JAMES BENTLEY

James Elmer Bentley, 91, of Harrodsburg, widower of Christine Franklin Bentley, died Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Harrodsburg Healthcare Center.

Born August 29, 1919 in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Oscar and Parlee Douglas Bentley.

He was a member of Pleasant Hill Christian Church and a retired home builder and former owner of Bentley Builders in Harrodsburg and Shelbyville.

He is survived by eight children: Jack Thomas Bentley of Harrodsburg; Don Hill Bentley of Eustis, FL; Bruce Allen Bentley of Crystal River, FL; James Michael (Melissa) Bentley of Maryville, TN; Janet B. (Joe) Burgin of Harrodsburg; Brenda B. (King) Pruitt of Danville; Joan B. (Frank) Sewell of Evansville, IN and Betty B. (Calvin) Shewmaker of Harrodsburg; 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Matherly.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2011 at Best Cemetery in Anderson County with Rev. Leslie Bentley officiating.

FLOYD GRITTON

Floyd Maurice Gritton, 86, of Tryon, NC, formerly of Harrodsburg, husband of Pearl Berryman Gritton, died Monday, April 4, 2011 at the White Oak Manor, Tryon, NC.

Born January 23, 1925 in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Floyd and Grecia Mae Stratton Gritton. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He was a retired Corning Glass employee.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Steve Gritton of NC. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra L. Maus.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2011 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with burial in the Hopewell Baptist Cemetery, Harrodsburg.

Visitation is Friday, April 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

TERESA LOGAN

Teresa McKitric Logan, 58, passed Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Ephraim McDowell Medical Center.

She was born on April 13, 1952 in Mercer County. Teresa was the daughter of Georgia McKitric and the late Ralph McKitric.

Teresa was a member of Little Zion Baptist Church, Burgin, Kentucky and was a former employee of Phillips Lightning Company.

She leaves to cherish her memory: three sons, Craig McKitric, Fernando McKitric and Ryan Logan; four sisters, Dr. Eloise (James) McDowell, Joyce (Samuel) Moore, Sandra Relford and Angela McKitric; two brothers, Ralph (Martina) McKitric, Jr. and Kevin (Mary) McKitric; four grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 5, at the Little Zion Baptist Church in Burgin.

Smith-Jackson Funeral Home in Danville was in charge of arrangements.

MATTHEW MENDEZ

Matthew Wayne Mendez, 15 months, son of Juan and Summer Satterly Mendez of Harrodsburg, died Monday, April 4, 2011 at the UK Medical Center.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by maternal grandparents: Frank and Dottie Jackson and Tommy Satterly of Harrodsburg; paternal grandparent, Judy Mendez of Mexico; great- grandparents: Janice Yount of Harrodsburg, Betty Satterly of Harrodsburg and Rufina Jimenez Garcia; an aunt, Jessica Satterly and an uncle, Geoffrey Peele.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Thursday, March 7 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with burial in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Visitation after 12 p.m. today, Thursday, March 7.

HUBERT ROYALTY

Hubert Cecil Royalty, 88, of Danville died Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at his home.

Born May 13, 1923 at Gravel Switch, he is the son of Roscoe and Maggie Hardin Royalty.

He was a member of the Danville Church of Christ, an electrician and member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, a WWII Army veteran, an avid fisherman and a woodworker.

He is survived by: three sons, David (Ann) Royalty of Cold Spring, Kentucky, Delmer (Geraldine) Royalty of Burgin and Jerry (Kathy) Royalty of Lawrenceburg; six grandchildren, Elizabeth (Jason Benson) Royalty, Jason (Kim) Royalty, Kristal (Tim) Moore, Kyla (Jason) Satterly, Scott Blackburn and Brad Blackburn; seven great-grandchildren, Edwin Quinn and Edward Cade Benson, kaitlyn Royalty, Mallory and Megan Moore, Jaxon and Mia Satterly; three sisters, Laura Coyle, Nicholasville, Wilma Cotton, Danville and Janette Bugg of Louisville.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Myrtle Gipson Royalty.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 7, at the Stith Funeral Home in Danville with Scott Vifquain. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Watson, Anon Martin, Harold Godbey, Wayne Thurman, Russell Waits, Bill Yates, Bob Pentecost, and Tony Miller.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Heritage Hospice.

