RONALD FIELDS

Ronald Coleman Fields, 82, died Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.

He was the widower of Wyna Sparrow Fields and was born October 31, 1928, son of the late Coleman and Ann Kemp Fields.

Ronald was a retired Lawrenceburg businessman for 40 years managing Ronald Fields Insurance Co. and from 1964-96 he and his family operated the famous Fairground Drive-in. He and his wife formerly owned the Sparrow’s Nest Tea Room and were part owners in the former Gordon Funeral Home. He previously worked as personnel manager for Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL and Hallmack in Harrodsburg. He received a B.S. Degree in Business from the University of Kentucky and served in the U.S. Army. His memberships included the Tyrone Baptist Church, American Legion Post #34, V.F.W. Post #4075, and past president of the Optimist Club.

Ronald is survived by his children: Ronald C. (Leslie) Fields, Jr., and Suzanne Fields, both of Lawrenceburg, and Cathy (Jeff) Taylor of Versailles; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Wanda) Roquemore of Lawrenceburg; a sister, Clydia “Cookie” Case of Kansas City; and a special friend, Gladys Hutcherson of Frankfort.

Services were conducted Saturday June 11, 2011 at the Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home in Lawrenceburg with Bro. Terry Cooper officiating. Burial followed in Lawrenceburg Cemetery with military honors.

Casketbearers were Ronald Fields, Jr., John Taylor, Maury Sparrow, Lynn Huddleston, Bobby and Kyle Hutcherson.

Memorials are suggested to Anderson County Relay for Life, c/o Derek Ruble, 106 Hamlin Way, Lawrenceburg, KY 40342.

STEPHANIE GOODLETT

Stephanie Goodlett, age 19, of Harrodsburg, died Thursday, June 9, 2011.

Born Nov. 4, 1991 in Danville, she was the daughter of the late Woodrow S. Goodlett Sr. and Mary Ruth Underwood Goodlett of Harrodsburg. She attended Carpenter’s Christian Church.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Kelsey Grace Dennis of Harrodsburg; a son, Jackson Dewayne Goodlett of Danville; a sister, Kim Huetter of Bowling Green; two brothers, Doc Goodlett of Lincoln County and Phillip Goodlett of Danville.

Services were conducted Monday, June 13 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with burial in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Phillip Goodlett, Carl Dennis, Doc Goodlett, Dustin Stinnett, Dylan Preston and Sid Dunn.

Honorary pallbearers were: Jordan Long, Amanda Miller, Brittany Reed, Emily Beasley, Brittney Montgomery and Erica Drury.

RICHARD JAMES

Richard James, age 78, Harrodsburg, husband of Daisey Logue James, died Monday, June 13, 2011 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, Danville.

Born Sept. 28, 1932 in Garrard County, he was the son of the late James E. and Olive Branch Conn James. He served in the Navy during the Korean War. He was a retired machinist from Corning Glass and a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Vicki (Gerald W.) Black of Lexington and Beverly Grace (John David) Faulkner of Boyle County; two sons, Charles Coleman (Shari) James of Camden, SC and John E. (Norma Anne) James of Harrodsburg; two stepsons, Kenneth Michael (Mary Jo) Lewis and Fred Patrick (Tabi) Lewis of Harrodsburg; a stepdaughter, Mary Jo Steele of Nicholasville; fifteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard James.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 17 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Bobby Logue, Hillary Claypoole and Lewis Walters officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers are: Charles Coleman James Jr., William Curtis, Jason Todd, Clinton Matthew Bugg, John David Faulkner II, Zachary Patrick Lewis, Zane Patterson Lewis and Levi Michael Lewis.

Honorary pallbearers are: Aaron Steele, Jeff Middaugh and Donald Logue.

Visitation is Thursday, June 16 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be sent to American Diabetes. Association.

LANCE LAWSON

Lance Lawson, 22, of Danville, died Friday, June 10, 2011 in Stanford.

Born Aug. 9, 1988 in Danville, he was the son of Sandy Hicks Hogue and the late David Lawson.

