TYLER BAKER

Tyler Rece Baker, 2, died Friday, July 1, 2011 at the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital in Lexington.

Born May 16, 2009 in Danville, he was the son of James Daniel and Heather Downs Baker of Harrodsburg. He loved helping his dad, playing ball, his tractors and animals.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Shelby Daniell Baker of Harrodsburg; his maternal grandparents, Roy Downs and Frances Downs, both of Willisburg; his paternal grandmother, Joyce Lyons of Mackville and his paternal great- grandmother, Ruby Peavler of Harrodsburg.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Danny Baker.

Services were conducted Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Derek Baker officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: A. J. Curtsinger, Jerry Byrd, Stephen Elder, Christopher Downs, Cliff Lester and Jason Dean.

LANA DURR

Lana Lane Carey Durr, 67, wife of Lynn Dale Durr, died Thursday, June 30, 2011 at her residence.

Born November 3, 1943 in Bullitt County, she was the daughter of the late Marvin and Iona Gentry Carey. She was a homemaker and a member of the Berea Christian Church. She enjoyed going to yard sales, antiques and working in her yard.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two grandchildren, Angela Crystal Owen Williams of Harrodsburg and Joshua Dean Owen of Springfield; two brothers, Boyce (Rose) Carey of Mt. Washington and Bruce (Cheryl) Carey of Harrodsburg; two sisters, Betty (Omer) Proctor of Shepherdsville and Mary (Terry) Hedgespeth of Bardstown; a father-in-law, Morris Durr of Harrodsburg; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Carey Dean Owen and Clinton Lane Owen; a sister, Nancy Lavonne Carey and a brother, Kenneth Ray Carey.

Services were conducted Saturday, July 2, 2011 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Harley Humfleet officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Terry Carey, Jason Carey, Omer Dale Proctor, Donnie Bramblet, Joshua Owen and Tommy Reynolds.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Berea Christian Church.

DONNA GOWINS

Donna Faye Goodknow Gowins, 75, of Harrodsburg died Saturday, July 2, 2011 at the Select Specialty Hospital in Lexington.

Born March 25, 1936 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late William Phillip and Stella Masters Goodknow.

She was a retired school bus driver for the Pinellas County Florida School System. She was a member of the Grace Baptist Church and enjoyed reading, quilting and cooking.

Survivors include two sons: David P. (Karen) Sims of Knoxville, Tenn. and Jerry K. Sims of Tampa, Fla.; a daughter, Sherilyn (Gary) Perkins of Lancaster; a sister Sue (Jack) Pearson of Harrodsburg, a nephew; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son Eddie Glenn Siler.

Services were conducted Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. David Collier officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Lil Jack Pearson, David Sims, Jerry Sims, Gary Perkins, Jr., Eddie Curry, Clayton Devine, Ronnie Devine, Kenny Coyle and Ron Bradford.

C. W. GREEN

C. W. Green, 83, of Burgin, husband of Mayme Corman Green, died Friday, July 1, 2011, in Lexington.

Born Sept. 5, 1927 in Burgin, he was the son of the late Earnest and Dixie Mae Warren Green.

He served during World War II in the U. S. Air Force. He owned and operated Green’s Service Station and Bait Shop for many years and was an avid fisherman.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna G. Conn of Burgin; a son, Michael (Rebecca) Green of Burgin; a sister, Sue (Darrell) Bottom of Harrodsburg and two brothers, Joe (Ann) Greene of Harrodsburg and Richard Green of Ala.; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were conducted Monday, July 4 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Carl McCray officiating. Burial was in the Burgin Memorial Garden, with military rites.

Pallbearers were: Richard Green, Randy Green, Paul Green, Jarrod Conn, Kevin Corman and Bobby Edwards.

Honorary bearers were: Joe Greene, Richard Green, Frank Corman, Sue and Darrell Bottom, A. J. Green, David C. Taylor, Chris Underwood and Frank Edwards.

CHARLOTTE GROVES

Charlotte Jane White Groves, 71, of Shelbyville, wife of Jerry Groves, died Sunday, July 3, 2011 in Danville.

A native of Spencer County, she was the daughter of Paul White, Sr. and Evelyn Shields White.

She was a retired school lunchroom worker. She was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Connie (Wayne) Johnson of Waddy and Debbie (Fred) Hammond of Harrodsburg; two sons, Mike Johnson of Bloomfield and Eddie (Ann) Johnson of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Carolyne (Tom) Goodlett of Shelbyville; two brothers, Paul (Mary) White, Jr. of Shepherdsville and Tim White of Eminence; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Denise Ware.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Thursday, July 7 at the Shannon Funeral Home in Shelbyville with Dr. David Roach officiating. Burial will be in Grove Hill Cemetery.

Visitation 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 6 at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association.

JOHN HOLT

John M. “Hillbilly” Holt, born as Sterling M. Tackett, 91, widower of Annabell Holt and Rose Mary Holt, died Thursday, June 30, 2011 at Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital in Grand Rapids, Minn.

Born April 6, 1920 in Pike County. He was the son of Orbe and Cora Stewart Tackett. He joined the U.S. Army at an early age and served twenty three years in the Army. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He operated Hillbilly Holt’s Café for many years, was an avid fisherman, a lifetime member of the American Legion, D.A.V.,and the V.F.W. He was well known for his love of being a caller for bingo fundraisers.

Survivors include five sisters: Marcella White, Joyce Hall, Jean (Jerry) Compton, Linda (Dennis) Shewmaker, and Pat Yeast; a brother, Arvid (Ruby) Tackett and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services with military honors will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, July 7, at Spring Hill Cemetery with Bro. James Harley officiating.

Visitation will be from 1 until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the American Legion or D.A.V.

