Interment: Spring Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg

Mrs. Lulie Hogue, 73, wife of fifty-one years to Jack Hogue of Burgin, died Saturday, July 31, 2010 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center. Born December 1, 1936 in Perry County, she was the daughter of the late William “Bud” and Della Browning Shepherd. She was retired from Mercer Dress and Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. A member of Shawnee Run Baptist Church, Mrs. Hogue also enjoyed raising flowers, gardening, and bird feeding.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Hogue is survived by two brothers: Howard (Juanita) Shepherd of Cornettsville, KY and Roscoe (Joe Anne) Shepherd of Slemp, KY.; five sisters: Myrtle Turner, Dorothy Ashley, and Sophia (Ralph) Turner all of Big Laurel, KY; Opal (Jim) Gray of Lafollette, TN, and Audrey Chesser of Bardstown. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by one brother Carl Shepherd and one niece Lana Hawkins.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Spivey officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery with James Thurman, William Turner, Joey Martingill, Mike Sheets, Ron Mudd, and Roy Beasley serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Turner, Jamie Gray, Harold Shepherd, Tony Shepherd, Devyn Martinvill, Mike Ashley, and Tyler Shepherd.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and after 7:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Alsip, Blanche N.

November 17, 1911 - July 28, 2010

Mrs. Blanche N. Alsip, 98, of Harrodsburg, widow of Forest Alsip died Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at her residence. Born November 17, 1911 in Washington County she was the daughter of the late Hansford and Iva Turner Newby. Mrs. Alsip was employed by the Kenton County Board of Education where she taught school and retired after 32 years of service. She was a graduate of the Cornishville High School and Eastern Kentucky University. She was a cheerleading sponsor for seven years, coached seventh and eighth grade basketball for one year, received a certificate of merit for teachers, a life membership to the PTA, sponsored the spelling bee in the Kenton County school system, a member of the Retired Teachers of Northern Kentucky and she was presented a “This Is Your Life” program in 1972. Mrs. Alsip was a member of the Bruner’s Chapel Baptist Church. She was a former teacher of the Fedelis Sunday School class for 17 years, taught senior citizen’s bible study class for five year, a former member of the Bethel Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for twenty years.

Mrs. Alsip is survived by nine nieces and nephews, one of which held a special place in her heart: Jim (Scottie) Newby, and several great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband she is preceded in death by her brother James H. Newby and three sisters: Mrs. Zelma Dean, Mrs. Alma Burkhead and Mrs. Mary Riley.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:30 P.M., Saturday, July 31, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. David Crowe and Mike Crain officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery with Brent Newby, Jerry Newby, Robert Prather, Lynn Crain, George Seng and Ronnie Patton serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Friday, July 30, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Huffman, Arthur C.
December 29, 1920 - July 26, 2010

Arthur C. Huffman, 89, of Harrodsburg died Monday, July 26, 2010 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center. Born December 29, 1920 in Cornishville, Arthur was the son of the late James R. and Lillie Mae Foster Huffman. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in W.W. II. He attended Centre College and the University of Kentucky and worked in the hotel industry in Washington, D.C.

Survivors include two brothers: Bruce Huffman of Harrodsburg and Harold Huffman of Lexington. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A private graveside service will be held, there will be no visitation.

Sheperson, Wallace Leslie

Wallace Leslie Sheperson, 89, of Harrodsburg, husband of Betty Hill Sheperson died Sunday, July 25, 2010 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born November 6, 1920 in Mercer County, Wallace was the son of the late James and Addie Owens Sheperson. He was a U.S. Army Veterna, a farmer, the owner of the B & S Grocery and a member of the Bohon Church of Christ.

Survivors besides his wife include: three step-children: Bill Hill of Harrodsburg, Betty Jo (Chris) Richmond of Maryland and Beverly (Dannie) Goodpaster of Harrodsburg; two sisters: Mollie Carey of Lexington and Isabell Cummins of Tennessee; six step-grandchildren and thirteen nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Sam and Robert Sheperson and two sisters: Lorain Burns and Sada Carey.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Julius Hoban and Bro. Al Gisler officiating. Burial with military Rites will be in Spring Hill Cemetery with Kelly Bugg, Gerald Sheperson, Bruce Carey, Jerry Gray, Jim Burns and Billy Wickersham serving as pallbearers and his nieces serving as honorary pallbearers.

Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and after 7:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Turpin, Rev. Edward Wayne "Buddy"

Rev. Edward Wayne “Buddy” Turpin, 59, husband of Lana Stratton Turpin, died Saturday, July 24, 2010 at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington. Born March 30, 1951 in Boyle County, he was the son of Gladys Lucille Preston Turpin of Harrodsburg and the late Edward Arvis Turpin. He was current pastor of the Perryville Church of God. He enjoyed playing softball, fishing, hunting, antiquing, spending time with his family and grandchildren, and preaching to his congregation at Perryville Church of God.

Besides his wife and mother, survivors include one son Joey Wayne Turpin of Harrodsburg; three daughters: Valerie (Paul) Stratton of Parksville, Chastity (David) McLemore of Harrodsburg, and Jenny Lu (Lee) Stratton of Mitchellsburg. Two brothers Gary Scott Turpin and Deron Reed Turpin both of Harrodsburg; two sisters: Brenda Kay Jones and Regina Darlene Turpin both of Harrodsburg. Seven grandchildren: Dustin Lee McLemore, Stormy Brook Stratton, Haley Nicole Stratton, Hunter Lee Stratton, Faith Christian Stratton, Charity Hope Stratton, and Marshall Lee Wayne Stratton. One great granddaughter Brianna “Breezy” Mazerk, and several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by one brother Jimmy Allen Turpin.