In addition to his mother and stepfather, Terry Hogue, he is survived by a sister, Jessica (Loren) Arth of Danville; a fiancee, Kaci Tankersley of Stanford; two stepbrothers, Creed Hogue of Danville and Brandon Hogue of Louisville; a stepsister, Vanessa Hogue of Louisville and a niece, Sydney Hogue.

Services were conducted Tuesday, June 14 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Matthew Robins. Burial was in Deep Creek Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Scott Sheen, Todd Barlow, Slade Perkins, Gene Humfleet, Tommy Estes and Gary “Tiki” Popplewell.

Honorary pallbearers were: Rick Helton, Chad Sinkhorn and Mike, John, Keith, Daniel and Jody Humfleet.

TINA LOGUE

Tina S. Logue, 67, of Harrodsburg, died Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, Danville.

Born Jan. 6, 1944 in Parksville, she was the daughter of the late Jim and Tine Burger Strevels.

She was a retired Cricketeer and Hitachi employee. She was a member of the Deep Creek Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Sandy Logue of Harrodsburg; a sister, Ruth King of Parksville; a special friend, William “Bill” Satterley; eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Lee Logue; two brothers, Jack and Jimmy Strevels and two sisters, Mary Belle King and Frances Coffman.

Services were conducted Saturday, June 11 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Billy Eldridge officiating. Burial was in Deep Creek Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Brian Strevels, James Strevels, Jerry Bugg, Jeffrey Logue, Travis Bugg and Robert Powell.

NORMA MARTIN

Norma Ann Martin, 69, of Harrodsburg, widow of Kenny Martin, died Monday, June 13, 2011 at her home.

Born Dec. 28, 1941 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Elwood and Mattie Frances Elliott Young. She was a retired Square D Manufacturing employee. She was a member of the Harrodsburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church.\

She is survived by a son, Frank (Becky) Martin of Harrodsburg; a sister, Nancy Bronson Yeast of Harrodsburg; two sisters-in-law, Thelma McDonald of Harrodsburg and Ginny (Charlie) Jones of Georgetown.

She was preceded in death by a son, Ken Douglas Martin and two siblings, Kenneth Young and Evelyn Mattingly.

Services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, June 16 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Lewis Walters, Larry D. Camic and Harold Best officiating with burial in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Visitation 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 15 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

Pallbearers are: Mike Thompson, Jamie Stump, Terry Sears, Donnie Tyler, Steve Mattingly, Jackie Mattingly and Jerry Lane.

Honorary bearers are: Mike Conover, Terry Myers, Mike Hartman, Jenny Baker, Candi Steele, Paul and Roxanne Parks, Bronson Yeast, Dr. Mohammad Shahzad, Carol Richardson, Tim Ellis, Lisa Spivey, Ricky Lane, Jaime Stump, Brian and Benjamine Sears, Miranda Richardson, Mercer EMS, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

MARTHA MERRYMAN

Martha L. Coffman Merryman, 88, of Lexington, died on Monday, June 13, 2011.

A native of Mercer County she was born May 15, 1923, to the late Barney and Connealia Crutchfield Coffman.

She was a member of Porter Memorial Baptist Church and loved gardening, canning and cooking for family gatherings.

She is survived by a son, Herbert “Steve” Merryman; a sister, Frankie Bradshaw of Louisville; two nieces, Carol White of Somerset and Deena Smiley of Louisville; a cousin, Connie Cox of Wilmore and other relatives and friends.

Services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, June 16 at Hager and Cundiff Funeral Home with burial in Shawnee Run Baptist Church Cemetery, in Mercer County.

Visitation 10 a.m. Thursday, June 16 until time of service.

MARY MOORE

Mary Frances Yankey Moore, of Harrodsburg, widow of Thomas I. Moore, died Saturday, June 11, 2011 at her home.

Born Dec. 3, 1926 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late James DeBo and Myrtle Edwards Yankey.

