SALLY ALSMAN

Sally Messer Alsman, 74, of Mitchellsburg, died Tuesday, June 21, 2011, in Danville. She was the wife of Earnest Alsman.

Born January 1, 1937, in Hazard, she was a daughter of the late Alfred and Nancy Messer.

Sally was a homemaker and a member of Bluegrass Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by: five daughters, Mary (David) Hall of Beaver Dam, Betty (James) Slaven of Burgin, Edith (Don) Hall of Beaver Dam, Wonda (Clyde) Berryman of Crab Orchard and Lois (Brandon) McQueary of Danville; three sons, Amos (Dicie) Alsman of Beaver Dam, Earnest Wayne (Jennifer) Alsman of Mitchellsburg and Larry Conley of Hazard; seven brothers, Carew, Benton, Adam, John, Burt, Willie and Earnest Gene Messer; four sisters, Della, Callie, Dorie and Rachel; 22 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandchild.

Services were conducted Friday, June 24, 2011, at the Wilder Funeral Home in Perryville by the Rev. Mark Tate. Burial was in Junction City Cemetery.

MARY CHAMBLESS

Mary Waters Chambless, of Harrosburg, widow of Robert Lee Chambless, died Monday, June 27 at her home.

Born August 2, 1925 in Pittsburgh, Penn., she was the daughter of the late Mary Hilleary Shreve Waters Price and the attorney John Henry Waters. Her father died one week before her birth and Col. Carroll Porteous Price, M.D. of Harrodsburg, was her step-father.

She attended the University of Nebraska, Duchesne College and George Washington University before graduating with honors and a bachelor of arts degree in history and political science from Centre College in Danville. She also studied for a time at the New York School of Interior Design.

She managed the Beaumont Inn Gift Shop and in 1958 began working as a commentator for WHBN Radio Station, during her career she traveled to Cuba sending reports back to WHBN. She also wrote articles about her world travels for The Louisville Courier Journal. An avid golfer at Bright Leaf, she compiled the “Tee Time” column in The Harrodsburg Herald. She was a member of the Harrodsburg Women’s Club and the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a brother, Monty Price, Sr.; three step-sons: Robert Lee Chambless Jr., Thomas and John William Chambless; two step-daughters, Rita Chambless West and Robin Chambless; four nephews: Monty, Jr. and Preston Price and Charles, Jr. and Kevin Waters; three nieces: Jeannette Price Nelson, Brooke Ballantyne and Mary Hilleary Waters; two great-nieces; five great-nephews; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 10 a.m. Friday, July 1 at the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church with Pastors Jimmy Owens and Ken Klemme officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 30.

Memorials may be directed to the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church, the Salvation Army, the Harrodsburg Historical Society or Centre College.

MARY CHAMBLESS

Local Radio Personality Dies

A former Harrodsburg radio personality, Mary Waters Chambless, died Monday, June 27.

A native of Pittsburgh, Penn., Chambless was born Aug. 2, 1925. She first moved to Harrodsburg in 1943 with her mother and her stepfather, Col. Carroll Porteous Price, M. D. she married Robert Lee Chambless in 1978.

In 1958, Chambless began working as a commentator for WHBN Radio, where she gained a following with her daily talk show, “The Mary Chambless Show.” Goldie goldsmith, a protégé of Chambless and host of WHBN’s “What’s Happening Goldie,” said it was easy to get lost in conversations with Chambless. “Every time I would go on her show to promote something I was doing, we’d get to talking, and she’d look up and motion to me that she needed to go to break,” Goldsmith said. “She was an icon to this whole community.

Chambless loved to travel, and in 1960 she took a trip to Cuba after Castro’s revolution and sent reports back to WHBN, for he 45 minutes weekday talk show. She also embarked on an adventure, which she called the “Journey form the Heart of the Bluegrass to the Heart of the World.” Operating in the mode of President Eisenhower’s publicized “Journey into Understanding,” Chambless shared her experiences with the young students who were studying the lands where she was going. She wrote articles about he travels for The Louisville Courier Journal. Countries she visited throughout her life included Cuba, Greece, Italy, Egypt, Turkey, Spain, Prance, China, Australia and New Zealand. She also wrote about her travels in the Louisville Courier-Journal newspaper.

After her husband’s death, Chambless continued to travel and work at WHBN. At age 83, she concluded her 50-year career with WHBN. She ended her career in radio just two years ago after undergoing heart surgery.

Goldsmith said she would often see Chambless heading toward the radio station just moments before her show was set to begin. “You would hear her intro music playing on the radio and look out the window and see her heading up Main Street,” Goldsmith said. “She was in no hurry, but she know what she was talking about and she was well traveled. She was an interesting lady that will really be missed a lot.”

