VIRGIL SANDERS

Virgil Clay Sanders, 76, the father of Dale Sanders of Paris, and Karen Sanders Kirkes of St. Louis, MO died Monday, September 26th at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital in Harrodsburg, after a short illness.

A native of Jessamine County, he was born August 13, 1935, to the late Otis Floyd and Emily York Sanders.

Until July of this year, Virgil had lived in Ocala, FL for the past 26 years where he was the owner of Sanders Auction Company; as well as a realtor, and an auctioneer. He was the former owner of Hedge Crest Farm located in Carlisle, Kentucky. He worked as a farm manager and trainer for Pin Oak Stud in Versailles, Kentucky; was assistant manager for Main Chance Farm in Lexington, Kentucky; and most recently worked at The Ocala Breeders Sales Company, located in Ocala, FL.

In addition to his son and daughter, he is survived by: a daughter-in-law Cheryl Sanders; two grandchildren, Stephanie (Duncan) Crosby and Jeremy (Kelsey) Sanders, his wife Kelsey; a great-grandson, Will Crosby; a sister-in-law, Barbara Sanders; and a brother-in-law, Glen Jones.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Orbin Ray and Delbert Sanders and two sisters, Opal Cheek Brown and Ruth Evelyn Jones.

Services will be held Friday, September 30th at 12:30 p.m. at the Hager and Cundiff Funeral Home in Nicholasville and he will be laid to rest at Camp Nelson National Cemetery, with military honors.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 29, at the funeral home.

DORIS SIMS

Doris Stratton Robinson Sims, 85, of Danville, widow of Marshall Foster Sims, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011 at her home.

Born Nov. 7, 1925 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Delbert and Reva Stratton Robinson. She was a long time member of First Baptist Church in Danville and loved to garden and take care of the farm. She retired from Bell South where she was operator supervisor and was active in the Pioneers Club.

She is survived by a sister, Frances Robinson McClure of Louisville; a brother-in-law, John P. Lay of Danville and several nieces, nephews and caregivers.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Hilda Robinson Sims and Emma Robinson Lay and a brother, Thomas Edwin “Buddy” Robinson.

Services were conducted Monday, Sept. 27 at Stith Funeral Home and Family Center in Junction City with Rev. Timothy J. Mathis and John David Lay officiating. Burial was in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers were the Dorcas Sunday School Class.

Memorial donations are suggested to Gideons International or the Salvation Army.

VIVIAN SIMS

Mrs. Vivian Wilson Hester Sims died at age 87, September 26, 2011. Mrs. Sims Lived at McDowell Place of Danville, formerly of Dogwood Drive, Stanford. She was the widow of Wesley H. Sims.

Mrs. Sims was born October 11, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late Amanda Ursula Burnett Wilson and Chester Campbell Wilson.

Mrs. Sims was a long standing member of Stanford Baptist Church and a retired book keeper for Lincoln County National Bank.

She is survived by her three sons and their wives: Henry Gerald (Katherine) Hester of Lexington, Jon Campbell (Judy) Hester of Stanford and Jimmy Lee (Judith) Hester of Stanford; a step-daughter, Terry J. Sims Campbell of Louisville, KY; seven grandchildren, Henry Hardin Hester II (Kristina) of Pittsburg, PA, John Campbell Hester II (Alison) of Corolla, NC, Sarah Hester Sheene (Scott) of Stanford, David Brackstan Duncan (Tonya) of Winchester, James Zachary (Eli) Hester of Bagdad and Amanda S. Hester (Damon) Foster of Stanford, KY; step-grandchildren, Cary B. (Kathy) Howard of Lexington, , Gordon (Ann) Campbell Jr. of Louisville, Jamie Campbell (Maurice) Megginson of Lynchburg, VA, Wesley Aaran Campbell of Louisville, KY; twelve great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Audrey J. W. Hickmott of Warren, MI and Mrs. Delphine C. W. (Paul) Parrott of Lexington, KY; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mildred Hester Goodwin of Stanford, Mrs. Georgia S. Hoover of Harrodsburg and Mrs. Patsy Sims of Burgin; two special nieces, Mrs. Ursula Hickmott (Kenneth) Hess of Warren, MI and Mrs. Cynthia Parrott (Scott) Beebout of Lexington; a special nephew, Michael Craig (Cynthia) Parrott of Lexington, KY.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry Hardin Hester, the father of her three sons and by one infant sister and three infant brothers.

