Robert A. Ruschell, played major role in Villa Hills

Robert A. Ruschell played such a significant role in the development of Villa Hills that the City Council honored him with a special day.

Mr. Ruschell, 75, who served on city council for 17 years and on the city's Board of Adjustment for 24 years, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.

He was involved in projects such as building the Tom Braun sports fields and the Villa Hills City Building.

Last year, to honor Mr. Ruschell, Villa Hills City Council declared Oct. 23 Robert Ruschell Day.

"He was easy to work with. He got along with everybody," recalled former city councilman and mayor Bud Cunningham. "He was a salesman, and he put the old salesman pitch on them and they'd come right around.

"He was in cahoots with me when we built the city building. We built the city building by minimizing spending and went out and bought a city building for cash," Mr. Cunningham said.

The building cost $180,000 in the early 1980s.

Although he was known throughout the community for his civic mindedness, Mr. Ruschell also was devoted to his family, said a son, Peter Ruschell of Batavia, Ohio.

"He always put his family first. Both he and our mother made a lot of sacrifices for the family," the younger Mr. Ruschell said.

By trade, Mr. Ruschell was an account executive with Ruben H. Donnelly Yellow Pages.

"He was a magnificent speaker," said his son. "He used to train salesmen - hundreds of them at a time.

Mr. Ruschell also was an Army veteran.

His wife, Sue A. Ruschell, died in 1997.

In addition to his son Peter, survivors include daughters, Rebecca Kennedy and Cindy Weisberger, both of Villa Hills, Susan Pederson of Independence, Polly Reeves of Loveland, Ohio, Sandy Geisen of Edgewood and Mary Beth Hall of Taylor Mill; another son, Robert Ruschell of Independence; sisters, Helen Willard of Fort Thomas and Nancy Yeager of Alexandria; brothers, George Ruschell of Lexington and Samuel Ruschell of Cold Spring; and 15 grandchildren.
