A.J. True, Jr., 81, of Harrodsburg, widower of Maggie Wheeler True died Sunday, July 11, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville. Born September 10, 1928, A.J. was the son of the late Arthur J. and Isabelle Harp True, Sr. Mr. True was a lifetime farmer who enjoyed volunteering in public safety endeavors, serving the City of Burgin both as a volunteer police officer and fireman. He later became a full-time fire fighter for the City of Harrodsburg and subsequently transferred to the Harrodsburg Police Department, where he was serving as Assistant Chief at the time of his retirement. After a “short retirement”, A.J. joined the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department, serving over a decade as a Deputy Sheriff and Court Bailiff. He was an avid sportsman and lifelong supporter of Kentucky Wildlife & Conservation. He served with the Kentucky National Guard and was a longtime member of the Shawnee Run Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son: A.J. (Carrie) True, III of Harrodsburg, two daughters: Trudy (Earl) Kleckner of Danville and Sandy (Gary) Thomas of Harrodsburg, one brother: Laurel (Poppie) (Alice) True of Shelbyville, six grandchildren: Stephanie Burus, Diana Bennett, Candace Thomas, Bret True, Joshua True, Earl Kleckner, II and Kennedy Burus. One nephew Julian Guthrie (Jennifer) True of Frankfort also survives.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Dr. Phil Yates officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery with Gary Thomas, Earl Kleckner, Sr., Ernie Kelty, Mike Burus, Joe Wright, Guthrie True and Donnie Webb serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office and all Law Enforcement Officers.

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 13, 2010 from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Contributions may take the form of donations to the American Cancer Society.

Edwin Robert Carpenter, 94, of Harrodsburg, widower of Mabel Gray and Eva Cheatham died Friday, July 9, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville. Edwin was born on January 5, 1916 and was the son of the late Bennie Robert and Lizzie Gibson Carpenter. He was a retired mechanic, a member of the Beech Grove Baptist Church in Danville and enjoyed being around people and he loved his family.

Edwin is survived by one son: Bobby (Brenda) Carpenter of Harrodsburg, one step-son: Hobert (Marilyn) Cheatham of Harrodsburg, two daughters: Jean Reynolds of Perryville and Connie (George) Gibson of Harrodsburg, five grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three step- great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by a son: Jimmy Carpenter, a daughter: Barbara Carpenter Strevels, one grandson: Terry Reynolds and one brother: Hubert Carpenter.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Lewis Walters and John David Lane officiating. Burial will be in the Hill Crest Cemetery in Perryville with Brent Gibson, Chris Reynolds, Brian Carpenter, Travis Gray, Garland Frederick, Kent Reynolds, Cory Carpenter, Jacob Gibson, Greg Pelfrey, Ronnie Patton and Kenny Hensley serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Monday, July 12, 2010 and after 7:00 A.M. Tuesday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Mrs. Georgia Margaret Webb, 89, wife of Orland Webb of Harrodsburg died Thursday, July 8, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville. Born March 25, 1921 in Mercer County, Georgia was the daughter of the late George and Emma Ball Sexton. Georgia was a homemaker and a member of the Shawnee Run Baptist Church. She enjoyed quilting, cooking and making rugs.

In addition to her husband Georgia is survived by two sons: Donald Webb and Robert (Jennifer) Webb both of Mercer County, two sisters Martha Bennett of Burgin and Jo Ann Dexter of Danville, three grandchildren: Kasey Webb, Kristi Webb and Dana Adams. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M., Monday, July 12, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Lester Tirey and Odis Clark officiating. Burial will be in the Shawnee Run Baptist Church Cemetery with Bill Minton, Chuck Adams, Kasey Webb, Bob Carpenter, Jerry Royalty, Harold Moore, Clifford Houp, and Don Ellis serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Slaven, Barry Sexton, Donnie Cocanougher, James Reed, Gene Motley, Juan Vasquez and Tony Warner.

Visitation will be 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Sunday, July 11, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Lorraine Cannon Kurtz, 88, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2010 at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maxwell Kurtz, in 1988 and an infant daughter Connie Gale Kurtz in 1941.