A private, family graveside service and burial will be at Buffalo Springs Cemetery, Stanford.

Memorials are suggested to Heritage Hospice, P.O. Box 1213, Danville, KY 40423; or Gideon International or Lincoln County Educational Fund, Inc., P.O. Box 423, Stanford, KY 40484.

Spurlin Funeral Home in Stanford was in charge of arrangements.

MILDRED STEVENS

Mildred Stevens, 84, of Crab Orchard, passed away Wednesday, September 21st, at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital in Harrodsburg. She was the widow of Henry Clay Stevens.

Mildred was born in Harlan County, KY on May 31, 1927. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Ellen Howard.

She was a member of the Block Pentecostal Church.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews and sister-in-laws, Mary and Beverly Howard

In addition to her husband and parents, Mildred was preceded in death by six brothers, Ben, John, Calloway, Jess, Carl & Brown Lee Howard and sisters, Elsie Osborne, Bobbie Lawrence, Grace Belcher and Geneva Lear.

Services were held Sunday, September 25, 2011 at the McKnight Funeral Home Chapel in Crab Orchard with Bro. Jeff Osborne officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Springs Cemetery.

KATHY STRATTON

Kathy Stratton, 55, of Harrodsburg, wife of Drew Pearson Stratton, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born June 13, 1956 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Buelah Sims Blacketer.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Amanda April (Heriberto) Stratton of Springfield; two sons: Rocky Dale (Amber) Stratton and Jason McDaniel (Stephanie) Stratton, both of Harrodsburg; two sisters, Elizabeth Butler of Nicholasville and Lora (Troy) Smith of Lawrenceburg; two brothers, Bobby (Jo) Blacketer and Connie Blacketer, both of Harrodsburg.

She was preceded in death by four brothers: Billy, James, Terry and Roy Blacketer Jr. and two sisters, Jean Adams and Margaret Blacketer.

Services were conducted Sunday, Sept. 25 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Joey Turpin officiating. Burial was in the Battle Cemetery, Springfield.

Pallbearers were: Heriberto Escamilla, Jeff, John, Wayne and Bob Blacketer, Matthew Shannon and Chris Stevens.

PAMELA TOVEY

Pamela Lee Tovey, 57, of Mercer County, widow of Glenn Smith and James Tovey, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 5, 1953 in Royal Oaks, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Frederick Edward and Joan Jones. She was a homemaker and enjoyed collecting owls, watching Lifetime movies, playing video games and taking care of her animals.

She is survived by four sons: Benjamin William Smith of Harrodsburg, Phillip Tovey and Joshua David Tovey, both of Knoxville, Tenn. and Casey Joe Tovey of Streamwood, Ill.; three daughters: Tiffany Lee Smith and Julianne Tovey, both of Knoxville, Tenn. and Cynthia Ann Tovey of Saint Claire Shores, Mich.; a brother, Donald Jones of Michigan; two sisters, Janet Melcher of Florida and Debbie Watkins of Georgia; five grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and her life long friend, Kitty Harmon.

She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Morgan Helene Cleary.

A private memorial service was held.

Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

JOHN UNDERWOOD

John “J. T.” Underwood, 70, of Stanford, husband of Della Bradley Underwood, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born July 23, 1941 in Boyle County, he was a son of the late John and Dorothy Poynter Underwood. He was a longtime employee of Papa John’s as a delivery person. He was a Navy veteran, a member of AMVETS, VFW, American Legion and enjoyed fishing, sports and UK sports.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children: Tim (Stephanie Simpson) Underwood of Harrodsburg, Melissa (Owen) Hodge of Waynesburg, Terry (Rosemary) Underwood of Danville, Brad (Stephanie Nichols) Underwood of Lebanon, Michael (Bianca) Underwood of Louisville; a sister, Brenda Lewis of Harrodsburg; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lige Underwood and a daughter-in-law, Nina Underwood.

Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011 at Fox Funeral Home with Rev. James Kelly officiating. Burial was at Camp Nelson Cemetery with military rites by the Caswell Saufley Post #18 of the American Legion.

Pallbearers were: Owen Hodge, Billy Love, Davey and Jonathon Underwood, Brian Cloyd and Todd Stevens.

Memorials preferred to family for funeral expenses.

Fox Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

MARY YOUNG

Mary Rosetta Young, passed on September 24, 2011 at St. Joseph East in Lexington.

She was born May 25, 1926 to Mary Downs and Aloysious O’Daniel.

Mary was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic church. She retired from Eaton’s in Harrodsburg.

She is survived by: her husband of 66 years, George Young, Danville; one daughter, Agnes (Mack) Stallard, Louisville; two sons, James Young, Danville, KY and Donald Young, Harrodsburg; 10 grandsons and three great-grandsons; two sisters, Rita Ennis, Arlington, TX and Agnes Cowherd, Cincinnati, OH; one brother, Marcus O’Daniel, Arlington, TX; a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as one brother Charles O’Daniel and two sons, George Albert Young and Charles William Young.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, September 27, at the St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Danville.

Smith-Jackson Funeral Home in Danville was in charge of arrangements.

RICKY LYNN BROWN

Ricky Lynn Brown, 57, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011 at the Frankfort Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 19, 1953 in Nelson County, he was the son of Margie Wilson Brown of Lawrenceburg and the late Rufus Brown. He was a member of the Van Buren Baptist Church and attended the Carpenter’s Christian Church in Mercer County. He was a 1972 graduate of Western High School in Anderson County and a forklift operator for Monoplast in Frankfort.

He is survived by his wife, Debra Jean Barnes Brown; a son, Johnny (LaNeen) Brown of Salvisa; a sister, Joyce (Kenneth) Sutherland of Lawrenceburg; two brothers, Donnie (Carol) Brown of Georgetown and Roger (Dorothy) Brown of Anderson County and one grandchild.

Service were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25 at Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home with Bro. Greg Warren officiating. Burial was in Highview Cemetery in Chaplin.

Pallbearers were Jim Mattingly, Jimmy Greer, Keith Barnett, Tracy Barnes, Lewis Barnes, Keith Miller, and Arvin Wayne Short.

CHARLES CAUDILL

Charles Kenneth Caudill, 81, husband of Connie Watson Caudill, died Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Jan. 14, 1930 in Salyersville, he was the son of the late Charles H. and Gertrude May Caudill. He was a member of the Herrington Lake Conservation League and the Herrington Lake Yacht Club.

Survivors include four sons; Charles (Joann) Caudill, Chris (Lynn) Sheets, Clayton Caudill and Cliffton (Lesley) Caudill; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial for Caudill be will be held Sunday, Oct. 9 at 12 p.m. at the Caudill’s boat dock on Lake Herrington. Kerr Brothers Funeral Home in Lexington is in charge of arrangements.

HALDON GOODLETT

Haldon Goodlett, 80, of Harrodsburg, husband of Betty Ross Goodlett, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2011 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital Extended Care Unit.

Born Feb. 26, 1931 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late Herbert and Ethel Releford Goodlett. He was a retired carpenter and a member of the Harrodsburg Church of Christ.

Survivors other than his wife include: one son, Connie Dale Goodlett of Harrodsburg; two daughters, Elaine (Phil) Rutter of Nicholasville and Angela Rose Goodlett of Lexington and one brother, Roger (Cathy) Goodlett of Burgin; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert Elwood Goodlett and Lowell Thomas Goodlett and one sister, Ruby Bernice Roller.

Services were conducted Monday, Oct. 3 at Sims Funeral Services by James Hahn and Keith Greer. Burial was in the Springhill Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Landon Rutter, Thomas Sanders Jr., Clayton Francis, Tommy Wray, Ron Leasure and Billy C. Releford. Honorary pallbearers were: Buddy Steele, James Norton, Bruce Parrott, Leroy Releford, Kenny Stephens and Harold Mullins.

Memorials are suggested to the James B. Haggin Memorial Extended Care Unit, the National Association of Mental Illness and the American Heart Association.