Funeral services will be conducted 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at the Perryville Church of God with Revs. Terry Orcutt, James Byrd, Larry Holbrook, Floying Thompson, and Dan Carr officiating. Burial will be in Parksville Cemetery with Mike Vandivier, Mike Stratton, Daryl Catlett, Bobby Catlett, Leonard Chumbley, Don Garland, and Lynn Moss serving as active pallbearers. The Men of Perryville Church of God will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Monday and after 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Perryville Church of God.

Scott, James Archie

March 16, 1916 - July 24, 2010

James Archie Scott departed this life Saturday, July 23, at the age of 94. Husband for 69 years to the late Nettie Kurtz Scott, he is survived by daughters Sandra Scott of Burgin and Pat Scott of Lancaster, as well as two granddaughters, Jana Scott (Steve) Fortner and Hayleigh Scott and one grandson, Adam Scott. In addition, he leaves behind two great grandsons, Ryan and James Fortner, cousin John (Sue) King, and 14 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Nettie; their son James A. Jr, his parents, James B. “Doc” Scott; sisters Glenys Crozier and Evelyn Singleton, and brother Jack.

Archie was born in Pike County, Kentucky. He attended Duke University, Morehead State University, and the University of Kentucky. For most of his life he was self-employed, owning a chain of shoe stores in Dallas, TX.

He was a faithful member of the Church of Christ serving as a deacon, teacher, and occasional preacher. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed by his family and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at the Mercer Church of Christ with Rick Leach officiating. Burial will be in the Blue Grass Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at the Mercer Church of Christ.

Sexton, Mary Rose
June 29, 1921 - July 23, 2010

Mary Rose Sexton, 89, of Harrodsburg died Friday, July 23, 2010 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born June 29, 1921 in Mercer County, Mary Rose was the daughter of the late George and Julia Jenkins Sexton. She was a homemaker and enjoyed dolls and stuffed animals.

Mary Rose is survived by several cousins.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 P.M., Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at the Spring Hill Cemetery with Bro. Lewis Walters officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Robinson, Homer

April 14, 1941 - July 21, 2010

Homer Robinson, 69, died Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at his residence. Born April 14, 1941 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Haskell Marion and Hattie Pearl Puckett Robinson. Homer was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church and was a retired mechanic having owned East Side Auto Service for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and U.K. Basketball.

Survivors include three sons: David (Shelly) Robinson of Danville, Christopher (Daniel Pogue) Robinson of Ohio, and Mark (Heather Hume) Robinson of Harrodsburg. One daughter Debby Combs of Harrodsburg, two sisters: Nellie Rose Holderman of Mercer County and Lillie Mae Birch of Athens, GA. Also surviving are Homer’s Fiancée Alexa Drury of Mercer County, five grandchildren, one great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by two brothers Roy Baxter Robinson and James Marion Robinson; and two sisters Opal Louise Giles and Bonnie Lois Trimble.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 24, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Harold Best officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery with Delaine Riley, E.J. Riley, Steve Long, Jeremy Bottoms, Ronnie Robinson, Mike Birch, Ralph Rogers, Tommy Goodlett, and Terrill Simpson serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Connie Robinson, Sac Hume, and James Carroll.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday and after 7:00 a.m. Saturday at Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Nancy Lutitia Benge Pinkston, 69, widow of Ralph M. Pinkston, died Monday, July 19, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. Born May 5, 1941 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Martin Jackson and Mary Elizabeth Grimes Benge. She was a homemaker and a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church. Nancy enjoyed collecting dolls and spending time with her great grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter Yuvonne (Dee) Wesley of Harrodsburg and four sons: Ronnie McElroy and Donnie McElroy of Danville, Andrew McElroy of Lincoln County, and Cecil McElroy of Hustonville. One special son-in-law Dee Wesley, one special grandson-in-law Jamie Benham, fifteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter and one great great granddaughter on the way.

She was preceded in death by her son James McElroy, one great grandson Levi Brummett, and her brother Louis Benge.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 22, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with David Terwillieer officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery with Jamie Brummett, Chad Pinkston, Chris Cox, Justin Durham, Ronnie McElroy, and Donnie McElroy. Honorary pallbearers will be Scott Wright, Jamie Benham, and Anthony Durham.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and after 7:00 a.m. Thursday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Heritage Hospice, P.O. Box 1213, Danville, KY 40423.

Marsha Montgomery, 61, of Harrodsburg died Monday, July 12, 2010 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born August 7, 1948 in Mercer County, Marsha was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Dennia Durr Norton. Marsha worked in retail sales as an employee of the Ben Franklin and Wal-Mart stores. She loved the movie “Gone With The Wind”, collecting dolls, music boxes and all of her family memories.

Marsha is survived by one son: Eric (Lisa) Montgomery of Lexington, one brother: Leslie Norton of Harrodsburg, two grandchildren: Todd Montgomery and Alyssa Montgomery both of Lexington, three aunts and two uncles.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, July 15, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Larry Sanders and Art Hembree officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery with George Cheatham, Joe Cheatham, Jack Robertson and Jeff Robertson serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.
