ELIZABETH ELKS

Elizabeth “Libby” Elks, 54, of Danville, widow of Robert Elks, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011.

Born Dec. 13, 1956, she was the daughter of Lucy Jenkins Voorhies of Harrodsburg and the late Marion Voorhies. She was a paralegal for Sheehan, Barnett, Dean and Pennington and a member of Dry Branch Baptist Church.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by two daughters: Kristina R. (David) Grubb and Stephanie A. Elks (Jeremy Brummett), both of Danville; a brother, Dennis (Barbara) Voorhies of Burgin; two sisters: Trudy Stevens of Danville and Regina Voorhies of Covington and two grandchildren.

Services were held Friday, Sept. 23 at Stith Funeral Home with Bill Barnett and Ray Cameron officiating. Burial was in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were: Lane Stevens, R. C. Cameron, Trent Arkeman, David Grubb, Jeremy Brummett and Delbert Terry.

Honorary pallbearers were: Gary Atwood, Butch Elks, Ray Cameron, Bobby Fields, Bill Barnett, Vince Pennington, James Sheehan and Alec Russell.

Donations are suggested to the American Cancer Society and Heritage Hospice.

JAMES ELLIOTT

James Elliott, 69, of Danville, died Tuesday, September 20, 2011, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

He was born July 3, 1942 in Stanford to the late John Albert and Cynthia Bell Manuel Elliott.

He was a self-employed painter and a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

Survivors include: his wife of 44 years, Brenda Elliott of Danville; two sons, James Allen Elliott (Amy) of Stanford and William Albert Elliott (Katherine) of Moreland; three daughters, Patricia Marie Martin (Anthony Smith) of Danville, Deborah Lynn McConnell (Darrell) of Crab Orchard and Kendra Dawn Elliott (Johnny) of Danville; a brother, Carl Eugene Elliott (Jo Ann) of Stanford; a sister, Dollie Morgan (Carlos) of Harrodsburg; 16 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, three nieces and six nephews.

Funeral service were held Friday, September 23, at the Spurlin Funeral Home in Stanford. Reverend Vola Brown will be officiating. Burial was in Berry Cemetery.

Casketbearers were Allen Elliott, William Elliott, Darrell McConnell, Tony Smith, William Adams and Johnny Hellard;

Honorary Bearers were grandsons, Tyler Jasper, Anthony King, Austin Mullins, Samuel Elliott, Brandon Martin, Daniel Martin, Kody Mullins and John "Bubba" Martin

MURRELL GABHART

Murrell Gabhart, 93, of Harrodsburg, widower of Nantie Bell Reed Gabhart, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2011 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 10, 1918 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late Morgan and Lottie Roberts Gabhart. He was a retired farmer, an Army veteran of WWII, and a member of the DAV, Farm Bureau and Mt. Zion Church of Christ, but attended the Harrodsburg Church of Christ.

He is survived by a daughter, Laura Lou (Don) Bronn of Owensboro; a son, Robert Lewis (Sondra) Gabhart of Euless, Texas; a sister, Mable G. Berry of Glasgow; a brother, Chester Gabhart of Harrodsburg; three grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.

Services were conducted Monday, Sept. 26 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Keith Greer officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to a charity of one’s choice.

JAMES HAMMACK

James Lee Hammack, 27, of Mount Washington, passed away Monday September 19, 2011 at his residence.

He was born on June 18, 1984 in Marion County.

James was a self-employed carpenter.

James is survived by: his father, Roy Lee Hammack of Harrodsburg; mother, Joyce Ann Lanham King, of Lebanon; paternal grandfather, Lee Hammack of Harrodsburg; maternal grandparents, Willie Lee and Wilma Betty Lanham of Lebanon,; one brother, Michael Shane Lanham, of Taylorsville; and one sister, Bonnie Ellen Lanham, of Perryville.

Funeral services were held Friday, September 23, at the Bosley Funeral Home in Lebanon with interment in Old Liberty Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that expressions of sympathy be made to Bosley Funeral Home to be used toward funeral expenses.

HERTALINE HOCKERSMITH

Hertaline B. Hockersmith, 93, of Salvisa, widow of John W. Hockersmith Jr., died Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born July 29, 1918 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Grundy and Ethel Gritton Brown. She was a member of the Harrodsburg Church of Christ and Christian Union. She was a homemaker, retired purchasing agent for the KY Department of Finance and a music teacher.

She is survived by a daughter, Jeanne Ann Brogle of Salvisa; a son, John W. (Linda) Hockersmith III of Salvisa; eight grandchildren; 16 great- grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Dillard Brown; a half sister, Ethel L. Johnson and a grandson, David Wesley Brogle.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30 at the Harrodsburg Church of Christ and Christian Union on Curdsville Road, Burgin, with Bro. Johnny Hockersmith officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers are: Steve Brogle, John W. Hockersmith IV, Justin Ball, Derek Ball, Scott Brogle, Travis Brogle, Kyle Brogle and Austin Hart.

Honorary bearers are: Trent Young, Nathan Baker and her former music students.

