Mrs. Virginia P. Graves, 90, of Harrodsburg, widow of Beryl Y. Graves died Thursday, September 10, 2009 at Pine Meadows Health Care in Lexington. Virginia was born April 4, 1919 in Mercer County to the late Lewis C. and Fannie Noel Phillips. Mrs. Graves was employed for 18 years at Hall-Mack, a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church, Willing Workers Sunday school class, Saints Alive Choir and a former volunteer at the Christian Life Center.

Virginia is survived by three sons: George A. Graves of Bala Cynwyd, PA., John M. Graves of Westchester, Ohio and William (Bill) Graves of Lexington, three sisters: Frances Miller of Shelbyville, KY, Christine Tyson of Dwight, KS and Betty Caswell of Harrodsburg. Eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Two brothers Lewis Phillips, Jr. and Andrew Phillips, two sisters: Adeline Gash and Dora Helen Shank preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A. M., Monday, September 14, 2009 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home, conducted by Dr. Robert Defoor and Eddie Russell. Interment will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery with her grandchildren serving as pallbearers.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of a donation to the Mercer County Senior Citizens, 1475 Louisville Road, Harrodsburg, KY 40330

William Garrett Rector, 66, of Lexington, died Sunday, September 06, 2009 at the Hospice Care Center in Lexington. Born January 2, 1943 in Garrard County, he was the son of the late Cecil Rector and Laura Hensley Rector Stinnett. He was a retired self-employed handy-man; he enjoyed fishing and playing cards.

Survivors include two daughters: Carolyn Rector and Cathy Rector (Ron) Batten both of Lexington; one son Garrett (Dawn) Rector of Lexington. Three grandchildren: Destiny Batten, Joshua and Jared Rector all of Lexington. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by two brothers; Johnnie and Eugene Rector and three sisters: Ruth Lamb, Bernice Wiley, and Sue Beasley.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Allen Hensley officiating.

Visitation will be after 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Helen Ann Bradley 70 of Harrodsburg, died Sunday September 6, 2009 at Harrodsburg Health Care. She was born in Mercer County October 8, 1938 to the late Sam and Ina Watts Bradley. Helen graduated from Mercer County High School and Danville School of Nursing. She was former LPN at James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital and a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church. She enjoyed cooking and collecting recipe books.

Survivors include two brothers: Lloyd Bradley of Harrodsburg and Arthur Bradley of Danville, one sister Margie Wynn of Portsmouth, Ohio, one aunt Eva Foster of Bushnell, Florida, one niece, two great nieces and six cousins.

Services will be conducted Wednesday September 9 at 12:00 noon at Spring Hill Cemetery by John David Lane.

David Lay, 57, husband of Barbara Cutter Lay, died Thursday, September 3, 2009 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. Born August 13, 1952 in Boyle County, he was the son of the late Lilburn G. and Lillie Curtis York Lay. He was a member of the Shakertown Baptist Church, was a Mechanic at Wausau Paper in Harrodsburg and formerly worked in Maintenance at Cudahy and Dairymen. He enjoyed collecting and working on Classic Cars and Hotrods, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors besides his wife include two daughters: Michell (Ronnie) Guy of Springfield and Sherrie (Charlie) Reynolds of Sadieville. One son Keith (Ashley) Lay of Burgin, three sisters: Doris (Howard) West of Burgin, Pearl (Jimmy) Roberts of Junction City, and Gladys Waterstrat of Danville, Illinois. Three brothers: Cecil (Hazel) Lay of Danville, John (Louada) Leigh of Danville, Illinois, and Peevine (Joann) Sims of Florida. Four grandchildren: Courtney Leigh Guy, and Alex, Lindsey, and Tyler Reynolds. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Estill and Ralph Leigh and one sister Stella Sims.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 6, 2009 at the Shakertown Baptist Church with Bro. Joe Smith officiating. Burial will be in Burgin Memorial Gardens with David Brown, Frankie Phillips, Jackie Leece, Mike Turner, Jeff Turner, and Ronnie Thornton serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Grandhildren and members of the Maintenance Crew at Wausau Paper.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Saturday, from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Sunday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home and after 1:00 p.m. Sunday at the Shakertown Baptist Church. Mrs. Nina Driskell Blanton, 77, wife of Beachel “Jack” Blanton of Frankfort, died Saturday, August 29, 2009 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born January 29, 1932 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late William Bascom and Virginia Durr Driskell. She was a retired C.N.A. for Franklin County Home Health, attended Mt. Hebron Church, and enjoyed reading, visiting with friends and family, and going to auctions.

Besides her husband, survivors include four daughters: Edith Watts, Alice (B.J.) Baker, Ruby Payton and Rita (Roy) Holt all of Harrodsburg. Three sons: Donnie (Sue) Watts of Frankfort, Robbie Watts of Harrodsburg, and Carl (Lisha) Watts of Harrodsburg. Twelve grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Harold Best officiating. Private Burial will be held in Monterey Cemetery in Owen County with Steve Watts, Donnie S. Watts, Harold Driskell, Bobby Driskell, Roger Driskell, and Calvin Votaw serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Votaw, Larry Votaw, Bruce Votaw, Harry Driskell, Sonny Driskell, Earl Votaw, Michael Driskell, Terry Driskell, Sherwood Driskell, and Holly Driskell.

Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 1, 2009 and after 7:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

America Combs “Ricky,” Newett, 88, peacefully joined her heavenly father on Saturday August 22, 2009. Ricky was born in Breathitt County, Kentucky, to a large family on May 12, 1921 to the late Asbury and Delilah Combs. She graduated from Lees Junior College in Jackson, Kentucky. From there she went to live with her sister Millie in Lexington, Kentucky during World War II where she met her husband to be, Bob Newett, who was from Park Ridge, Illinois, and stationed in Lexington. After a three week courtship, they married and Ricky moved to Park Ridge, to live with Bob’s family during the war while Bob served in the Philippines. After two children, Ricky became a teacher and received her master’s degree from Spalding University. She played piano by ear and was a wonderful singer.

