Lt. Col Harvey James Harris, Retired USAF, 90 years old, went home to the Lord on January 10, 2010 in Bogalusa, LA. Col. Harris was born July 23, 1919 in Harrodsburg, KY and was preceded in death by his parents William and Allie Mae Harris and his wife of 45 years, Laurielea who passed in 1992. He was the 10th of 11 children who preceded him in death.

He is survived by his daughter, Patricia L. Harris, Dayton, OH, son Alan, Naples, FL., granddaughter Dana(John) Crapel, Bogalusa, LA., great-grandchildren Laurielea and Robert Kimbel, Bogalusa, LA. and sister-in-law Elizabeth Harris, Danville, KY

Col. Harris graduated from Harrodsburg High School in 1936 and the University of Maryland in 1954. He enlisted in the US Army-Air Corps in 1940 and in 1942 was commissioned a 2nd LT. after graduating from OCS. In his 24 year military career in served at many bases including Nebraska, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, Washington, the Pentagon, Germany, Ohio and New Mexico. In WWII he served in the China-Burma-India theater. After his retirement from the Air Force, he worked for 15 years as a Trust Officer at Winters National Bank in Dayton, OH. He had resided in Dayton and Huber Heights, OH for many years before moving to Metairie and Bogalusa, LA after his retirement from the bank.

Funeral services and mass will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, Jan., 15, 2010 at St. Andrews Catholic Church, Harrodsburg, KY with Fr. Danny Schwendeman officiating Public viewing will be from 11:00 am to 1:00pm, followed by mass of Christian burial at 1:00pm. Burial with military honors will be at Spring Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg.

Leroy Dean, 78, of Harrodsburg, died Thursday, December 31, 2009 at the V.A. Medical Center in Lexington. Born June 30, 1931 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Robert and Myrtle Blacketer Dean. A U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War, he was also a farmer, a former business owner of Dean’s General Store in Mackville, and retired from Sylvania Glass. He was a member of the Ellers Memorial Baptist Church. Leroy enjoyed gardening, volunteering at Christian Life Center, spending time with his family and his “grand-dog” Prissy.

Survivors include his wife of Fifty Three Years, Jeannie Gabhart Dean, one daughter Shanda Dean and one son Barry Dean all of Harrodsburg. Two brothers:Snider Dean of Harrodsburg, and Bill (Betty) Dean of Springfield, and one sister Blondie Dean of Louisville. Five grandchildren: Jaime (Jamie) Stumph, Dylan Boynton, Slade (Amber) Smith, Nicholas Dean, and Brittany Dean. Three great grandchildren: Landon Smith, Emily Smith, Alyssa Grimes, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by three brothers: Walton Dean, J.R. Dean, and Donald Dean.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 4, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Dr. Kenneth Whitehouse and Bro. Kenneth Smith officiating. Burial will be in Ever Green Cemetery in Willisburg with Joe Carrier, Bruce Sims, Gary Devine, Randy Gabhart, Doug Gabhart, and Gary Stumph serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Walter Jackson, James Grimes, Hobert Grimes, Tony Pinkston, Jessie Thomas, and Sonny Miller.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Sunday and after 7:00 a.m. Monday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to WLJC Television Ministry, P.O. Box Y, Beattyville, KY 41311.

Michael Wayne Darland, 38, of Harrodsburg, died Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born February 6, 1971 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of Martha Raley Slaven of Harrodsburg. He was a former employee of Kroger, a member of the Ellers Memorial Baptist Church, enjoyed fishing, model cars, talking on his CB Radio, and watching wrestling.

Besides his parents, Michael is survived by three sisters: Carrie (Carl) Carpenter of Harrodsburg, Suzanne (Tommy) Elliott of Metcalfe, IL., and Dawn (Ronnie) Edgbert of Harrodsburg. A special friend Jenny Mershon of Harrodsburg, several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his step-father Leo Slaven.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Mark King and Bro. Paul Readnour officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery with Jim Noel, Carl Carpenter, Bradley Graham, Curtis Graham, Scottie Raley, Wayne Savage, Tommy Elliott, and Ronnie Egbert serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held 11:00 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Shirley Jean Crews, 71, widow of Hobert Crews died Monday, December 28, 2009 at her residence. Born August 22, 1938 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late James Edward and Janie Drury Pinkston. Shirley was a homemaker and enjoyed shopping, festivals, flea markets and concerts.

She is survived by two brothers: John (Debbie) Pinkston of Burgin and J.L. (Sarah) Pinkston of Danville. Shirley is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother: Ralph Pinkston.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 31, 2009 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Geoff Barrett officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery with Scott Wright, Chad Pinkston and Walter Gribbins serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday, December 31, 2009 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Phyllis Ann Moore, 58, wife of Cash Ray Moore of Harrodsburg died Thursday, December 17, 2009 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Born June 11, 1951 in Madison County she was the daughter of the late Gilbert Alford and Ruth Rector Lamb. She was a C.N.A. and enjoyed reading and cross word puzzles.

