CHRISTOPHER PHILLIPS

Christopher L. Phillips, 37, of Lexington, husband of Patty Maupin Phillips, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, at the Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Born Feb. 1, 1974 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of Charles Hayden Phillips and Trudy Reed (John) Cavins.

Survivors in addition to his parents and wife include two daughters, Josalyn Phillips of Lexington and Paige Phillips of Indianapolis, Ind. and a half brother, John Cavins.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jacob Phillips and a brother, Charles Kevin Phillips.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 6 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Kenny Queener officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Robert Phillips, John Phillips, Cameron Phillips, John Cavins, Varney Reed, Tanner Reed and Derrick Chapman.

BOBBY SADLER

Bobby Sadler, 60, widower of Debbie Sanders Sadler, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 23, 1951 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late John Elmore and Gladys Moore Sadler. He was a retired bricklayer.

He is survived by three sons, Jason (Pennie) Sadler, Tony Sadler and Steven (Cindy Matthews) Sadler, all of Harrodsburg one daughter, Dawn (Jerry) Byrd of Harrodsburg; two brothers, Johnnie (Mary Evelyn) Sadler of Lawrenceburg and Jimbo (Diane) Sadler of Harrodsburg; one sister, Linda Stratton of Harrodsburg, seven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and James (Heather) Baker whom he raised.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Juanita Satterly.

The funeral was conducted Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Lynn Releford officiating.

TOMMY WATTS

Thomas “Tommy” Watts, 65, of Harrodsburg, husband of Lois (Lance) Watts, died Friday, Nov. 4, 2011 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born March 11, 1946 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late John Willis and Mary Frances Curtsinger Watts. He was retired from IBM and was formerly a stock manager of Kroger and Gateway, former board member of Central Kentucky Christian School, board member of the Faith Seekers Building Bridges and a member and deacon of the Harrodsburg Community Church.

Survivors other than his wife include three daughters, Kim Royalty of Garrard County, Kelly (Damian) Laymon of Harrodsburg and Rebekah Watts (Matthew Medley) of Harrodsburg; one brother, John Willis Watts, Jr. of Lawrenceburg; two sisters, Edna Merriman of Harrodsburg and Barbara Robinson of Lawrenceburg; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Edward Watts.

Services with military honors were conducted Tuesday, Nov. 8 at Harrodsburg Community Church with Senior Pastor Terry Morrison, George Smith and Roc Moore officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were: Dr. Bacon Moore, Larry Kyle, Damian Laymon, Nick and Zack Laymon, Matthew Medley and Ricky Baker.

Memorials are suggested to The Gideon’s International.

Sims Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.

BARBARA BROWN

Barbara L. Brown, 72, of Burgin, widow of Franklin D. Brown died Monday, Nov. 14, 2011 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born June 19, 1939 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Grant and Viola Sharp Landers. She was a retired employee of Mercer Plumbing and a member of the Shawnee Run Baptist Church. She enjoyed fishing, camping and spending time with her granddaughter.

She is survived by a son, Gary (Teresa) Brown of Burgin; a daughter, Carol (Mike) Hough of Harrodsburg, two brothers, Charles Thomas Landers of Simpsonville and Lucian Landers of Tenn.; a granddaughter Amber Nicole Hough; a step grandson, Deven Mason of Burgin and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, James Landers and three sisters, Wanda Bugg, Norma Sue McMurray and Dixie Logue.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. John Contini officiating. Burial will be in the Burgin Memorial Gardens with nephews serving as pallbearers.

Visitation 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.

ARTHUR EVANS JR.

Arthur Cleveland Evans Jr. passed away Nov. 9, 2011, in Eugene, OR.

He was born April 27, 1924, in Burgin.

Known affectionately as “Papa Jack” to his five children, nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, grew up in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky and was the oldest of seven children. He joined the U.S. Navy during World War II after graduating from high school, served throughout the war as a sonar specialist, and later served in the U.S. Coast Guard.