Visitation is today, Thursday, Sept. 29 from 5 – 8 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the Gideon Bible Fund.

WILLIAM HOLLIDAY

William Ralph “Paps” Holliday, 87, of Harrodsburg, widower of Wilma Gabhart Holliday, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born July 14, 1924 in Washington County, he was the son of the late B. D. and Rae Ellen Royalty Holliday. He was a retired Spears Construction supervisor, a gunsmith, a charter member of the Magnolia Street Christian Church and a member of the NRA.

He is survived by two daughters: Brenda Ellen Meehan of Atlanta, Ga. and Sherrow (Marion) Williams of Smithville, Mo.; three sons: William Ray (Bonnie) Holliday of Versailles, Mo.; Robert “Bobby” (Linda) Holliday of Harrodsburg and Danny (Tammy) Holliday of Harrodsburg; 14 grandchildren; 27 great- grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 28 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Caleb Penwell officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Lee and Adam Hart, Wayne Holliday, Patrick Morgan, Dion Long, Kenneth Goodlett, Hobert Cheatham and Ryan Cook.

Honorary pallbearers were: Paul Votaw, Charlie Hensley, Bud Isham, L. D. Nickles, Ralph Phillips, Mark Hagen and Donny Corn.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Heritage Hospice, P.O. Box 1213, Danville, KY 40422.

AUBREY HOLT

Aubrey Jackson Holt, 99, passed away September 24, 2011 in Danville.

Born February 1, 1912 in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Henry and Elizabeth Crow Holt.

Aubrey was a member of the Church of God. He was a retired minister and evangelist; he had pastored various churches including Mitchellsburg Church of God. He was once a member of the gospel singing group known as the Hill Top Trio. They sang at special events and on various radio stations including WHBN in Harrodsburg. He was also a retired farmer, and a former employee of Jackson Chair Company a former guard for American Greeting of Danville.

Survivors include: three sons, Billy, Marvin and Fairley Holt, all of Parksville; two daughters, Elsie Wofford and Alma Plumer, both of Parksville; two brothers, Allen (Norma) Holt of Junction City and Frank (Dellatene) Holt of Crothersville, IN. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his wife Ella Baugh Holt whom he married August 9, 1932 in Boyle County. In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by a son, Henry Jackson Holt, two grandchildren, Stewart L. Wofford and Troy E. Holt, two brothers, James and John Holt, two sisters, Virgie Baugh and Bertie Clarkson.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, September 28, at the Wilder Funeral Home in Perryville by Rev. Terry Holt and Rev. Bobby Abbott, with burial in the Holt Family Cemetery.

VICKIE MCGUIRE

Vickie Royalty McGuire, 53, wife of Anthony Wayne McGuire, of Harrodsburg, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011 at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.

Born April 17, 1958 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of Oneda Mobley Royalty of Burgin and the late Earl Royalty. She was a 1976 graduate of Burgin High School where she served on the Annual Committee and was a charter member of the Lady Bulldogs Basketball Team. She retired as cashier from Dairy Queen and was an active member of Shawnee Run Baptist Church where she faithfully served the children’s ministry which included serving as Vacation Bible School director for 18 years.

In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by a son, John Michael Wayne McGuire of Louisville; a sister, Sandy (Joey) Hardin of Burgin; a brother, Doug (Eleanor) Royalty of Lexington; mother-in-law, Eula Rousey McGuire of Harrodsburg and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services were conducted Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011 at Shawnee Run Baptist Church with Dr. Ralph Neal and John Michael Wayne McGuire officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Brendan Hardin, Jeremy Hudnell, Jason Grow, Gary Royalty, Bobby Gene Royalty and Dexter Royalty.

Honorary pallbearers were Liz Otto and Doug Royalty.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Strive Student Ministries, c/o Shawnee Run Baptist Church, 1490 Shakertown Road, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

JAMES MOORE

James L. Moore, 93, husband of 62 years to Pauline Fain Moore, died Wednesday September 21, 2011 at his home.

Born in Harrodsburg, July 30, 1918, he was the son of the late Lillard Price and Minnie Traugott Moore.

Mr. Moore was a US Marine serving in the South Pacific during WWII and was the co-owner of Springs Service Center with his partner of nearly 60 years, Travis Smithers, who preceded him in death by only two months. He was a member of American Legion Post 341 and a founding member of Stonewall Wesleyan Methodist Church (now New Hope Community Church). At the age of 14 Mr. Moore began work in the horse industry for Jack Keene. He was a bird-dog trainer, winning many field trials, as well as an avid gardener and fisherman. He was called by many the best carburetor man in Lexington.

Survivors include: three daughters, Carolyn Erley (Greg Robinson), Cynthiana, Paulette Towner, Leesburg, VA and Jennifer Margaret Moore (Ron Fortunato), NYC; grandchildren, James Michael (Caroline) Erley, Georgetown, Mieka Erley (Sam Hodgkin), Chicago, and Paris Larkin Towner, Leesburg, VA; two great-grandchildren, Lee Pham and Madeline Erley, Georgetown; and two brothers, Robert B. (Dorothy) Moore and Donald (Mildred) Moore, Lexington.

