DORIS MOSELEY

Doris Gayle Moseley, 70, of Harrodsburg, wife of James Leroy Moseley, died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011 at the Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Born March 6, 1941 in Bowling Green, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Marguerite Smith Kern Hardy. She was a Tic Toc Nursery School teacher and worked at Ellis’ Florist. She was a member of the Echo Homemakers Club, "The Lunch Bunch" and Harrodsburg Christian Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Brent (Christy) Moseley and Scott (Meg) Moseley; two brothers, Charles (Jo) Hardy and Fred (Pam) Kern and four grandsons, Dane Metcalf, Colin Moseley, Braden Moseley and Camden Moseley.

Services were conducted Sunday, Sept. 4, at the Harrodsburg Christian Church with Phil Williams officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Dane Metcalf, Colin Moseley, Braden Moseley, Camden Moseley, Chuck Bugg, David Taylor, Brian Hudson and Jeff Hildebrandt.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Harrodsburg Christian Church Youth Fund, 305 S. Main St., Harrodsburg.

SADIE SMOCK

Sadie Ray Smock, 73, wife of Desmond G. Smock, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011 at her residence.

Born Nov. 19, 1937 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Gobel and Lettie Mae Carrier Smith. She had worked at Cricketeer and Hall Mack. She was a member of Benton Baptist Church and enjoyed humming birds and gardening.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Michael L. (Judy) Votaw of Danville and Ricky A. (Mary Jane) Votaw of Lawrenceburg; a daughter, Kathie (Keith) Brim of Mt. Wolf, Pa.; a stepson, Kenneth Smock of Gravel Switch; a stepdaughter, Sandra L. Smock of Parksville; a sister, Helen Russell of Harrodsburg; five grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and several great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister Violet “Dot” Brown.

Services were conducted Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Larry Hale officiating. Burial was in Deep Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Brad Votaw, Chad Votaw, Ernie Vineyard, Ronnie Best, Kenny Smock, Jim Howard and Sandra Smock.

THOMAS SOUTHERS

Thomas E. Southers, 53, of Burgin, died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011 at his residence.

Born March 23, 1958 in Jackson, he was the son of the late Louise Watkins Southers and Bill Southers of Mercer County. He was a self employed plumber and enjoyed hunting.

He is survived by his stepmother Shelia Southers of Mercer County; a son, Thomas (Allie) Southers of Burgin, a daughter, Heather (Josh) Southers Gunkel of Nicholasville; three brothers: Don (Donna) Southers of Nicholasville; Bruce (Julie) Southers of Covington and Berry (Jenny) Southers of Ohio; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jacob Gunkel.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

AMBROSE BURNS

Ambrose Burns Jr., 94, of Burgin, widower of Bessie Louise Spurlock Burns, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born Sept. 11, 1917 in Clay County, he was the son of the late Roscoe and Sarah Hensley Burns. He was a retired employee of the Commonwealth of Kentucky where he worked in the Child Support Division and was also a former Kentucky State Trooper. He was an Army Veteran of WWII, a member of the Masonic Lodge and attended the Burgin Church of God.

He is survived by three sons: Jennings (Janice) Burns of Harrodsburg, Robert (Lillian) Burns of London and Gary (Patricia) Burns of Tyner; a daughter, Phyllis (Donnie) Irvin of Burgin; two sisters, Doris Jean Burns of Dayton, Ohio and Olzie Bowling of Booneville; a half sister, Carol Bowling; two half brothers, Roscoe Burns Jr. and Rondall Burns; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and his caregiver Wanda Mergard.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Marie Lawsons and Willie Henson and a brother, Jennings Burns.

Services were conducted Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Donnie Irvin officiating. Burial with military Honors was in the Burgin Memorial Gardens.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

PAMELA CHESER

Pamela Hill Cheser, 54, of Doe Run Road, Springfield passed away at 3:30 p.m., Saturday September 11, 2001 at her home.

Survivors include: her husband: Mike Cheser; one daughter, Tina Thompson of Springfield; one-step-son, Kevin Cheser of Versailles seven grandchildren; her mother, Mickey Hill of Springfield; three brothers, Dennis Hill of Springfield, Rocky Hill of Harrodsburg and Tony Hill of Willisburg

Funeral Services were held Tuesday September 13, at the Carey & Son Funeral Home with burial in the New Hope Cemetery.

MARY DARLAND

Mary Eva Cannada Darland, 80, widow of Wade Thomas Darland Jr. died Friday, Sept. 9, 2011 at her residence.

Born Oct. 3, 1930 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Leslie Lee and Maudie Jane Releford Cannada. She was a retired clerk at the Wearen-James Drug Store and member of the Harrodsburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking and her flowers.

She is survived by three sons: Leslie Thomas (Cecilia Ann) Darland of Harrodsburg, Jerry Wayne (Sandi) Darland of Danville and Anthony Bonta Darland of Nicholasville; two sisters: Ruby (Bud) Carey and Dorothy (Carroll) Gritton, both of Harrodsburg; nine grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Laney Brooke Darland.

