Bobby Farmer, police chief even criminals respected

Bobby Farmer was the cop that everybody knew and trusted in the small town of Fairview.

As a police officer and chief of police for 18 years, Mr. Farmer must have issued traffic tickets to almost everyone in Fairview - including the mayor, said one of Mr. Farmer's sons, James L. Farmer of Fairfield, Ohio.

Still, Mr. Farmer was so well-liked and respected that when other police departments had warrants for potentially dangerous people, they would ask him to go pick the suspect up.

Mr. Farmer let the suspects finish their coffee before he took them to jail and let them ride in the front seat with him, his son said.

"Everybody liked him because he was fair. He wouldn't handcuff people. They'd say 'I'll let you pick me up, but I won't let those other people arrest me,' " Farmer said.

"And that's just the way Dad was."

Mr. Farmer, 71, of Covington, died at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.

Mr. Farmer was also a Kenton County Knothole baseball coach and surrogate father to the players for 20 years, his son said.

"He's got 'kids' scattered all over Northern Kentucky," Farmer said. Mr. Farmer started out coaching while his two sons played in the league but didn't want to stop when they got too old for it.

"He just loved the kids," Farmer said.

Mr. Farmer also loved to work and spent time in several different industries, including trucking, Farmer said. At 68, when he finally retired, he was a machine operator at ADVO Inc., an advertising mailing company in Florence.

"He didn't want to stop working," his son said.

Other survivors include a son, Michael Farmer of Lacie; a daughter, Linda Egan of Covington; brothers, Jack Farmer, J.C. Farmer and W.D. Farmer, all of Crab Orchard; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His wife, Nancy Farmer, died in 1992.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the Funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