Siblings preceding him in death were Helen (Joe) Tilton and Kenneth Moore.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 26, at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Road, Lexington, by Rev David Durst, Rev Larry Freels, Rev Joe Wayne Wright, and Brian McLaughlin. Entombment followed at Blue Grass Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were James Michael Erley, Aaron and Jeff Waits, Luke and Kyle McLaughlin, Nicholas Barbieri and Rusty Parsons.

Honorary pallbearers were Raymond Waits, Clint Sherrod, Frank Wells, Charles Hendron, Houston Willis, David Hamilton, Tony Carter and Joseph Barbieri.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Dr., Lexington, KY 40504, or one’s favorite charity.

LAWRENCE PEAVLER

Lawrence Boyd Peavler, 82, of Harrodsburg, husband of Lila Mae Harley Peavler, died Monday, Sept. 26, 2011 at the Select Specialty Hospital in Lexington.

Born Sept. 25, 1929 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Willis and Leona Gritton Peavler. He was a retired construction worker, member of Local Union #189 and a member of the Pioneer Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Brenda (Bobby) Hinkle of Danville; a son, David Lawrence (Cindy) Peavler of Harrodsburg; five siblings: Marvin Cloyd Peavler of Boyle County, Margaret Irene Hicks of Harrodsburg, J. B. Peavler of Indiana, Edward Peavler of Florida and Helen Mae Isham of Mackville; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by seven siblings: Thelma and Sarah Ella Peavler, Francis Jewell Tobey, Donald Ray, Condit B., Leon and Willis Errol Peavler.

Services will be held 2 p.m. today, Thursday, Sept. 29 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Steve James and Brandon Carrier officiating. Burial will be in the Bethel Baptist Cemetery.

Pallbearers are: Scott and Eric Peavler, Brad Hinkle, Hunter Ballard, Kevin Isham, Kent and Keith Rogers and Eric and Paul Harley.

Honorary pallbearers are: Steve Vinyard, Earl Howard, Robert Phillips, Butch Merchant, Jack Atwell, Garnett and David Cinnamon, James Grimes, John Gumm, Harry Harmon, Jerry Mitchum, Ralph Byrd, Coy Coffman, Bryant Merchant, Truman Curtsinger, Chris Cornish and Brent Steele.

Visitation 5 – 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Gideon Bible Fund.

JOAN SALLEE

Olive Joan Sallee, 77, of Niles, Michigan, formerly of Bakersfield, Calif. was ushered away from this life here on earth to her Lord and Savior on Sept. 25, 2011 at 10 a.m.

Joan was born on March 7, 1934 to the late Harold and Gladys Buescher Oliver in Sparta, Ill.

She was married to Ansel “A. J.” Sallee, Aug. 29, 1953 at a ceremony in El Paso, Texas. They shared 58 wonderful years of marriage together, raising their family of four children, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

After their children were a little older, Joan returned to college to realize her life-long dream of becoming a nurse. Nursing was a career that she was passionate about, and she loved being a nurse every day that she worked. She was well-loved by her patients and respected by her co-workers. She always put her patients first, with many of her co-workers remarking that Joan never walked to her patients, but rather ran to them.

At home, she was a devoted wife to her husband and a loving mother to their children. Her husband often raved that she was “the best cook in the world.” She was also talented in handcrafts and sewing. She was an excellent seamstress and was honored to sew both of her daughters’ wedding gowns herself. As a woman of God, she was devoted to her spiritual life and reading the Bible daily. In addition to working and traveling overseas with her husband, they also took mission trips to foreign countries to accomplish what they felt God had called them to do.

Joan is survived by her husband, A. J. Sallee of Niles, Mich.; her daughter, Patricia Scott and husband Pat Scott of Niles, Mich.; son, Harold “Buck” Sallee of Bakersfield, Calif.; son, Scott Sallee of Fresno, Calif.; daughter, Paula Sallee-Robinson and husband Scott Robinson of Bakersfield, Calif.; grandchildren: Marc Scott, Matthew Scott, Nicole Sallee, Jaime Sallee-Nadal and Bradley Robinson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister, Margaret Snapp of Park Hill, Okla.; brother, Richard McLoy of Lucerne Valley, Calif. and sister, Georgeanne Paris of Post Falls, Idaho.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold Oliver and Gladys Johnston; her sisters, Ruth and Judith; her brothers, Richard “Jack” Moyser and James McLoy.

Services were held on Sept. 28, 2011 at 1 p.m. with visitation one hour prior at Brown Funeral Home in Niles, Mich. On Monday, Oct. 3, 2011 at 12:30 p.m. there will be a service with a visitation one hour prior at Mission Family Mortuary in Bakersfield, Calif. She will be laid to rest at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery in Bakersfield.

Memorial donations may be made in Joan’s memory to the National Kidney Foundation.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown Funeral Home-Niles.