Survivors in addition to her husband are two sons: Cash Ray Moore, II and Cassidy Moore both of Harrodsburg, one step-son: Allen Moore of Lancaster, one brother: Joe Alford of Harrodsburg, two sisters: Rita Phillips of Lexington and Teresa Angel of West Memphis, ARK. and several nieces and nephews.

Phyllis was preceded in death by one brother James Alford.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 P.M. Monday, December 21, 2009 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. Lewis Walters officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday, December 21, 2009 from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Edward N. Harris, 64, of Stanford, died Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at the Golden Living Center in Stanford. Born July 10, 1945 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Ernest Harris. He was a retired farm worker, a Baptist, and enjoyed fishing and watching the Andy Griffieth Show.

Survivors include five brothers Michael (Rita) Harris of Bradfordsville, Timothy Harris of Lexington, William Harris of Harrodsburg, David Lunsford of Harrodsburg, and Kenneth Harris of Harrodsburg. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Monday, December 21, 2009 at the Shawnee Run Baptist Church Cemetery with Bro. Lewis Walters officiating. Carl Mull, Bobby Mull, and Bobby Angel will serve as pallbearers.

No visitation will be held.

Coleman, Helen VanArsdale

Helen VanArsdale Coleman, 82, died Monday, December 14,2009, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. Born June 6, 1927, in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Clelland and Gladys Deatheridge VanArsdale Coleman.

A graduate of Harrodsburg High School and the University of Kentucky, she was a retired social worker. Helen supervised the adoption of children in Central Kentucky for the Department of Human Resources and was instrumental in the adoption of children into many local families. She was a lifelong member of the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church, a former member of the Danville Country Club, a member of Spindletop Hall and was a long-time resident of the Beach and Tennis Club of Bonita Springs, Florida.

Helen was a superb bridge player, and developed a host of friends across Kentucky and Florida at the game table. Another interest throughout her life was tennis, which she enjoyed during her retirement at Bonita Springs Beach and Tennis Club .

Survivors include her brother T.C. (Betty) Coleman IV and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Gladys Ebert, Sara Edwards, and Betty Booth Cole.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 17, 2009 at the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home and after 10:00 A.M. Thursday at the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Barnesville Street Community Church, 215 Barnesville Street, Thomaston, GA 30286, c/o pastor Gladys Haralu. Pastor Haralu is Helen’s niece.

Kirkland, Kenneth

Kenneth Burl Kirkland, 75, of Harrodsburg, died Thursday, December 10, 2009 at his residence. Born March 27, 1934 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Clarence and Josie Lou Devine Kirkland. He was a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church where he served on the Harrodsburg Baptist Foundation. He retired after having worked twenty two years at IBM; was a long-time farmer and business partner of David Baker and Jim McGlone.

Survivors include his wife of fifty five years Audrey Cosby Kirkland of Harrodsburg, one son Kenneth Michael Kirkland, one brother Donald Kirkland, one sister Geneva Jenkins, two grandsons Chris and Ryan Kirkland, and one great granddaughter Kamri Kirkland. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his son Randall Kirkland and one brother Byford Kirkland.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 14, 2009 at the Harrodsburg Baptist Church with Rev. Ernest Martin and Dr. Robert DeFoor officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service at the Harrodsburg Baptist Church. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Heritage Hospice, P.O. Box 1213, Danville, KY 40422.

Marshall Lee Cochran, 56, husband of Teresa Sue Russell Cochran, died Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Born April 5, 1953 in Boyle County, he was the son of the late Tom and Myrtle Beavers Cochran. He was an employee for the City of Harrodsburg Street Department for the past seventeen years and was a member of the Southern Avenue Baptist Church. Marshall enjoyed restoring and showing cars, and spending time with his grandsons and his cats.

Besides his wife, Marshall is survived by two daughters: Penny (Joe) Curtsinger of Harrodsburg and Jenny (Max Reeser) Cochran also of Harrodsburg. One sister Brenda Cochran of Danville, his mother-in-law Helen Russell of Harrodsburg, and two grandsons Cody and Taylor Curtsinger also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 13, 2009 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Derek Baker officiating. Burial will be in Patterson Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday and after 11:00 a.m. Sunday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Riley “Junior” Hoover, 78, of Harrodsburg, died Friday, December 4, 2009 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. Born July 25, 1931 in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Riley and Ernie Kennedy Hoover. He was a retired mechanic and farmer; he was a Mason and a member of the Edwards Chapel Methodist Church. He enjoyed fishing, collecting pocket knives, squirrel and rabbit hunting, playing bingo, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include two daughters: Janet (Billy) Peel of Perryville and Donna (Ted) Kirkpatrick of Burgin. Three sons: Ronnie Hoover of Harrodsburg, Jeff (Donna) Hoover of Lexington, and Marty (Debbie) Hoover of Nicholasville. Thirteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 7, 2009 at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Wayne County with Bro. Ralph Neal officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with Kevin Peel, Richard Kirkpatrick, Chris Hoover, Dustin Hoover, and Jackie Denney serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
