Robert Hehman, UC biology prof
Robert Hehman, a biologist and aviation buff who overcame tremendous odds to carve out a successful life, died today at Christ Hospital. He was 58.
A biology professor at the University of Cincinnati for 25 years before his retirement, Mr. Hehman, while a Xavier University student in 1961, broke his neck in a diving accident. He was paralyzed from the shoulders down and spent the rest of his life in a wheel chair.
But this didn't stop him, said his brother, Norb Hehman. He went on to get his bachelor's degree in biology from Xavier and a master's degree from UC.
"His career goal was to be a physician, but due to his injury and some of the resultant physical limitations, he turned to biology," Norb Hehman said. "And he ended up teaching innumerable local physicians and nurses and medical people over the years."
He also wrote several textbooks on biology. In 1990, Mr. Hehman received the Dolly Cohen Award, which is given to the top professor at UC as voted by the students and faculty.
"He had an indomitable spirit," his brother said. "He was an incredible inspiration to anybody who had any contact with him. He always gave more than he took."
Mr. Hehman was a lifelong resident of Fort Thomas, Kentucky He was an enthusiastic XU basketball fan and rarely missed their games. He was fascinated by airplanes and over the years became an authority on them.
Other survivors: a brother, Dr. Kenneth Hehman of Cincinnati; a sister, Joan Janszen of Highland Heights, Kentucky, and his lifelong friend, Gayle Eggleston of Lakeside Park.

Alexis Callen, 5, spread delight
Denny Callen says some may doubt it, but he saw something of a miracle at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati Wednesday night. It happened just before his 5-year-old granddaughter, Alexis M. Callen of Dry Ridge, died, and he says it was a clear sign that little "Lexi" was going to a better place.
"They took her, and put her in her mother's arms," recounted Mr. Callen. "And for four days she had really just been sleeping, with no emotion on her face. But when they laid her in her mom's arms, that kid went from just a plain look, to a look of 'My mommy's got me in her arms, and I'm happy and content and just let me go.' You would have had to see it. It would just blow your mind. It was an experience I'll cherish the rest of my life."
Alexis' effect on those around her was often described as somewhat miraculous as well. Her grandfather said before she became sick with leukemia a year ago, she was a typical preschooler. She loved Barney and baby dolls and giggling.
But, he said, she always had a special gift for spreading happiness through her contagious smile and generous nature.
"She always had a smile on her face and before she got done with you, she would give it to you," said her grandfather. "The five years of joy we got from her will last forever."
Survivors include her parents, Steven and Suzette Callen of Dry Ridge; a brother, Steve Callen, at home; grandparents, Denny and Chris Callen of Elsmere and Wayne and Jeanette Gullett of Cordova; and a great-grandmother, Henchall Blackaby of Florence.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Barbara Church, Independence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to the family.

Sarah A. Cole Baker , 56, of Cold Spring, died Thursday at her residence. She was a tax examiner for the IRS in Covington. She was a member of Summit Church of Christ in Cold Spring.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Baker of Cold Spring; a daughter, Renee Herald of Cold Spring; sisters, Ruth Reynolds of Cold Spring and Wilma Cole of Jackson; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Watts Funeral Home, Jackson. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Buck Herald Cemetery, Breathitt County. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling local arrangements.

John Roy Field , 80, of Seminole, Fla., formerly of Alexandria, died at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Arbors of St. Petersburg in St. Petersburg, Fla. He was a retired air-conditioning technician at Rusk Heating & Air Conditioning, Covington. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Anne Field of Seminole; sons, Ron Field of New Market, Ala., and Roy Field of Dettford, N.J.; a brother, Adrian Veldhuisen of Amsterdam, Holland; sisters, Ali Veldhuisen and Sis Geuzebrock, both of Amsterdam, Holland; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Alexandria Funeral Home, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Taylor Mill.

Frank R. Hartley Sr. , 72, of Independence, died at 9:55 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired driver with Hertz Rental Car Agency and Walnut Street Garage in Cincinnati.
He also was a member of Taylor Mill Church of Christ, Covington Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 1469 and Teamsters Union Local No. 1000, Cincinnati. He was a le gionnaire with the Moose Lodge Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Hartley of Independence; and a son, Frank R. Hartley of Independence.

William Hump Hill Sr. , 90, of Bellevue, died Thursday at his home. He was a carpenter with Wolter Construction Co. and a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Dayton.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Hill; daughters, Joyce Downs and Beverly Markwell, both of Dayton, Linda Dragan of Cincinnati and Kay Harris of Bellevue; a son, Bill Hill Jr. of Dayton; 22 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Ora Lee Humphrey , 92, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at her home.
She was a cafeteria worker with Lloyd High School.
Survivors include a daughter, Chyrl Duffman of Erlanger; a sister, Minnie Mae Stephenson of Lawrence, Kan.; and two grandsons.

Brandon Thomas Lay , 4 months, of Florence, died Wednesday at Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati.
Survivors include his parents, Fred and Sharon Wright Lay of Florence; brothers, Chad Lay and Austin Lay, both at home; and grandparents, Jack Wright of Covington, Brenda and Ralph Shinkle of Covington, and Mary Lay of Covington.

Mary Ella "Ellie" McCarty , 46, of Maysville, died at 10:08 a.m. Tuesday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. She was a homemaker.

James E. Murray Sr. , 76, of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was a physical plant supervisor with Northern Kentucky University, and a member of Henry Barnes Masonic Lodge in Day ton, the Scottish Rite in Covington and Highland Hills Baptist Church, Fort Thomas.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Murray; daughters, Rose Carter and Jamie Murray, both of Cincinnati, Jeannine Setser of Lithonia, Ga., Carla Farrar of Falmouth and Jane Horstman of Fort Thomas; a son, James E. Eleanor Tape Schneider , 93, of Newport, died at 3:15 a.m. Thursday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Maurice Schneider, died in 1991. A son, Robert Schneider, died in 1967.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Scharstein of Southgate; sons, Donald Schneider and Paul Schneider; 22 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

James Howard Springer , 79, of Maysville, died at 8:55 a.m. Wednesday at Veterans Medical Center, Lexington. He was a plant supervisor with Clover Leaf Dairy in Maysville, a member of Maysville Masonic Lodge No. 52 and a security guard with DP&L J.M. Stewart Plant in Aberdeen, Ohio. He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Maysville, and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. His wife, Margaret Springer, died on May 12.
Survivors include a daughter, Diana Bentley of Maysville; a son, Rodney Springer of Kettering, Ohio; a sister, Mae Ward of Flemingsburg; and three grandchildren.

Bill Young , 70, of Falmouth, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a carpenter and a member of Butler Baptist Church. A son, Roy Young, died in 1969. Daughters, Ruth Young Tucker and Rita J. Young, died in 1968 and 1995, respectively.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Owens Young; a son, Bob Young of Butler; a daughter, Betty Young Praether of Cynthiana; a brother, Bud Young of Sandusky, Ohio; a sister, Rosie Young of Hazard; and seven grandchildren.
