Gary Thomas Carter, 48, of Warsaw, died Thursday at his home. He was a former supervisor for A.O. Smith Co., Cincinnati, and an Army veteran. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, Bedford.

Mildred E. "Mil" Cochran, 92, of Southgate, died Wednesday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home. She was a homemaker and a member of Southgate Super Seniors, Wilder Seniors, St. Therese Alter Society and St. Ann Ladies Auxiliary at Corpus Christi Church. Her husband, Lee Cochran, died in 1971. James E. Gilbert Sr., 59, of Latonia, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington. He was a retired maintenance worker for Covington Independent School system and a member of Moose Lodge No. 1469, Covington.

Eugene Thompson "Gene" Hughes, 85, of Mount Olivet, died Friday at Robertson County Health Care Facility, Mount Olivet. He was a retired superintendent for Blue Licks Battlefield State Park, Robertson County, and a former Mount Olivet policeman, Robertson County sheriff, Mount Olivet mayor, and former owner and operator of Gene's TV and Appliance, Mount Olivet. He was a member of Fosters Chapel United Methodist Church and Blue Licks Masonic Lodge F&AM.

Hillman "Dutch" Hutchinson, 75, of Taylor Mill, died at 11:47 a.m. Friday at his home. A retired carman for the L&N Railroad, he was a Merchant Marine during World War II. He was a member of Eggleston United Methodist Church, Erlanger, and Bradford Lodge No. 123 F&AM, Independence.

Her husband, Melvin Earl Kelly, died in 1978. Margaret "Maggie" Marksberry, 85, of Butler, died Friday at Lakeside Health Care Center in Highland Heights. Her husband, Tom Marksberry, died in 1991.

Robert B. McVey Jr., 69, of Independence, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was a retired welder for Stacy's Manufacturing in Elmwood, Ohio, an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Wilmington Masonic Lodge.
His wife, Evelyn Bowman McVey, died in 1967. Survivors include sons, Jim R. McVey of Florence and Michael D. McVey of Covington; a sister, Kitty Sue Rickerson of Troy, Ohio; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Richard Alan Yocum, 32, of Dallas, Ga., formerly of Union, died Thursday at his home. He was a mechanical engineer and a member of Olive Springs Baptist Church, Marietta, Ga.

Teacher Linda Graves joined civic groups
Sixty-five years ago, when Linda M. Graves was a newlywed, women were not allowed to have it all - at least if they were teachers.
So when Mrs. Graves said "I do," she also had to start saying, "I don't teach anymore."
"She was an elementary level teacher in the Dayton schools in the early 1930s," said her son, Dr. Thomas Graves of Wooster, Ohio. "But when they married in 1935, she had to stop because if a woman was married they could not teach then."
Dr. Graves said he never understood the rationale behind that dictate, but he clearly benefited from having both mother and teacher at home for a while as he grew up.
Mrs. Graves, 90, of Fort Thomas, died Monday at Highland of Fort Thomas Nursing Home.
Mrs. Graves got the chance to return to teaching as a married woman when World War II left a short supply of qualified instructors on the home front.
The situation was especially critical in Northern Kentucky schools, according to Dr. Graves.
"During the war, around 1942, she taught at Fourth Street Elementary in Newport for about three or four years," said Dr. Graves.
"She told me many men teachers were taken out, and they offered more money to teachers in Cincinnati. So many Northern Kentucky teachers went over there, and they had to bring the married women in here."
Mrs. Graves taught in Newport until the late 1940s, then returned home to raise her son full time.
She remained active in school through parent-teacher organizations. She also was active in numerous organizations including St. Luke's Ladies Auxiliary, Holly Hill Children's Home Gui ld and the Lucy Abert Literary Club.
Mrs. Graves was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Newport.
Survivors, in addition to her son, include her husband of 65 years, Mentor Graves; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Delbert H. Buckler, 79, of Connersville, Ind., formerly of Hebron, died at 1:20 a.m. Monday at Lincoln Centers East, Connersville.
He was the retired owner of a Standard Oil station in Hebron, a member of the National Rifle Association and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Gill Buckler; a son, Lynn Buckler of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Carol Wade of Connersville; and one granddaughter.

She was a homemaker and a member of Mussel Shoals Baptist Church, Owen County. Her husband, Walter "Podge" Cook, died in 1975. A daughter, Evelyn Jean Cook, also preceded her in death.