He married Anne Humble in Danville on June 16, 1947. Together, they raised five children while living in Kentucky and southern Indiana: Cathy Evans, of John’s Island, SC; Joe Evans of Springfield, OR; Alice Evans of Eugene, OR; John Evans of Mansfield, OH; and Dan Evans of Wichita, KS. Papa Jack’s wife, and all five of their children helped care for him at the end of his life, along with his son-in-law, Jon Heritage.

Papa Jack was a fisherman, a lover of poetry, and a gardener who enjoyed landscaping their rural properties. He worked as a laboratory technician for DuPont de Nemours in Louisville for 31 years, retiring in 1980 to move with his wife and two youngest children to the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. He and Anne bought the Timberline Motel in Eureka Springs, AR, where they welcomed guests and family for 25 years. In 2005, he and Anne finally retired together. They moved to the Eugene area to be near children and grandchildren, and in their retirement enjoyed exploring the trails near their home, playing bingo, and challenging each other in daily Scrabble matches.

Papa Jack is also survived by: four of his siblings, Betty Edwards, Jane Farley, Tom Evans of Danville and Jim Evans of Fairfax Station, VA.

The family plans a private memorial service to scatter Papa Jack’s ashes.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to Sacred Heart Hospice of Lane County, OR.

HAROLD FOWLER

Harold Bing Fowler, 90, of Harrodsburg, widower of Kathleen Morris Fowler, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born Dec. 21, 1920 in Burgin, he was the son of the late Richard C. and Myrtle Moors Fowler. He served during World War II in the Navy and was a retired IBM employee.

Survivors include one brother, Garnet Fowler of Harrodsburg.

He is preceded in death by a brother, Earl Fowler and a sister, Laverne Fowler.

Grave side services were Tuesday, Nov. 15 at the Willisburg Cemetery with military honors. Ransdell Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Mercer Co. Historical Society or Mercer Co. Humane Society.

RICHARD HYLEN

Richard W. Hylen, 83, widower of Ruth Tillman, of Painted Post, NY, died Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY.

Born Aug. 22, 1928 in Brockton, Mass., he was the son of Walter O. and Agnes Swenson Hylen. He was an Eagle Scout who served in the U.S. Army during Post World War II Japan and retired from Corning Incorporated, Technical Products Division in 1987.

He is survived by a daughter, Beth Hylen (Brad Turner) of Corning, NY; son, Pete Hylen of Lexington; granddaughter, Kate Hylen of Lexington; brother-in-law Harry Emmons of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and sister-in-law, Marian (Gilmore) MacNeill of Buchanan, Mich.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Hylen and a sister, Janet Emmons.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 19, at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Painted Post in New York with Pastor Glenn Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Painted Post, NY. Arrangements are with Phillips Funeral Home, Corning, NY.

Memorials may be made to the Janice and Ruth Hylen Memorial Fund, c/o First Presbyterian Church, 201 N. Hamilton Street, Painted Post, NY 14870.

CARLOS JOHNSON

Carlos Wayne Johnson, 54, of Harrodsburg died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011 at his residence.

Born December 16, 1956 in Lancaster, he was the son of Corena LaRose Kersey Collins and the late Junior Johnson. He was a United States Army Veteran and enjoyed music and spending time with family and friends.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his step-father, William W. Collins, a sister, Teresa Baker of Lexington, two uncles, two aunts and several cousins.

Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 16, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Lewis Walter officiating.

Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery with Willie Collins, Billy Collins, Shane Murphy, L. J. Sparks, Tony Sparks and Alex Macias serving as pallbearers.

MARY LAWRENCE

Mary Shirley Lawrence, 80 of Fall Lick Road in Lancaster, passed away Friday, November 11 at Saint Joseph Hospital in Berea.

She was born January 3, 1931 in Mercer County to the late Thomas Haven and Gertrude Sims Shirley.

