Murder, Suicide Claims 2 Lives

The Mercer County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting deaths last week of two people in Burgin.

Sheriff Ernie Kelty said a family member of Rafael Lopez, 63, and Teresa Lopez, 56, called to report that the two were found unresponsive in their home at 370 Paradise Camp Road. Upon arrival, deputies found Rafael Lopez in a bedroom and Teresa Lopez in the dining room. Gunshot wounds were the cause of death for both victims, and Kelty said investigators believe Rafael Lopez shot his wife before turning the gun on himself. A .38 caliber handgun was recovered at the scene. Kelty said the home was secure and there were no signs of forced entry. The incident has officially been ruled a murder/suicide.

The couple had reportedly been married for about 15 years, and Kelty said a family member had spoken to Teresa Lopez about 24 hours before the shooting. The couple leaves behind one daughter, Eliza L. Correa of Harrodsburg, one son, Yves Lopez, of Danville and eight grandchildren.

Rafael Lopez was born in Cuba and was a retired American Airlines aircraft mechanic. He was a member of New Life Ministries.

Teresa Lopez was a retired Mercer County School bus driver. Barbara Hawkins, assistant transportation director of the school, said Lopez retired shortly after her husband and the two planned to travel. “She was a wonderful driver; the kids loved her, and she got along well with everyone here. She was always happy and always had a smile on her face. We’re all really going to miss her,” Hawkins said. She added that Teresa and Rafael Lopez always seemed to get along well and appeared to be happy together. “It was a shock to all of us that this happened. They seemed very jovial whenever you saw them out or went to their house. It’s a very sad situation,” she said.

A motive of the shooting has not been determined.
