Hilda Dills Hutcherson, mother, provider, caregiver

Hilda Dills Hutcherson's daughter said her mother lived by these words:

"If you do your part, the Lord will do his."

Mrs. Hutcherson did her part, rearing a family and holding a succession of jobs outside the home. Although she officially retired at the age of 65, she continued to work. The 86-year-old woman baby-sat in her home up until May 1998.

Mrs. Hutcherson died Wednesday morning at her home in Williamstown.

A lifelong resident of Grant County, Mrs. Hutcherson was well-respected in her community, said her daughter, Marilyn Howard of Williamstown.

"If she liked you, she would do anything in the world for you," said Mrs. Howard.

She'd lived 61 years in the two-story white frame house she built with her husband, Emerson Hutcherson, and her father-in-law, Marion Hutcherson.

After her husband died in 1944, Mrs. Hutcherson worked as a cashier at the Kroger grocery store and the Kentucky Food Store, both in Williamstown.

She was working at Levi Strauss & Co. in Florence when she retired but soon took the job of custodian at Williamstown Christian Church, where she was a member and taught Sunday school.

Mrs. Hutcherson quit for a time to care for her elderly mother, then began babysitting in her home.

Despite her busy schedule, Mrs. Hutcherson found time for hobbies. She loved to work in her vegetable garden, raising tomatoes and green beans, Mrs. Howard said.

She was an animal-lover and owned a succession of poodles. When she died, Mrs. Hutcherson had two cats and a silver toy poodle named Gracie she inherited when a neighbor died. It was a love match.

"Gracie turned out to be the best poodle she ever had," said her daughter. "It meant so much to her. It was in her bed with her when she died."

Other survivors include a son, Marion L. Hutcherson of Amelia, Ohio; a brother, George S. Dills of Covington; a sister, Helen McClain of Corinth; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home in Williamstown, with visitation from 11 a.m.