DOROTHY WILSON

Dorothy Jean Wilson, 77, of Cullman, AL, formerly of Harrodsburg, widow of Cornelious Wilson Jr., died Monday, April 4, 2011 at Cullman Regional Medical Center, Cullman, AL.

Born December 10, 1933 in Winchester, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Mae Shrout Shelton.

She was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church in Danville.

She is survived by a daughter, Jennifer (Gary) DeBoer of Cullman, AL; a brother, Richard Lewis (Madeline) Shelton of Nicholasville; two grandchildren: April Dean Clark and Kayla Dean; three step- grandchildren: Kristin (Bryan) Williams, Gregg (Liz) DeBoer and Joey (Angela) DeBoer; two great-grandchildren; four step-great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Wilson Hensley.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2011 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Rev. Steve James, Rev. Mark Payton and Rev. Fred G. Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens, Lexington.

Visitation will be on Friday, April 8, 2011 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

CLARA BROWN

Clara Mae Brown, 95, passed away Monday, April 4, 2011, at the Golden Living Center - Frankfort.

A native of Avenstoke in Anderson County, Mrs. Brown was born November 16, 1915 to Otha and Nora Belle Hill Noel. She was the widow of Allen Shields Brown.

She was a homemaker and a member of North Frankfort Baptist Church.

Mrs. Brown is survived by: her children:, Joyce Marie Smith (Oscar), Frankfort, Doris Ann Johnson (Sam Jr.), Frankfort, Allen Leroy Brown (Rose E.), Frankfort, Ralph Eugene “Speedy” Brown (Patsy), Stamping Ground, Larry Michael Brown (Ronnie Dennis), Salvisa; grandchildren, Vicki Smith, Kevin Smith, Tanya Brown, Jason Brown, Brian Brown, Steve Johnson, Brandon Dennis, Stephanie Brown Barron; 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Darrell and Lowell Brown, great grandchildren, Amber McDonald and Gavin Barron, her parents and her sister, Christine Cromby.

Services for Mrs. Brown were conducted Friday, April 8, 2011 at the Harrod Brothers Funeral Home in Frankfort with Rev. David Smith officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Woodford County.

Bearers were Aaron Barron, Brian Brown, Jim Rice, Tanner Smith, Zachary Tillman and Brandon Dennis.

Honorary bearers were her grandchildren.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Harrod Brothers Funeral Home.

MAXIE CARROLL

Maxie Stapleton Carroll, 71, widow of Harold Stapleton and James Carroll, died Monday, April 11, 2011 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born April 14, 1939, she was the daughter of the late William Jesse and Drucillia Rodgers Pasley. She was a retired administrative clerk and co-founder of the Care Club for Kentucky Utilities. She was a member of the Berea Christian Church and enjoyed playing the piano, growing flowers, and bird and squirrel watching.

Survivors include two sons: Richard (Carol) Stapleton of Lexington and Michael (Kelley) Stapleton of Harrodsburg; a step-son, Harold Wayne Stapleton of Peru, IN; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Herman Ulysees Pasley and two sisters: Dorothy Waveline and Ocie Madeline Pasley.

Services will be conducted 11 a.m. today, Thursday, April 14, 2011 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. John Westerfield officiating. Burial will be in Berea Christian Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers are: Tony Thompson, Jason Thompson, Scott Patton, Stanley Patton, Bob Webb and Steve Brogle.

Visitation 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 13 and after 7 a.m. today, Thursday, April 14, at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.

EDNA CORNISH

Mrs. Edna Chesser Cornish, 96, of Frankfort, passed away at 7:05 p.m., Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at Bradford Square Nursing Home in Frankfort.

