Corps chief Clyde "Shorty' Steelman, helped develop U.S. space program
Clyde "Shorty" Steelman was involved in the birth of America's space program, working on the Saturn booster rocket system in the 1950s.
Mr. Steelman, 91, of Taylorsport in Boone County, died Sunday at his home.
"He liked to putter with almost any kind of machinery," said his wife, Betty M. Slayback Steelman. "He was interested in everything, whether it was in the air or water or land."
Mr. Steelman was a retired chief of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the Ohio and Kentucky rivers and a member of Hebron Baptist Church. He was a member of Hebron Masonic Lodge and a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Sea Bees.
His first wife, Marge Walker Steelman, died in 1968.
Mr. Steelman went to work at Fern Bank Dam No. 37 when he was 16. He became chief, supervising the closing of the lock system on the Kentucky River. In the mid-1950s, he was transferred to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala., to supervise the building of the test stand for the Saturn booster rocket, where he worked closely with famed scientist Wernher Von Braun.
In the early 1960s, he returned to Northern Kentucky and retired in 1968. He was called back as a consultant at age 80 to investigate reopening the locks on the Kentucky River. He spent the 1970s and 1980s as a tow boat operator with Morehead Boat Harbor in Taylorsport.
He and Mrs. Steelman liked to travel. They owned a motor home and were in Florida camping when the space shuttle Challenger exploded, his wife said.
He was an avid pilot and enjoyed woodworking.
Other survivors include a stepson, Charles Edward Slayback of Florence; stepdaughters, Rena Volpenhein of Ludlow, Charlene Mayes of Florence and Deborah Knox of Fayetteville, N.C.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Sherrie Allen, 57, of Woodlawn, died Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of Cincinnati Herb Society; Cincinnati Sewing Guild and Campbell County Homemakers.
Survivors include her husband, Lyle Allen; a son, Mark Allen of Highland Heights; a daughter, Melodie Schabell of Grants Lick; a sister, Bridgette Davis of Newport; and two grandchildren.

Ruby Haley Courtney, 82, of Union, died at 7:43 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Erlanger First Church of God; St. Luke Hospital West Auxiliary and Women of the Church of God. Her husband, Boyd Courtney, died in 1973.
Survivors include daughters, Diane Courtney and Peggy Ammon, both of Burlington; sons, Richard Courtney and Charles Courtney, both of Crittenden, Ben Courtney of Florence and Jerry Courtney of Dry Ridge; a sister, Mary Knight of Covington; 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Raymond E. Justice, 78, of Covington, died at 6 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. He was a retired machinist with General Electric, Cincinnati, and a member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Covington. He was a member of Colonel Clay Lodge No. 159 F&AM, where he was a past master. He was a member of York Bodies of Covington, Indra Consistory Scottish Rite and Rosebud Chapter No. 39 Order of the Eastern Star. He was a past deputy grand master of Grand Lodge of Kentucky and a past district grand deputy of Order of the Eastern Star Grand Chapter of Kentucky.
Survivors include his wife, Marguerite Justice of Covington; a son, Ronald Kenneth Justice of Florence; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mary C. Kirk, 102, of Crestview Hills, died at 12:35 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Peter Creek Presbyterian Church, Phelps. Her husband, John Kirk, died in 1950.
Survivors include a daughter, Helen Schleyer of Crestview Hills; a son, William Kirk of Huber Heights, Ohio; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchild.

Harold K. Leigh, 66, of Corinth, died at 9 a.m. Friday at Veterans Administration Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired Grant County jailer and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Alberta Leigh; his mother, Lula Kennman Gold of Corinth; and sisters, Gearldine Edwards of Erlanger, Joyce Caldwell, Evelyn Correl and Sharon Joyce, all of Cincinnati.

Robert Leppert, 49, of Cincinnati, died Sunday at Franciscan Hospital Western Hills Campus in Cincinnati. He was a factory worker and an Army veteran.

John L. "Mooch" Lombardo, 80, of Newport, died at 11:55 p.m. Sunday at Veterans Administration Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired jeweler with Wadsworth Watch Case Co. and A. Saur and Co. Jewelers, Cincinnati. He was a charter member of Lawler-Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662, Newport, and a member of Disabled American Veterans.

Eva Mae Munro, 76, of Highland Heights, died at 10:55 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a retired secretary with Eagle Savings and Loan Co. and a member of First Baptist Church of Cold Spring.