Ricky’s husband Bob preceded her to heaven. They were very active in square dancing after retirement and were Mr. and Mrs. President of the Beulah Twirlers. After Bob’s death, Ricky moved with her son Dan to Lake Herrington near Harrodsburg, Kentucky, where they lived for many years. Ricky is survived by her son Dan; her daughter Norma Hogan (Michael); her sister Cory Fugate of Dayton, OH.; granddaughters Julie Fithian and Dolly Newett (Gary); and great grandchildren Avery Fithian, Kyle Fithian, Jackson Fithian, Kendall Fithian, and Jordan Newett. She loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren very much.

Visitation will be 4-8 pm Tuesday at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home, 304 E. Lexington Street, in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, on Tuesday, August 25. There will be a memorial service at St. John’s United Methodist Church on US 42 in Prospect, Kentucky at 11:00 on Wednesday, August 26. Burial will be private in Cave Hill Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice.

Neal Jr., Donald

Donald Neal, Jr., 41, husband of Lisa Michelle Patterson Neal, died Monday, August 17, 2009. Born September 18, 1967 in Mercer County, he was the son of Brenda Phillips Neal of Harrodsburg and the late Donald Neal, Sr. Donald worked with cattle and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Besides his wife and mother, Donald is survived by one son: Allen (Sylvia) Neal of Harrodsburg, three daughters: Angelia, Ashten and Lea Neal all of Harrodsburg, one sister: Donna Joyce Robinson of Versailles and one half brother: Christopher Wayne Neal of Versailles. Donald is also survived by his paternal grandparents: James and Mary Neal of Salvisa and his maternal grandmother: Rhoda Beatrice Hardin of Harrodsburg, also surviving are three nieces, two nephews and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Joe Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery with Billy Price, Allen Neal, John Phillips, Jr., Jerry Phillips, Leon Phillips, Jr. and Mike Huff serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Baker, Dorothy Viola

Dorothy Viola Watts Baker, 80, of Harrodsburg, died Monday, August 10, 2009 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. Born December 9, 1928 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Thomas and Stella Lou Maddox Watts, Sr. She was a former waitress at Redwood Restaurant having worked for twenty years. She was also a member of the Grace Baptist Church and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons Cleo W. and his wife Tsvetanka Baker, Jr. and Harold D. and his wife Cookie Baker both of Harrodsburg. Two daughters: Carole and her husband Gary Griffieth and Vonny and her husband Billy Humphrey both of Mercer County. Two brothers: Raymond Watts, Jr. of Harrodsburg and Kenneth Dale Watts of Georgetown. Three sisters: Ruby Chambers, Mary Baker, and Beverly Griffin all of Harrodsburg. Ten Grandchildren: Sam Baker, Doug Baker, Michael Griffieth, Vicki Griffieth, Carla Bensinger, Jennifer Wilhite, Sarah Baker, Anna Stoyadinova, Nick Humphrey, and Lynsey Lane, ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by one son Michael Wayne Baker, one great grandson Lyndon Lane, her former husband of forty nine years Cleo W. "Click" Baker, Sr., four sisters: Thelma Stephens and Sue Margaret Watts, Juanita Byrd and Georgia Mae Weldon, and two brothers Ronnie Watts and Iva Watts.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, August 13, 2009 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home. Interment will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. Great Grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Wednesday and after 7:00 a.m. Thursday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Telissa Lynn Stewart, 41, wife of Terry W. Stewart, died Sunday, August 9, 2009 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Born October 8, 1967 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of Frances Puckett Stine of Burgin and the late Ernest Wayne Stine. She was a homemaker, a former employee of Danville Medical Billing and was a member of the Shakertown Baptist Church where she served as Children’s Teacher. Telissa enjoyed cross stitching.

Survivors besides her husband and mother include two daughters: Megan K. Sims and Renee Sims both of Burgin, five step-children, seven step-grandchildren, her Godchildren: Josh, Traci, Kasey, Isaiah, Ezra, and Suly Smith, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Joe Smith officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery with Mike Wilson, Terry Wilson, Chris Puckett, Jerry Puckett, Hugh Smith, and Brian Smith serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and after 7:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Mrs. Nina Cocanougher 96, of Burgin, widow of Robert M. Cocanougher, died Sunday August 2, 2009 in Danville at the home of a daughter. She was born June 30, 1913 in Boyle County to the late Robert (Bob) and Laura Carpenter Reynolds. She and her husband farmed and she enjoyed mowing her lawn in her 90’s. The oldest member of Shawnee Run Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters Doris (Leslie) Brown of Danville, Carol Mae (Thomas) Chatman of Lawrenceburg. Four sons Garnett (Leadine) Cocanougher of Nicholasville, Donald (Pat) Cocanougher, Marvin Leon (Evelyn) Cocanougher, Glenn (Bonnie) Cocanougher all of Harrodsburg. A daughter in law Carolla Cocanougher of Lexington. Several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren also survive.

One son Harold Gene Cocanougher, two brothers Addison & Lee Reynolds and one sister Vertie White preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 P.M., Wednesday August 5, 2009 at Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home by Bro. Lester Tirey. Grandsons will serve as active and honorary pallbearers. Interment will be in Hill Crest Cemetery in Perryville.

Visitation Tuesday 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. and 7:00 A.M. Wednesday until the hour of service.