Lorraine was born December 24, 1921 in Mercer County to the late Ernest F. and Bertie Leonard Cannon. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Violet Meredith, Martina Nooe, Hazel Arnold, and Geneva Stakelin and her brothers Richard, Charles, Andrew, Leo, and Forrest Cannon.

She was a member of the Indian Rocks Baptist Church in Indian Rocks, Florida where she and her husband had lived in retirement from 1972 to 1988. Lorraine worked in retail most of her adult life. She was a resident and employee of Sayre Christian Village, Lexington, Kentucky from 1995 to 2005. For the past three years she lived at Pine Meadows Health Care, Lexington, Kentucky. Lorraine was the embodiment of unconditional love for her family and friends and will be sorely missed by all.

Survivors include sons Forrest Larry Kurtz of Birmingham, AL., and Gerald Maxwell (Sheilah) Kurtz of Georgetown, Kentucky, one grandson Christopher Kurtz and two granddaughters Rhonda Kurtz Hamilton and Vivien Catrina Kurtz and two great granddaughters, Kalie and Brittney Hamilton also survive her. Ten sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law as well as numerous nephews and nieces also survive her.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 9, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Mark Kurtz officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Thursday and after 7:00 a.m. Friday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Cox, Charlotte Jean

Charlotte Jean Cox, 63, wife of Bobby Gene Cox, died Saturday, July 3, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville. Born August 26, 1946 in Nelson County, she was the daughter of the late Oakley Roy and Virginia Whitehouse Lewis. She was a former employee of the Legend of Daniel Boone and Shakertown, and was also a Homemaker. She was a Baptist, loved her flowers, crafts, and was a member of the Kountry Krafters.

Other than her husband, survivors include one son Roy Lee Cox of Harrodsburg and one daughter Tammy Marie (Jay) Miller of Salvisa. One brother Roy Clifford (Cathy) Lewis of Ingram, TX., and two sisters Brenda Shuman of Harrodsburg and Debbie (James) Rose of Taylorsville. Five grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 8, at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. James Byrd officiating. Burial will be in the Cox Family Cemetery with Christopher Cox, Roy Lee Cox, Jr., Gary Dale Cox, James Thompson, Jordan Casey, Cory Casey, Anthony Durham, and Justin Durham serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be William Riley, Anthony Bast, and Adam Elliott.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and after 7:00 a.m. Thursday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Bobby Seay Sallee, 70, died Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington. Born August 19, 1939 in Cornishville, he was the son of the late William Russell and Lillie Fields Sallee. He was a retired UPS Mechanic and Driver, and also retired from the United States Air Force; having also served in the U.S. Army, Army Guard, and Air Guard. Bobby enjoyed making and selling jewelry and also collecting coins and stamps.

Survivors include four sons: Timothy Seay (Laura) Sallee of Mercer County, Edward Russell (Carmen) Sallee of Bowling Green, Bradley Jay (Tina) Sallee of Harrodsburg, and Brandon Scott (Leia) Sallee of Harrodsburg. Three daughters: Donna Darlene Butler of Lakeland, FL., Mary Carlene (Ray) Gill of Kelseyville, CA., and Brenda Kay (Greg) Chadwell of Danville. Two brothers Michael Troy Sallee of Floyds Knobs, IN. and William Russell Sallee, Jr. of Burgin. One sister Pauline Richmond of Mercer County, sixteen grandchildren, five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by one sister Jessie Louise Travilian.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 4, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Andy Turner and Bro. Kenny Queener officiating. Burial with military Honors will be in Cornishville Baptist Church Cemetery with Timothy Sallee, Edward Sallee, Bradley Sallee, Brandon Sallee, Greg Chadwell, and Jesse Chadwell serving as active pallbearers. Michael Troy Sallee, William Russell, Jr., and Bobby’s grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday and after 8:00 a.m. Sunday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Thomson-Hood Veterans Center Trust Fund, 100 Veterans Drive, Wilmore, KY 40390.

