdeen, S.D., to Irene (Smith) and Milo Gere. He was raised and educated in San Diego.

After high school he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps and served during World War II. After two and a half years, he was honorably discharged and returned to San Diego.

On Feb. 24, 1946, he married Ona Mae Jones in Yuma, Ariz.

Gere went into the dry cleaning business in San Diego. In 1962 he and his family moved to Wichita where he was owner-operator of Welch Cleaners until retiring in 1988.

His wife died Oct. 20, 1997. Due to failing health, he moved to Winfield to live with his daughter.

Gere was a member of the First Christian Church of Wichita and the Masons.

Survivors include his daughters, Pamela Toon, Winfield, and Melinda Anderson, Shreveport, La.; three sisters, Shirley Arbaugh, El Cajon, Calif., Betty Morris, Huntington Beach, Calif., and Gloria Sawade, Oceanside, Calif.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Alberta Schoen

Services for Alberta M. Schoen were held at 10:30 a.m. June 4, 2002, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Winfield. The Revs. Rick Hathaway and Evey Phillips officiated. Burial was at 3 p.m. in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia.

Music included “My Faith Looks Up to Thee” and “Children of the Heavenly Father.”

Honorary casket bearers were Dorine Martin, Pearl Townsend, Jean Swercinsky, Rosie Powell and Marie Winter.

Schoen's grandchildren served as casket bearers.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Concordia Lutheran Church or Hospice Care of Kansas of Winfield.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jodi Ann Burnsworth

OKLAHOMA CITY – Jodi Ann Burnsworth, 37, of Oklahoma City, formerly of Winfield, died June 1, 2002.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to any organization.

Burnsworth was born Oct. 15, 1964, in Winfield, to Sharon A. (Gill) and Linden L. Burnsworth. The family moved to Norman, Okla., in 1967, and she graduated from Norman High School in 1982.

She pursued a nursing career and worked for a doctor in Oklahoma City.

Survivors include her mother, Sharon A. Burnsworth, Norman; her father, Linden L. Burnsworth, and a sister, Halli A. Burnsworth, both of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; and her grandmothers, Maxine L. Burnsworth Grimes, Tucson, Ariz., and Helen Gill, Hays.