Services were conducted Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Geoff Barrett and Bro. Larry Hale officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Joey Gritton, Eric Darland, Scott Darland, John Hankla, Jordan Darland, Tyler Darland, Nathan Darland and Blake Darland.

LAVILA DOBSON

Lavila Harmon Dobson, 89, widow of James David Dobson who died in 1999, died at her home in Nicholasville Sunday, September 11, 2011.

She was a native of Virginia born May 4, 1922, to the late Posie L. and Clora M. Harmon.

She was a retired school teacher having taught for 29 years. She began her career in a one room school house in Virginia after graduating from Madison College in Virginia then later taught in the Paris City School system all the while attending the University of Kentucky to earn her teaching certificate and became an elementary teacher at Arlington. She had saved the letters that her husband had sent her during the his time in the service and was writing a book called “Dear Teacher”. She enjoyed playing bridge, gardening and bowling for which she had many trophies.

Survivors include: her children, James David (Barbara) Dobson, Jr., Harrodsburg, Bonnie Reynolds, FL., Edwina (Robert) Simpson, Hickman, KY., Lannie Dobson, Danville, and Shirley Dobson and her fiancé, Ernest Johns, Nicholasville; brother, Gerald (Arlene) Harmon, NJ, sisters Shirley (Bob) Steele and Sandra (David) Peters, all of VA, sister-in-law Peggy Harmon, TN; brother-in-law, Francis Cavey, MD, 16 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren as well as one who preceded her in death, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was one of nine children of which four brothers and a sister have preceded her in death.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 17, at the Lexington Primitive Baptist Church and she will be laid to rest beside her husband in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, September 16, at the Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home.

Honoring her as pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Lexington Primitive Baptist Church.

LULA GABHART

Lula Gibson Gabhart, 90, of Clarksville, TN., formerly of Springfield, died at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9 at Gateway Medical Center in Clarksville, TN.

She had lived and worked at Hale-Polin-Robinson Funeral Home in Springfield for 30 years prior to moving.

She is survived by two sons, Harold Gabhart of Clarksville, TN and Glen Gabhart of Osawatomie, KS; one niece, Jackie Reed of Springfield, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and three great-nieces.

Funeral services for Lula Gibson Gabhart was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 13, at the Hale-Polin-Robinson Funeral Home in Springfield with burial in Spring Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg.

MICHAEL KNIGHT

Michael William “Bill” Knight, 68, of Fuquay Varina, N.C., husband of Cathy Marie Ison Knight, died Monday, Sept. 12, 2011 at his residence.

Born in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Ralph Thomas and Mary Frances Sexton Knight.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Lee Ann (Bill) Horner; three sons: Scott Thomas (Jennifer) Knight, Eric Jonathan (Maureen) Knight and Nicholas Wade (Erica) Knight; a brother, Ralph Allen (Linda) Knight; a sister, Frances Jeanene (Kelly) Thompson; 10 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be prior to the service Saturday from 12:30 until 2 p.m.

RUSSELL LESTER

Russell C. Lester, 77, Danville, widower of Margaret Jenkins Lester, died Monday, Sept. 12, 2011 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born July 15, 1934 in Boyle County, he was the son of the late Edward A. and Margaret Jewell Milburn Lester. He was a Corning Glass Ribbon Machine Operator and a member of the Eller’s Memorial Baptist Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Gloria Jean (Terry) Browning of Lexington; a son, Russell Dale (Cheryl) Lester of Harrodsburg; a brother, J. L. (Mildred) Lester of Villages, Fla.; a sister, Anna Lou (Marvin) Carpenter of Boyle County; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services held 11 a.m. today, Thursday, Sept. 15 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with burial in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers are: Ed Carpenter, Henry Peavler, Eddie Long, Dallas Estes, Tony Pinkston and Jesse Thomas.

Visitation 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Eller’s Memorial Baptist Church or Heritage Hospice.

RICHARD MCKINLEY

Richard Carter McKinley, 73, husband of Carol Faye Knifley McKinley, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011 at his residence.

Born December 23, 1937 in Campbellsville, he was the son of the late James Richard and Barbara Netherland McKinley. He was retired after thirty two years as Director of Curriculum Development with Standard Publishing Company in Cincinnati, Ohio and was a member of The Carpenter’s Christian Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Gwen (Lance) Ladd of Danville and Lisa (Troy) Clear of Portland, Ore.; a sister Malissa (Gene) Garlichs of Manchester, N.H. and four grandchildren.

Services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2011 at The Carpenter’s Christian Church with Lance Ladd, Greg Warren and Troy Clear officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15 and after 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16 at The Carpenter’s Christian Church.

A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. C.S.T. (4 p.m. E.S.T.) at the Roley Cemetery in Adair County.

Serving as pallbearers are: Bart Knifley, Bobby Knifley, Gene Knifley, Jeff Knifley, Joe Knifley and Lyle Knifley.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Richard McKinley Scholarship Fund, c/o The Carpenter’s Christian Church, 1340 Hwy. 127 Bypass, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.
