RAYMOND WILSON, SR.

Raymond L. Wilson Sr., 89, of Stanford, passed away Sunday, July 24, 2011, at his daughter’s residence.

Born April 26, 1922, in Boyle County, he was a son of the late Martin Adam and Eva Wilson, and he enjoyed a wonderful marriage to his late wife, Mary Evelyn Wilson.

Mr. Wilson was a farmer and heavy equipment operator, and a member of First Church of God. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Survivors include a son, Randall (Jayne Lynn) Wilson of Burgin; two daughters, Charlotte (James) Watts and Cathy (Deannie) Southerland, both of Stanford; three brothers, Alfred (Minnie Lou) Wilson, Robert (Dorothy) Wilson and Jess (Ella Mae) Wilson; two sisters, Alma (Kenneth) Rothwell and Ann Sinn; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday July 26, 2011, at the Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home with the Rev. Norris McCawley. Mr. Wilson’s grandson, the Rev. Stacy Wilson, will officiate. Burial followed in the Wilson Cemetery with full military rites.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Heritage Hospice or Gideon’s International.

HAROLD DARLAND

Harold D. Darland, 73, of Harrodsburg, husband of Betty V. Logue Darland, died Sunday, July 31, 2011 at the UK Medical Center in Lexington.

Born April 4, 1938 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late Marshall and Mable Whitehouse Darland.

He served 12 years in the National Guard and was a meat cutter at Save A Lot. He was a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons: Michael Todd Darland of Lexington, Kelly Lynn Darland of Perryville and Ralph Christopher Darland of Italy and a brother, Marshall Darland of Harrodsburg.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Melissa Darland.

Services will be conducted today, Thursday, Aug. 4, 1 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Bobby Logue, Bob Defoor and Todd Darland officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers are: Robert Logue, Howard Logue, Glenn Logue, Travis Logue, Gabriel Logue, Isaac Matherly, Steven Wiley and Michael Lewis.

Services today, Thursday, Aug. 4 at 1 p.m.

Visitation 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Markey Cancer Center, 800 Rose St # CC301, Lexington, KY 40536-0001.

MARY GRIMES

Mary Catherine Hart “Granny” Grimes, 89, widow of Virgil C. Grimes died Wednesday, July 27.

She was an employee of the Woodford County Transportation Dept. as a special needs monitor.

Survivors include: two daughters, Jackie “Gary” Reynolds of Salvisa and Debbie Turner of Versailles; four grandchildren, Devan Donovan, Cheri Donovan, Tina Purvis, Briana Turner and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 30, at the Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home, Versailles, with Rev. Nancy Farley officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

CORDIA JONES

Cordia Britton Brown Jones, widow of Thomas Harold Brown and Henry Harold Jones, died Friday July 29, 2011 at the age of 102.

A native of Mercer County, she was born May 25, 1909 near Salvisa. She was the daughter of the late Finley and Mary Belle Jones Britton.

She was educated in the Mercer County School system and graduated from McAfee High School in 1926 and then attended and graduated from Fugazzi Business College. She spent more than 50 years in secretarial deed offset work, thirty of which were with Central District Warehouse. A member of St. Paul Catholic Church, she was active in various church groups, including St. Paul Altar Society, Legion of Mary, Guild of St. Paul, Catholic Golden Age, as well as making sandwiches for the homeless. She also was a volunteer at St. Joseph Hospital until the last few months.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn Brown Kissel, a brother Gilbert Henry Britton, and son-in-law Bruce Ledford.

Devoted to her family, she is survived by: one daughter, Brenda Brown Ledford (Bruce), and son-in-law, Paul J. Kissel (Evelynn) and nine grandchildren: Julie Kissel Turok (Robert), Thomas (Patricia) Kissel, Mark (Kirsten) Kissel, Amy Kissel Brown (Marty) and Megan Kissel Lewis (Wayne), John (Cheryl) Ledford, Leigh Ann Ledford Collins (William), Stephen Ledford, and Melinda Ledford Haungs. She was a loving Me Ma to 20 great grandchildren.

Funeral service were conducted Tuesday, August 2, at the St. Paul Catholic Church with burial following at Calvary Cemetery.

Pall Bearers will be Thomas Kissel, John Ledford, Stephen Ledford, Ray York, William Collins and Mark Kissel.

Honorary Pallbearers were Robert Turok, Jeff Turok, Eric Ledford, Josh Kissel, Stan Saunier, Glen Jones and Marty Brown.

Contributions can be made to Markey Cancer Center, in memory of Marilyn Brown Kissel, or Hospice in Memory of Bruce Ledford.

ELSIE LEWIS

Elsie Jane Lewis, 76, of Harrodsburg, wife of Charles Lewis, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2011 at her home in Harrodsburg.

Born April 3, 1935 in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late Amos and Lona Waldridge Harley.

She was a retired Corning Glass inspector and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Georgetta (Stephen) Bailey; two sisters: Ruby Onita (Chester) Travillian and Vernetta (J.L.) Walker, both of Harrodsburg; a grandson, Bruce (Charissa) Wade; a granddaughter, Angelia (Matt) Swabey; three stepgrandchildren: Aaron (Ashley) Bailey, Stephanie (Brett) Anness and Adina Bailey; four great-grandchildren and a stepgreat-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Angelia Sue Lewis; two brothers, Milton and George Harley and two sisters, Vertie Durr and Bonnie Watts.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Lester Caldwell and Kenny Queener officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers are: Larry Yeager, Tony Pinkston, Nelson Cline, David Wade, Charlie Baker, Mark Walker, Jr. and Travillian and Bob Richmond.