BELINDA KELLEY

Belinda Marie Kelley, 47, of Harrodsburg, died Thursday, June 30, 2011 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born November 30, 1963 in Lexington, she was the daughter of the late James Brooks and Henry and Edna Allen Hiter of Harrodsburg.

She was Pentecostal by faith, a certified medical assistant and worked at Fellowship Home in Dayton, Ohio and the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

In addition to her mother and stepfather, she is survived by two brothers, James Brooks and Willie Brooks both of Harrodsburg; a sister Kathie Jennings of Harrodsburg; a special friend, Robert Olin of Mercer County and several nieces and nephews.

Services were conducted Sunday, July 3, 2011 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Jack Carpenter officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Lee Shannon, Anthony Williamson, Jacob Justice, Roger Jennings, Donald Taylor and Thomas Pratt.

BOBBY MCCOUN

Bobby Allen McCoun, 80, of Lawrenceburg, died Friday, July 1, 2011 at the Thompson Hood Veteran Center in Wilmore.

He was born June 8, 1931 in Mercer County, son of the late Leslie B. and Loretta Drury McCoun.

Bobby retired following 41 ½ years of service as an electric lineman for the former Fox Creek R.E.C.C. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was one of the Chosin Few, a decisive battle during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post #34, Korean War Veterans Post in Lexington, and the Lawrenceburg United Methodist Church.

He is survived by: his wife of 59 years, Betty Sue Wilson McCoun; one son, Gene Davis (Beverly) McCoun; two grandchildren, Tracey Elizabeth McCoun and Bobby Urbane (Stephanie) McCoun adn two great-grandchildren Ryan and Jacob McCoun, all of Frankfort; one brother, Donald G. (Daris) McCoun of Woodford County; and a sister-in-law, Kitty McCoun.

He was preceded in death by a son, Trp. Bobby Allen McCoun, Jr. and a brother, W. T. McCoun.

Funeral service were held Sunday, July 3, at the Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home in Lawrenceburg with Rev. Karen Stigall and Bro. George Dye officiating. Burial followed in the Lawrenceburg Cemetery with military honors.

Casketbearers were Bobby McCoun, Scott McCoun, Lynn Perkins, Larry Giles, Ray Searcy and Paul Proctor.

Honorary bearers were Tracey, Ryan, and Jacob McCoun, Charles Staples, Bob Kincer, and Tom Chapman.

Memorials are suggested to KY State Police Trooper Island, P.O. Box 473, Albany, KY 42602.

JAMES ROBINSON

James Cleveland “Red” Robinson, 81, of Salvisa, died Saturday, July 2, 2011 at the Thomson Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore.

Born December 14, 1929 in Lawrenceburg, he was the son of the late James Harvey and Hester Humes Robinson.

He served during the Korean War in the U. S. Army. He was a retired City Of Harrodsburg employee.

Survivors include: a daughter, Rebecca (Chip) R. Phillips of Susanville, Calif.; a sister, Lyda Robinson of Salvisa; a brother, Rayford Robinson of Fairdale; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by siblings: William (Ras) Robinson, Katheryn Baker and Nancy Robinson.

Services 11 a.m. Thursday, July 7 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with David Collier officiating. Burial will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Visitation 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

GARY SMITH SR.

Gary Lee Smith, Sr., 60, of Harrodsburg, died Saturday, July 2, 2011 at his home.

Born January 5, 1951 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late John Wiley Smith II and Mary VanDyke.

He was a 1969 graduate of Harrodsburg High School where he had perfect attendance 3 out of 4 years, served in the U.S. Army, was a former Hallmack employee, worked part-time at Wal-Mart and was a member of the Centennial Baptist Church.

Survivors include: a daughter, Courtney Smith of Frankfort; two sons, Gary Lee Smith, Jr. of West Liberty and Davelle Smith of Lexington; three sisters: Mary (Jerry) Beddinger, Loretta (Robert) Bean and Sandy VanDyke, all of Harrodsburg; six brothers: Don Smith of Danville, Steve Smith of Harrodsburg, Cecil (Beverly) Smith of Harrodsburg, Mark (Angie) Smith of Ashland, Tilton (Lois) Bradshaw of Harrodsburg and Joey (Loretta) Jones of Harrodsburg; seven grandchildren; a fiancé, Donna Terrell and three step-children of Harrodsburg.

Services will be held 4:30 p.m. Friday, July 8, 2011 at the Centennial Baptist Church with Elder J. D. Short III officiating.

Private committal services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2011 in the Maple Grove Cemetery.

Sims Funeral Services are in charge of arrangements.

SHIRLEEN YATES

Nancy Shirleen Lay Yates, 85, of Harrodsburg, wife of Floyd Thomas “Tommy” Yates, died Tuesday, July 5, 2011.

Born May 25, 1926 in Dekalb, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Marvin and Rebecca Graham Lay.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Harrodsburg.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Calvin Prentice (Judy) Derringer; three daughters: Kathy (Roy Lee) Pulliam, Debbie Sue Moss and Ann Thomas Wilham, all of Harrodsburg; a brother, John Prentice Lay of Danville and a sister, Geneva Sanders of Harrodsburg, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Colleen Derringer and two sisters, Jewell Boswell and Virginia Yeager.

Services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, July 8, 2011 at Sims Funeral Services with Brother Kenny Queener and Brother Ty Cleeney officiating. Burial will be in the Springhill Cemetery.

Pallbearers are: Bob Richmond, Garnett Ruble, Dan Stoltzfus, David Freeman, Roy Lee Pulliam, Carlos Lester and Scott Huff.Honorary pallbearers are: grandchildren, the Calvary Baptist Church Ladies Sunday School Class and Mildred Drury.

Visitation is Thursday, July 7 from 5 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass or the American Diabetes. Association.

Sims Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.
