Vera Opal Burns Bruner, known to many as Granny Ope, 97, died Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at the Brownsboro Hills Nursing Home in Louisville. She was the second of three children born to the late William Ira and Ona Sanders Burns in Mercer County on July 9, 1908. She was a life long member of the Bohon Church of Christ and attended Eastern Kentucky Teacher's College and Kentucky Wesleyan College when it was located in Winchester. She briefly taught school in her youth. Later in life, she worked as a copy holder for a Braille proof reader and was employed for many years at the White Cottage Restaurant in Harrodsburg.

Opal was remarkable in many ways which set her apart and made her special. Although tiny in stature, she was feisty and possessed enough resolve and resiliency to take on whatever hardships came her way. She was her own person and did not shy away from speaking her mind and calling the shots. She was hard working with stamina to outlast most. She had a ready smile and a giving heart. She looked for the good in people but understood transgressions. She was compassionate and caring, bright and resourceful, and strong, she said, because she had to be. Because of these traits and countless others, she touched all she knew and made a difference in many lives. She will forever be missed.