Visitation today, Thursday, Aug. 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

DANNY MILLER

Danny Miller, 53 of Danville died July 30, 2011 at his residence.

Born July 10, 1958 in Danville to Doris Faye Miller and the late Melvin Miller.

He was a member of the Danville High School Class of 1976, he was a skilled carpenter who lived in Fort Myers, Florida and in Texas.

He is survived by: his mother; a daughter, Brandy Sheron, a grandson, Zachary, both of Danville; a sister, Marlene Warner, of Burgin; two brothers, Chuck Miller of Danville and Tony Miller of Ft. Myers, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted at 12 p.m., Wednesday, August 3, at Bellevue Cemetery, Danville.

Pallbearers will be Stan Richards, Charles "Poodle" Pendergraft, Dale "Smo" Benedict, David Grisby and Jackie Underwood.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Richards and Bobby Merrick.

Visitation will be 11 a.m., until service time at 337 W. Broadway (across the street from Stith Funeral Home).

Stith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HAZEL PULLIAM

Hazel Frances Pulliam, 83, widow of Garnett Cecil Pulliam, died Saturday, July 30, 2011 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Born December 21, 1927 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Davis Bottom and Jenny Dearinger Hungate.

She was retired from the service department at Signet Systems in Harrodsburg and was a member of the Shakertown Baptist Church. She enjoyed being a member of the Red Hat Society at Heritage Hall Nursing Home, playing bingo, traveling and going to horse races.

She is survived by a son, Tony Bruce Pulliam of Burgin; two daughters, Vickie (Glenn) Wilson of Midway and C-Ann (Billy) Robinson of Salvisa; a sister, Bertha Radier of Tuscon, Ariz.; two grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Hungate, Sr., and two sisters, Janie Reynolds and Ida Woodson.

Graveside services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2 at the Spring Hill Cemetery with Bro. George Dye officiating.

Pallbearers were: Chris Gammon, John Robinson, Billy Robinson and Glenn Wilson.

Honorary pallbearers were: Ronnie Hungate, Earl Hungate, Jr., Steven Sims, Mike Robertson, Davis Reynolds and Dea Rhineheimer.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Mercer Relay for Life, P.O. Box 411, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

ANN ROBINSON

Ann C. Robinson, age 69, of Danville, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011.

Born Aug. 29, 1941 in Louisville, she was the daughter of the late Carl Campbell and Ruby Baker Dean. She was a retired Cricketeer Manufacturing seamstress.

She is survived by a daughter, Stacy L. Lake of Danville; three sons: Thomas E. Robinson, II. of Lexington, Martin D. Robinson of Danville and Michael K. Robinson of Dunnville; a brother: Terry Campbell of Salvisa and five grandchildren.

Services will be conducted 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 5 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Wendell Johnson and Jim Kingrey officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers are: Thomas, Mark and Keith Robinson, Tim Lake and Logan and Noah Conley.

Visitation is Thursday, Aug. 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Humane Society, P.O. Box 314, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

DEWEY SHEPHERD

Dewey Warren Shepherd, 87, of Burgin, widower of Margaret D. Shepherd died Tuesday, July 26, 2011.

Born March 5, 1924 in Smithtown in McCreary County, he was one of ten children of the late John Marion and Eva Inman Shepherd.

He was a 1942 graduate of Science Hill High School and attended Washington, Junior College in Iowa. He entered the Navy in 1943 and served as a fighter pilot off the USS Fanshaw Bay Carrier. He received seven citations including two Presidential Citations, four Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After his military service he farmed and worked for Greyhound Bus Lines for fifteen years. He later worked as a guard at LaGrange State Reformatory, a bus driver for the Oldham County School System and worked for the A.S.C. office in Oldham county. He retired from the U.S. Tobacco Service after twenty years of service as a tobacco grader. He served on the board for the Farm Bureau and was a director on the board of the former Farm Credit Bank. He was a member of the Burgin Baptist Church.

He is survived by a son, Jerry (Connie) Shepherd; two brothers, Ancil Shepherd of Danville and Theodore Shepherd of Somerset; a sister, Flonnie Farmer of Ohio; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A graveside service with Navy military Rites was conducted at Friday, July 29, 2011 at the Spring Hill Cemetery with Rev. Carl McCray officiating.

His grandchildren served as pallbearers.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Mercer Baptist Association, Patriot Gospel Quartet or the Parkinson’s Association.

TIMOTHY ABBOTT

Timothy David “Tim” Abbott, 45, of Danville, passed away Tuesday August 2, 2011.

Born Nov. 11, 1965 in Carrolton, he is the son of Graham L. Abbott of Whitesburg and Lou Ann Jones Abbott of Danville.

He was a graduate of Paintsville High School and attended Eastern Kentucky University. He worked at the Burgin Independent School System where he also served as an Assistant Basketball Coach. He was a Member of Centenary United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents he is survived by: Kellie Goble Abbott; one brother, Stephen Paul Abbott and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services were conducted Friday, August 5, at the Centenary Christian Life Center on Perryville Road in Danville by Dr. Quentin Scholtz. Burial followed in Bedford Cemetery in Bedford, KY.

Honorary Pallbearers were the Burgin Basketball Team.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Centenary United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1441 Perryville Rd., Danville, KY 40422 or the Special Persons Advocacy Network, c/o Community Trust Bank, P.O. Box 1458, Danville, KY 40422.