A native of Washington County, she was born on September 8, 1914 to the late Joe Ed and Ada Bell Hudson Cornish.

She was a member of the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, a graduate of Mackville High School and a retired employee for the Kentucky State Department of Personnel.

Survivors include: two daughters, Nancy Sue Snook of Bagdad and JoAnn Shelton of Elizabethtown; three sons, Joseph Ruel “Joe” Cornish (Libby) of Frankfort, William Cecil “Bill” Cornish (Irene) of Bagdad and Danny Dale Cornish of Louisville, 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Ruel Cornish on July 28,1984, two sons, Charles Edward Cornish on October 17, 2007 and James Thomas Cornish on April 14, 2010.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 8 at the Carey & Son Funeral Home in Springfield with Rev. Dan Taylor, associate pastor of the North Franklin Baptist Church, officiating. Assisting was a grandson, Rev. James Ashley Snook.

Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Willisburg.

MICHAEL ELLIOTT

Michael G. Elliott, 61, of Mercer County, died Sunday, April 10, 2011.

Born August 20, 1949, he was the son of the late Elmer and Velma Gibson Elliott. He was the commercial printing manager at the Advocate Messenger.

He is survived by a daughter, Amy (Michael) Tracy of Hustonville; two grandchildren, Michaela and Landen Tracy; a special friend, Jenny Upton of Mercer County; and a step-son, Chase Cunningham of Winchester.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, April 14, 2011, at W. L. Pruitt Funeral Home with Bro. Morris Trayner and Bro. Terry Morrison officiating. Burial will be in Hustonville Cemetery.

Pallbearers are: Billy Kirkpatrick, Chase Cunningham, Clay Kelly, Jeff Bullis, James Morris and Fred Smith.

Honorary pallbearers are: Scott Smith, Stanley and Monte Kelly, Paul Powell, Elijah McQuerry and Herlin Atwood.

Visitation 5 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, April 13, 2011.

VIOLET ELLIOTT

Violet Carey Elliott, 84, of Springfield, widow of Edward Elliott, died Thursday, April 7, 2011 at the Village of Lebanon Nursing Home.

Born March 21, 1927 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Faye Masters Carey. She was a member of the Mackville Church Of Christ and a 1944 graduate and valedictorian of Mackville High School.

She and her husband owned and operated the former Elliott’s Rest Home in Springfield and the home in Harrodsburg, which is now the Harrodsburg Health Care Center. She served as the administrator of The Medco Center of Springfield for many years until her retirement in 1997. She held elected positions with both the Kentucky and the American Nursing Home Associations and was a member of the American College of Nursing Home Administrators.

She was a member of the Washington County Homemakers Club for 59 years and had been a member of the Springfield Woman’s Club, the Springfield Business and Professional Women’s Club and was named the BPW Woman of Achievement in 1995. She also served as a director of the Chamber of Commerce and was on the Washington County Senior Citizens Board.

“I Remember Mackville” was a syndicated column written by Elliott for five years, which was later complied in book form. She also wrote the “Mackville Boosters” column for The Harrodsburg Herald. She served as grand marshal of the Mackville Harvest Festival parade and instigated the Mackville Alumni Association and the Hall of Fame. She designed both the Mackville Afghan and Graduation Quilt and was co-author of the Mackville Pictorial Book. In 2008, she was inducted into the Mackville School Hall of Fame.

She is survived by a daughter, Marian (Bill) Braden of Frankfort; two sons, Doug (Kathy) Elliott of Springfield and Paul (Terry) Elliott of Indianapolis, IN; a sister, Joyce Kuehr of Louisville; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Clark Elliott.

Services were held Monday, April 11, 2011 at the Mackville Community Development Center with Bro. Charles Knecht officiating. Burial was in Peter Cemetery, Mackville.

Carey and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were: Todd Hood, Brad Dunnagan, Keith Kuehr, Mike Kuehr, David Pendley and Sandy Carey.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Clark Elliott Scholarship Fund, Mackville Church of Christ or the Mackville Boosters.