CLYDE DEMAREE

Clyde H. Demaree, 90, of Danville, husband of Helen Thomas Demaree, died Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the Charleston Health Care Center in Danville.

Born March 19, 1921 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late Clyde and Elsie Burrus Demaree.

He served in the Marine Corps during WWII in the South Pacific. He was a retired technician with South Central Bell.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Betty Ann McAnley of Frankfort; three grandchildren: Chris (Lezli) Mattingly, Tammy Graham and Misty (James) Rose and three great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lavern Lawson and a sister, Arnetta Clark.

Private services will be conducted at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

MICHAEL HARMON SR.

Michael "Mickey" McDowell Harmon Sr., 77, of Perryville died Tuesday, June 28, 2011, in Danville.

Born February 9, 1934, in Boyle County, he was a son of the late Clyde and Blanche Harmon.

Mickey was a member of Perryville Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Perryville High School, where he played all sports. He attended Centre College, where he played football, and was an Army veteran and a self-employed cattle and tobacco farmer.

Mickey was Boyle County Saheriff from 1973 to 1977. Before being elected sheriff, he served as a deputy for the county. After leaving the sheriff’s office, he successfully ran for the office of jailer. He also worked as a deputy Property Valuation Administrator. Mickey continued serving Boyle County when he was elected magistrate for District 1, an office he held for two terms. He was a true icon within the Democratic party. Mickey always looked forward to the annual Democratic fish fry, where he and several fellow Democrats were in charge of frying the fish. For him it was an evening full of good food and good friends. He also was a member of the executive board of the Boyle County Democratic party.

Mickey was member of the National Softball Hall of Fame, Boyle County Quarterback Club and was inducted into the Boyle County Hall of Fame in 2010.

Mickey’s love of sports lead him to coaching both youth league football and fast pitch softball.

Survivors include: two daughters, Diana (Mike) Gilley of Illinois and Susan Harmon of Lexington; one son, Mike (Jessica) Harmon of Mercer County; his longtime companion, Marcia Pierce; three sisters, Edna Frances Lankford and Marian Gibson, both of Danville, and Martha Noel Henry of North Carolina; and five grandchildren, Steven Scott Gowers, Bridget Holderman, Dowell Harmon, Haley and Austin Elliott.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, July 2, at the Perryville Baptist Church by the Rev. Doug Davis. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. military rites will be performed by American Legion Post 18.

Active pallbearers will be Jeff Glasscock, Tony and Mike Wilder, Richard Campbell, Jimmy Overstreet, Harold McKinney, Karl Luttrell and Jack Key.

Honorary pallbearers will be Darren Peckler, Stewart McDermott, Melvin Young, Buddy Lutes, Murice and Tommy Hundley and members of the Boyle County Fiscal Court.

Visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Expressions of sympathy are suggested to the Boyle County Quarterback Club, c/o Boyle County High School, 1637 Perryville Road, Danville, KY 40422, and Danville Baseball, c/o Ray Whitehouse, 160 Old Bridge Road, Danville, KY 40422.

Wilder Funeral Home, Perryville, is in charge of arrangements.

OLA HURST

Ola F. Hurst, 78, widow of Carl Winn Hurst, died Friday, June 24, 2011 at her residence.

Born March 26, 1933 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Perry Oliver and Fannie Bell Watts McGinnis.

She was a homemaker, had worked at Botner’s Rexall Drugstore and Gem Drug Store. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

She is survived by three sons: Robert Winn (Debra) Hurst of Harrodsburg, James Edward Hurst of Waynesburg and Anthony Todd (Polly) Hurst of Harrodsburg; three brothers: Joe McGinnis, Perry McGinnis, Jr. and Charles Frank McGinnis, all of Harrodsburg; two grandchildren; one great-grandson and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Sherrie Diane Hurst and Vanessa Lynn Hurst Sims.

Funeral services were held Sunday, June 26 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Marshall Griggs officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Jerry Wayne Stratton, Billy McGinnis, Jon Sullivan, Mark Wilhelm, Travis Mize and Joseph Bryant Sims.

ALBERT KUHR

Albert “Bert” Frederick Kuhr, born October 17, 1929, in Chicago, passed away on June 20, 2011.

A Korean War veteran who served in U.S. Army Intelligence, he was a private person who loved to read about history and travel the states and abroad. He loved recent travels to Europe with family, exploring churches, cemeteries, culture and food. He especially loved Krakow. Love of the arts drew him to community theatre where he performed in numerous musicals over a span of 40 years. Comical roles were his forté. He loved to sing, performing with choirs including the Elk Grove Festival Chorus in Illinois and the Danville Summer singers.