She was a banker, member of the Lancaster Baptist Church, and enjoyed the outdoors.

Survivors include her children; Mark Lawrence and his wife Jessica of Garrard County, Mary Gaffney and her husband Robert of Lancaster, Melissa Frundle and her husband Rob of Montour, Iowa, four grandchildren; Jason Gaffney, Ryan Lawrence, Ashley Doolin, Billy Doolin, and five great grandchildren; Grace Gaffney, Luke Gaffney, Choloe Baker, Carley Baker, and Haileigh Lawrence.

Services will be were conducted Tuesday, November 15 at the Ramsey Funeral Home with Bro. Stephen Brogli officiating and burial followed in Lancaster Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jason Gaffney, Ryan Lawrence, Billy Doolin, McKinley Dailey, Billy C. Doolin, and Bruce Lawrence.

Honorary pallbearers were Ashley Doolin, Lilian Bracket, her Sunday School Class, and her co workers at First Southern National Bank.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Oneida Baptist Institute or The Alzheimer's Association. Ramsey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

FRANK MAYO

Mr. Frank Finley "Sonny" Mayo, 70, of Lebanon, passed away Sunday, November 13, 2011 at Spring View Hospital.

He was born on March 15, 1941 in Marion County.

Mr. Mayo was a retired Century 21 Real Estate Agent, and a member of Stewart's Creek Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Gobel and Gladys Bennett Mayo; former wife, Jenny Louise Mayo Deep; daughter, Jane Louise Deep; sister, Catherine Mayo.

Survivors include: one daughter, Jennifer Crowe, of Bloomfield; three sons, Christopher Mayo, Timothy Mayo, and Dennis Mayo, all of Lebanon; four brothers, Bobby Mayo, of Anchorage, KY, G .L. Mayo, of Lebanon, Marshall Mayo, of Bowling Green, and Leon Mayo, of Harrodsburg; seven grandchildren, Alex, Jacob, Kennedy, Trace and Zachary Mayo, Nicole Thompson, Natalie Calvert;; three great-grandchildren, Lance and Evan Thompson, and Olivia Calvert.

Funeral Services for Mr. Mayo will be held on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Bosley Funeral Home in Lebanon, officiated by Rev. Dan Durham.

NANCY MCANINCH

Nancy Hensley McAninch, 85, of the Poplarville community of Pulaski County, departed this life on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at her residence.

She was born on January 30, 1926 in Bell County, to the late Crit and Emma Peck Hoskins.

Mrs. McAninch was a member of Green River Pentecostal Church of God. She was a homemaker. Mrs. McAninch was well-known for her hand sewn quilts. She enjoyed many other crafts, including bead works.

She is survived by; her husband, Carnell McAninch, whom she married on November 1, 1971 in Harrodsburg; one son, George (Sheila) Hensley of Burgin; one daughter, Alice (Phil) Clark of Danville; three step-daughters; 12 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; two sisters, Hazel Miller of Augusta, GA and Roberta Patterson of Highland, MI.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by four sons, Bennie, Wayne, Phil and Mark Hensley and a daughter, Nancy Sue Hensley.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 10, 2011 after 12 noon at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home, 1046 West Highway 80, Somerset, KY with the funeral service to follow at 2 p.m.

Funeral services were held Thursday, November 10, at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home in Somerset. Brother Steve Sutton officiated. Burial was in Double Springs Cemetery in Waynesburg.

Pallbearers were Shane Hensley, Danny Clark, Wayne Hensley, Jr., Jason Hensley, Anthony Hensley, Kinley Sims, Wendell Sims and Lige Stearns.

Honorary pallbearers were the granddaughters.

The family request expressions of sympathy be made to the Mount Zion Baptist Church, c/o Linda Hensley, 624 Ben Baker Road, Somerset, KY 42501 and/or Hospice of Lake Cumberland (Pulaski Co.), 100 Parkway Drive, Somerset, KY 42503.