Gladys Clark, 83, of Harrodsburg, widow of Arlie Clark died Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born August 25, 1926, Gladys was the daughter of the late Arthur and Arlie McKinney Houp. Gladys was a homemaker, a Baptist and enjoyed playing bingo and making crafts.

She is survived by four sons: Ronald (Margaret) Clark of Versailles, Donald Clark of Lexington, Johnny Clark of Frankfort and William (Mona) Clark of Georgetown, four daughters: Sherry Utter of Georgetown, Mary Evelyn (James) Corbin of Indiana, Linda Goforth and Wanda (Bill) Benedict both of Nicholasville, two sisters: Peggy Hogue of Mt. Washington, Laura Bell Tillett of Nicholasville, two brothers Gilbert Ray (Linda) Horton of Salvisa and Ben (Billie) Horton of Nicholasville, a great aunt: Hester Haslett of Burgin, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a very special friend: Bea Beasley.

In addition to her parents Gladys was preceded in death by two sisters: Nancy Mason and Polly Waldrop and two brothers: Melvin Horton and Hansford Horton.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M., Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with James Humphrey officiating. Burial will be in the Shawnee Run Baptist Church Cemetery with Kenny Waldrop, Josh Clark, Pat Clark, William Clark, Bill Benedict, and Jacky Waldrop serving as pallbearers.

Clyde Edward Tate, 68, husband of Karen Stumph Tate, died Monday, June 28, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. Born December 5, 1941 in Mitchellsburg, he was the son of the late James Thomas and Georgia Beatrice Burchett Tate. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietname War, a former forklift and backhoe operator, and a member of the Crossroads Christian Church. He enjoyed restoring his 1973 El Camino.

Survivors other than his wife include two sons: Troy (Tina) Tate of Danville and Christopher Tate of Danville. Two stepsons Anthony Byrd of Harrodsburg and Randy Byrd of Washington County. One daughter Amy Tate of Danville and one step-daughter Sharon (Delbert) Hafley of Harrodsburg. Two brothers William (Lisa) Tate of Indiana and Billy Joe (Ann) Tate of Eubank; seven sisters: Martha (Jim) Shupping of Indiana, Wilma (Danny) Miller of Indiana, Roberta (Billy) Preston of Danville, Brenda (Mike) McCauley of Indiana, Sue Ella (Charles) Larson of Indiana, Marcella (Ed) Bateman of Indiana, and Helen Ward of Danville. Eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by one son Clyde Edward Tate, Jr., one daughter Michelle Tate, one brother James Robert Tate, and one sister Georgia Lynn Tate.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 1, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Curtis Sims and Chris Bowen officiating. Burial with military Honors will be at Camp Nelson National Cemetery with Randy Byrd, Anthony Byrd, Delbert Hafley, Johnny Burchett, Donnie Stumph, and Troy Tate serving as active pallbearers. Joe Byrd and David Estes will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of service Thursday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Willie Kenneth Smith, Sr., 83, of Danville, widower of the late Joann Stephens Smith, died Sunday, June 27, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. Born December 13, 1926 in Dugansville, he was the son of the late Claude and Emma Viola Durr Smith. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, he was retired from Wilkinson Farms after twenty seven years, was a member of the Shakertown Baptist Church, enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, working on old cars, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include five sons: Willie Kenneth (Jaime) Smith, Jr., of Junction City, Richard (Donna) Smith of Virginia, Charles Nelson Smith of Danville, and Tony Smith also of Danville, and Frank Smith of Michigan. Three daughters: Sandra Smith of Danville, Norma Davis Smith of Lancaster, and Denise (Marshall) Wilcher of Hustonville. One sister Elsie Driskell of Salvisa, and sixteen grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by one daughter Tammy Morgan and one son Billy Smith.

Funeral services will be conducted 12:00 noon Friday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Lynn Releford officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hebron Methodist Church Cemetery with Bradley Quinn, Thomas Quinn, James Quinn, Chris Releford, Jamie Releford, and Lynn Releford serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Harold Driskell, Mike Driskell, Wayne Savage, Gayle Savage, Thomas Savage, Jr., Jim Smith, Rickey Releford, Bill Quinn, and Steve Releford.

Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday and after 7:00 a.m. Friday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.