He was an engineer for many years working for GM, Sunbeam, USG and his own company, Tri-Light. He worked on numerous projects, including the designs of the Aero Train, toasters, ceiling tiles and lighting, receiving many patents for his designs.

He was father of Audrey (Jack) Darville and Karen (Kevin) Hoormann; grandfather of Anna (Jordan) Ellis, Sandra (Corey) Davis, Luke Darville and Sharon Hoormann; and great-grandfather of Anika and Andrew Ellis.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy.

The funeral service was held Saturday, June 25, at The Presbyterian Church of Danville with the Rev. Jim Stewart officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Heritage Hospice in Danville, whose support and expertise is greatly appreciated.

ROSE MOSS

Rose Marie Moss, 64, of Carlisle, died Saturday, June 25, 2011 at the Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Born January 29, 1947 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Cecil Matthew and Madelyn Lucille Powell McGlone.

She was an employee of Blue Lick State Park.

She is survived by a son, Nathan Matthew Dossett of Warsaw; three sisters: Barbara Baughman of Harrodsburg, Doris Weddle and Bonnie Milburn, both of Danville and four grandchildren.

Services were conducted Wednesday, June 29 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Dr. Robert DeFoor officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Nathan and Nate Dossett, David Moss, Brent Newby, Rick Steele and Gordon Weddle.

GLENDON SEA

Glendon Raymond Sea, 73, died TUE, at the V.A. Medical Center in Lexington.

He is the son of the late Arnold Wesley and Beulah Earlene Hoskins Sea.

He was a member of Shiloh Christian Church, graduate of Western High School, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by: two daughters, Donna Kay (Timmy) Riley, Salvisa and Susan Renee Sea, Lawrenceburg; two sisters, Nancy Cooper, Lawrenceburg and Patsy Sue Sea, Washington County; one brother, David Leslie Sea, Lawrenceburg; two grandchildren, Kristie Lee Watts, Salvisa, and Jill Marie Evans, Lawrenceburg; two great grandchildren, Garret Hasten Watts, and Mikayla Grace Watts, Salvisa.

No services scheduled.

MARY STINNETT

Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Spaulding Stinnett, 83, of Lawrenceburg, widow of Kenneth Stinnett, died Sunday, June 26, 2011 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

She was born in Anderson County to the late Clayton and Ruth Mae Brown Spaulding.

She was a member of Claylick United Methodist Church and attended Sand Spring Baptist Church. She was a retired employee of Kentucky Overall Service.

She is survived by two sons, Charles K. Stinnett of Harlan and Nelson Stinnett of Lawrenceburg; two brothers, Lonnie (Donnie) Spaulding of Lawrenceburg and Jessie (Alene) Spaulding of Mercer County; a son-in-law, James Penn of Lawrenceburg; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Velma Mae Penn; a daughter-in-law, Rita Stinnett; a sister, Penny Drury; two brothers, William G. and Allen Spaulding; two half-brothers, Robert and Johnny Spaulding and a half-sister, Nellie Sherrow.

Services held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 30 at the Gash Memorial Chapel with Dr. Mike Hamrick officiating. Burial will follow in Hebron Cemetery.

Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2011.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Anderson County Senior Citizens, 160 Township Square, Lawrenceburg, KY 40342.

MIKE VOTAW

Mike Votaw, 62, of Lancaster, husband of Betty B. Votaw, died on Monday, June 27, 2011 at his residence.

Born in Harrodsburg, he was the son of Paul and Bessie L. Steele Votaw. He was a graduate of Harrodsburg High School and attended the University of Kentucky. He was a network analyst at Modine Corporation, a free mason and a member of Harrodsburg Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by a daughter, DeSha (Chris) Ferguson; a grandson, Chase Ferguson; two brothers, Steve (Ann) Votaw and David (Lisa) Votaw; two brothers-in-law, Eddie (Janice) Ball and Carol (Bobbie) Ball and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and cousins.

Services will be conducted 10:30 am Friday, July 1 at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home in Lexington with Bro. Travis Alltop officiating. Burial will be in the Blue Grass Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers are: Bill Hayslett, David Dannheiser, Hardy Utley, Todd Bowman, Steve Blevins and Bobbie Stratton.

Honorary pallbearers are: Patrick and Derek Votaw, Derek Wilson, Aaron Ball and Bob Bowling.

Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 30, at the funeral home.