She had 13 siblings. She was a teacher for over 30 years, having taught in Junction City, Mt. Washington and at the Harrodsburg Elementary School. Following her retirement, she worked 12 years as a guide for Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill. She was a member of the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by two children, Francis “Frank” Edwards Moore of Vero Beach, FL and Anne Thomas Moore (Paul) Cox, of Lexington; two brothers, Billy Rue (Mary) Yankey and Lowell Thomas (Betty Lou) Yankey and seven grandchildren.

Services were conducted Tuesday, June 14 at the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church by Reverend Stephanie Wing. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Tommy, Mike, Roger, Charles and Harold Yankey, Brad Noel and Tim Lanham.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, American Cancer Society or the United Presbyterian Church of Harrodsburg.

Ransdell Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

PHILLIP WAFFORD

Phillip B. Wafford, 67, of Salvisa, died Monday June 6, 2011.

Born November 28, 1943, he was the son of Lucille Wafford and the late Robert Brown Wafford.

He was a retired master electrician and recently employed with White House Electric in Georgetown.

He is survived by: one daughter, Phillita Jill Wafford Ammons of Harrodsburg; one brother, Raymond Wafford of Mt. Washington; one son, Mitch Doyle of Harrodsburg. Phillip is also survived by two grandchildren, Sarah Ammons and Sophia Ammons, of Harrodsburg; and two nieces.

Phillip was preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Rhorer and Bobbie Ann Spaulding.

Memorial services will be conducted at the Faith Temple Pentecostal Church, 205 Otter Street, Danville, June 30, 2011 at 6 p.m. with Sister Jolene Bailey officiating. A Reception will follow.

Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JACK BAILEY

Jack Bailey, 72, of Harrodsburg, died Friday, June 17, 2011 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 8, 1938 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late William L. and Ressie Bottom Bailey. He was director of the Harrodstown Singers, and he and Jesta Belle Matherly operated an art gallery for several years.

Bailey was a graduate of Campbellsville College and received his master’s degree in arts in education from Eastern Kentucky State College in 1962. He was an entertainer, artist and taught at Northern Kentucky Community College. He authored several books and formerly was a contributing writer for “Mercer’s Magazine.”

Bailey is survived by several first cousins including: Gloria Davis, Hettie Logue, Paula B. Freeman, Imogene Freeman, Marsola and Loretta Baker, Juell Henninger, Z. T. and R.C. Lester, Bill Elliott, Tony Springate, Patsy Elliott, Tony and Terry Mobley, Peggy Butcher and Patty B. Lumpkin.

Services were held Sunday, June 19 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Westerfield officiating. Paula Freeman read selected chapters from Gibran’s “The Prophet” and offered the eulogy and Charles Semones read “Dirge Without Music” by Edna St. Vincent Millay. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

JACK BAILEY

Cancer Claims Life of Jack Bailey

Jack Bailey, 72, of Harrodsburg died Friday at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital after a nine month battle with acute myeloid leukemia.

A musician, Bailey was a professional entertainer. For nearly 15 years, he performed at popular night clubs including the Continental Inn, Ramada Imperial and the old Phoenix hotel in Lexington. He also performed in Santa Barbara, Calif., appeared on the Johnny Carson Show and was the featured organist at the Phoenix, Ariz. horse show.

Baily taught at Northern Kentucky High School and at Southwester College. He returned to Harrodsburg in 1977. He focused on church music, served as music director and organist at churches including the Harrodsburg Christian Church and First Christian Church in Danville.

In the 1980s, he directed the Harrodstown Singers. He also played for weddings, funerals and special events and occasionally gave piano concerts.

In 1979, genealogy became a passion for Bailey and he sought to research the roots of the Bailey and Bottom families. He published several books including “Bury Me at Dixville.” As a result of his family research, he was named hereditary member of the national Huguenot Society (17-3790) as a descendent from Abraham Sallee.

He also wrote a column titled “I Recall” for “Mercer’s Magazine: and compiled two volumes titled “Murder, Mischief, Mayhem, Misdemeanors (and downright Meanness) in Mercer,” which listed newspaper accounts of early trials, murders and other cases. Excerpts from these volumes were also published in “Mercer’s magazine.”

Bailey was the son of the late William L. and Ressie (Bottom) Bailey and is survived by several first cousins.
