Thomas George Lohre, owned advertising, import businesses

Thomas George Lohre was an adventurer and business owner who once used an elephant to make a point for a business venture.

"He could really set the stage," said his son, Charles Lohre of Cincinnati.

Yet, when it came to his children, he was careful not to let them wander off or go astray during their many travels.

"I have to credit him for keeping us all safe and sound. With eight kids, it wasn't easy," said Charle Lohre.

Mr. Lohre, 75, of Big Pine Key, Fla., formerly of Park Hills, died at 7:10 a.m. Nov. 23 at Fisherman's Hospital in Marathon Key, Fla. He was founder of the Lohre and Associates advertising firm and an entrepreneur.

He began his advertising career at Strauchen and McKim Advertising Co., working on campaigns for Fifth Third Bank and the Hudepohl Brewing Co. He bought the firm in 1968 and changed the name to Lohre and Associates.

He lived for a time on his 54-foot yacht, the Kingfish, at the Four Seasons Yacht Club before he and his daughter piloted the vessel to Marathon, Fla., in 1984. He bought a motel there, refurbished it and sold it.

On his many travels to Central America searching for business opportunities, he started DeLohre Imports, which brought Belize carvings, Honduran amber and Guatemalan pottery to the States.

He later started DeLohre Shark Leather Goods and brought it to success selling items on the Internet and throughout the Florida Keys.

His wife, Peggy G. Higgins Lohre, died in 1981.

Mr. Lohre served in the Army Air Corps in 1945.

Other survivors include sons, Charles R. Lohre and Randal R. Lohre, both of Cincinnati, and Stephen J. Lohre of Park Hills; daughters, Dr. M. Susan Lohre of St. Louis, Patricia L. Chewning of Oxford, Ohio, Cynthia G. List of Elsmere and Mary M. Lohre of Park Hills; brothers, James Lohre of Garland, Texas, and Robert Lohre of Pass Christian, Miss.; and seven grandchildren.
