Teen Is Killed When Car Hits Train

A 19-year-old Mercer County teen was killed Saturday when her vehicle was stuck by a train at the Norfolk Southern Railroad crossing on Bohon Road.

Mercer County Deputy Coroner Chuck Bugg said Sophia D. Ammons of Fallis run Road was driving across the tracks at approximately 9:15 Saturday morning when the accident occurred.

Investigators say the sun likely impaired Ammons’ ability to see the signal lights at the crossing and the lights o the train. She was ejected from her vehicle by the impact and died almost instantly, Bugg states.

Bugg went back to the scene Monday morning to photograph the area and believes the bright sun at that time of day could have played a factor in the accident.

The official cause of Ammons’ death was blunt force trauma to the back o the head. An autopsy will not be performed, but Bugg said officials are awaiting the results of a toxicology screening. However, he said investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash, and foul play is not suspected.

Bugg said the track speed near the accident scene is 45 MPH, but he said it’s possible the train was not at full track speed when it stuck Ammons’ vehicle. He said he was told the engineer did not have time to stop the train and sounded the train’s whistle to warn of its approach.

Robin Chapin, a spokesman for Norfolk Southern Railroad, said railroad crossing signals are tested on a regular basis, and maintenance work is done when needed. Chapman said Norfolk Southern does not typically release statements to the media in relation to automobile accidents involving trains.

Ammons was the daughter of Pal and Phillita Jill Ammons. She is also survived by two sisters, Sarah Ammons and Mary Marie Rhorer.

Services for Ammons will be at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31 at the Worldtown Church of God in Boyle County.
